  • I think we also have to remember, the point of this add is to change motorcyclist behaviour. If it doesn't achieve this, then it has failed. As a rider I find this add quite annoying and get into "defence mode" from watching it. I'm sure a lot of other riders feel the same from reading the comments, and so this add is unlikely to change our behaviour, and therefore it has failed to do what it was meant to do. I.E. Shit add

  • @Damian2257 And that is the point which we tried to communicate to the TAC. I don't think that any riders took much notice of the content of this ad, and that fact seems to have been born out in the overall bike toll here in Victoria since that ad went to air. We are now 20 up on last year. That tells us something - that TAC just don't get it - Yet. I think they are trying to, and are certainly starting to listen to what we are telling them.

  • i disagree with the lanesplitting comment. if done in right settings it is safer.

  • @eoyourmom Certainly agree there. Lanesplitting can be absolutely safe, if one understands what they are doing. Training in the application of this "skill" is what is required - not just telling riders that they must not do it. Riders do it every day - everywhere and there are very few accidents that can be aligned to the practice. Trained riders do it - and don't have accidents IMHO.

  • It does make us look like demented morons on a death wish - unlike 99.9% of the riders I have ever seen..Nevertheless, it is up to us to reduce our risks - but not our fun on 2 wheels. What we must ensure TAC and all the other sheltered workshops that extract money from us for the privilege of riding is how to get the same empathy that the treadlies do - but pay nothing to use the same roads! I was riding North of Sydney last Sunday, PAID $11 to use a National Park - they were free...TO RACE!!

  • Stupid and insulting.

  • Complete load of shit, HOWEVER, riding in Melbourne does scare the shit out of me with the fast, gridded road system. Sydney is much better and no-one gives a fuck about the Gold Coast anyway.

  • The only good thing of this ad is the engine sound

  • I recommend you "rate" this Vid by clicking on the stars above. I gave it a ONE - ie poor, - or else some Politician is going to stand up in 3 months and say 'wow, what a success, we got a 90% approval rating" based on 4/5 stars. Cheers

  • You f'n idiots TAC. How dare you paint motorcyclists in this light. Sure a few riders do stupid stuff like this add but 90% do not. You make all bike riders out to be hoons.

Picture a P plater with big exhaust you can fit your head into and lowered suspension on some $hitbox. Not all drivers are like that right. Well you successfully painted ALL bike riders in a similar light

    Screw you Victoria

  • The shouldn't call them accidents. An accident is something like the lights all turning green. Or a cup handle breaking and spilling coffeee down your front.

They should be called "STUPIDS" because they are caused by people being stupid. They are crashes.

The add might say that it's 38% higher chance of death, but bikers are more aware of their surroundings, and in my city at least, there are less bike accidents because the bikers treat the car drivers as ignorant blind morons.

  • Hey TAC your not given taxpayers money to scaremonger. I well sick of the attitude towards motorcyclists. Ill bet the government down the make a motza out of Moto GP and Superbikes. Premier events promoted by the government. Hey TAC heads up here NONE OF US WANT TO DIE. Spend the our money improving our safety. How about a minimum standard for riding equipment, on going rider training, refresher courses for returning riders, AND A MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS COMPONENT IN THE CAR LICENCING TEST. I

  • What a complete load of shit, typical scare tactics. How about a video where blind & ignorant car drivers rear end bike riders who don't lane split or how about these morons that are too important to look left or right before crushing me into another car or road barricade. Fuck off TAC, thank christ I don't live in Vic.

  • That is so sad that I as a completely safe and entirely lawful, even when I completely disagree with certain road rules, am considered as per this ad a hoon who will get what I clearly deserve eventually cos I'm a bike rider.

  • I`ve been a sportsbike rider for many years and I thought it was EXCELLENT. There`s at least one poor sod getting scraped off the Gold Coast roads every weekend, usually in a single bike accident, so constantly blaming car drivers is just bullshit. I wish they would show it on the TV up here. If it only saves one life it will be worth the money.

  • U hav got 2 b Kidding, the whole point of this ADD is that it paints riders, as IDIOTS,LANE SPLITTING FREAKS, SPEED DEMONS,ETC:The public knows no difference,Overtake a car and get thrown from the bike,[FUCK OFF]You are only SUPPORTING your own DEMISE.

H-D FXDL and Suzuki B-KIng OWNER.PERSECUTE ME NO MORE,You,A Sportsbike rider,I`m going to be sick. What, do you ride it like a MOPED,I take it with these comments you have never broke the law.EVER.

  • The only thing good about this is the ER6n!

  • What an absolute croc of shit... You've gotta be fuckin kidding me... It looks like we're all a bunch of law breakers out to kill ourselves.

  • If that's what it looks like to you - then just think what it means to all the cars drivers out there. Certainly re-enforces the public stereotype.

  • All of which made me think, how are we actually measuring the effectiveness of the TAC ads, the cost of which is incredible (high millions) compared to other states.

It seems like the "independent" research by MUARC is just geared towards justifying what has been done, taking a correlation between advertising to indicate cause, using whatever figures are at hand (e.g. lumping figures for dirtbike riders in with road riders).

Too little credible statistical analysis, too much back-patting.

  • From what was said last night at the Motorcycle Forum, with a no-doubt embarrassed TAC rep present -

The TAC made the ad with no consultation with, nor endorsement from, stakeholders in the government or riding groups, and in doing so embarrassed themselves and their management. (yep he actually said embarrassed)

It sounded like those responsible have been reprimanded, the ad was going to be pulled, and there will be an effort to stop this happening again in the future.

  • I think the whole TAC campaign is rubbish, this latest ad re-enforcing my view.

It make's the non riding public think we are all complet nutters with no respect for anyone else on the road.

Nice waste of time and money TAC, what a balls up.

  • as a fellow motorcycle rider i found this ad great... it really hits home with all the dangours

  • I think you're all missing the point. The point of the ad is to show how as you you make risky decisions the risk ads up. Eventually, whomever fault it is, a combination of too much risk and a bad situation you could wind up seriously injured or dead.

I went for a month without speeding, without lane splitting. Had almost a 10th the incidents where I avoided "stupid cagers". I now ride aggressively again and there are a lot more incidents that I encounter that push my luck.

  • JacktheSmack id dead on read his comment that's the point

  • Jack - we are not missing the point. This ad isn't aimed at you the rider. Its aimed at your mum and the rest of your non-riding family. Its full of technically incorrect depictions. So you still ride aggressively - and are still alive - that tells me that you are a well educated rider. We are not complaining about the message - we are complaining about the way it is being communicated - which is by depicting motorcycle riders as law breaking manic hoons.... which I am certain you are not!?

  • I saw it as another reinforcement that demonstrates quite clearly how risk is an accumulative factor that involves chance. The ad even clearly says that it doesn't matter who's fault it is, but that the rider is always on the loosing end.

I'm sure some scenes could have been done better, but overall it did really well in realistically portraying MY daily riding, which is who it's targeted to: aggressive, young riders

  • He looks at his speedo and highsides... i won't be paying any attention mine in future!

  • Yes, one is left to ask why would someone look at their speedo during an overtaking manoeuvre. How dangerous is that? This is yet another critical error in this ad. Its just not the way we all ride and agin a bad depiction of we riders.

  • actually watching it again specifically at the Lane splitting part he's coming on to the van at about 80kph then all of a sudden the van indicates and pulls in front of the rider, so the rider has to make a quick desicion and he ends up going round, it's not that noticeable i had to watch it over since the other day to refresh myself

  • He approaches the van and is able to slow to about the same speed as the van. Pretty safe riding and demonstrating good anticipation by the rider. The rider probably predicted what the van driver was about to do well before he got to the van. That the rider was safely able to negotiate getting around the van shows just what a myth the lane splitting myth really is. The level of rider training and experience are the true risk factors - not the act of lane splitting.

  • Just noted another critical error in the ad - in the lane splitting comment. Bike comes up behind white van with left indicator flashing - bike slows and overtakes on the right. How can that be risky? The bike knew what the van was about to do - there was gallons of space on the right - so naturally the bike could go through there safely - and incidentally "legally" because the bike didt stayed in side the lane.

  • it's a bit risky because he was about to continue straight down then head's out into the far right where there's oncoming traffic, this one's a bit iffy but that's my view, Lane splitting although common is illegal i was browsing through my handbook the other day. As for the ad itself 05ninjazx6r it's suggesting reduce your risks it's not saying riders are hoons, because the moto GP is coming out riders are inclined to take more risks and there's be more riders around, reduce your own risks

  • Actually, lane splitting is not illegal in certain circumstances. It is ill defined and not well understood by most. Cars don't tend to move laterally as the progress in their lane. The faster they are moving - the less they are likely to veer off the centre of their lane. On a bike you don't need a lot of space because you have excellent peripheral vision. Rider training on how to lane split would reduce the risk. Its not lane splitting - it the lack of experience and training!

  • That's true i won't debate that at all!

  • Id say that realistically that ad. is not correct, as not even one p-plater commodore is shown doing a stupid maneouver that puts the rider in danger. Risk no.5 in the ad. should be "by not watching out for p-plater commodores, you are increasing the risk".

  • seeing as how motorcyclists don't need wake up calls maybe the TAC could give that part of their ad budget to charity.

  • Its not that motorcycle riders need wake up calls. Its just that this ad is not the way to do it. As a rider, I and many others just don't relate to its content. Why? Because a lot of the content is technically incorrect - as is the style of riding depicted, which isn't quite how riders actually do it. Add to that the almost impossible to do stunt in the last scene, which doesn't make sense, and you will quickly understand why the Ad has been a complete waste of money by the TAC.

  • It's not saying riders are all hoons, it's merely presenting the risks and suggesting if you don't cut out these risks you have more chance of hurting yourself, it shows the second rider lane splitting which presents a hazard to the rider himself, the 4th rider wearing incorrect clothing, as for the last rider he's behind a van making it almost impossible to see oncoming traffic from the left hand bend and he's speeding so by the time he's out it's to hard to swerve back in hence losing control

  • It's obvious you don't ride by that last sentence.

  • Actually in that last scene the road ahead is clear as the rider overtakes. He's not speeding. You can tell that they have digitally inserted and mixed stuff for this one. The car that hits him when he comes off (still can't work out what caused the bike to throw him - in a very flat corner..) isn't even in site in the opening shot. There is something approaching, but I would have had enough time to pass if it had been me in exactly the same location/conditions.

  • Take a look again, if you want to get technically correct you can't even see what speed he's doing, and on that model bike i'm telling you now the tacho's in the middle the spedo's on the left. The corner bends to the left, so if he's in the right hand lane looks down at the speedo looks up and see's a van towing a caravan you'd wanna move quick, he swerves but as he is SPEEDING he loses control from swerving to hard to the left

  • Sorry, the road is too straight for him to realistically lose control. Its very hard to say whether he is speeding or not - engine revs are not a true indicator of speed.... I'm looking at the from the point of view of one who covers 50,000 km per year on a bike - and its looks suss to me - they have use of lot of digital effects... We could go on forever debating it. They could have portrayed it more effectively another way - if they had taken qualified advice.

  • There actually isn't many digital effects apart from crossing the shot of the oncoming van and the rider falling at the end, plus they mix all the shots together making it look like one continuous shot rather than filming all different scenarios. they did alot of P.O.V shots too to show what it's like from the riders perspective

  • You can see the speedo in the shot anyway, and it really doen't look like he's speeding...... Dude do you even ride? Im sorry but theres no way in hell you could lose control on a mild bend like that at that speed, its not going to happen. Unrealistic add, and as usual the TAC just paints all motorcyclists with the hoon brush

  • Yes you can see the speedo but because of the riders arm shadow you can't see what speed the needle is over, Yes i do ride and think of the last shot this way, you look up at a bend (slight bend) don't see a car so you proceed out, look down at your speedo look and suddenly see a 4X4 towing a caravan, your natural instinct would be move, real quick, by pulling the bike back down left the bike would (Should) fishtail (assuming you're correcting) and then grip, rider probably highsiding the bike

  • Absolute rubbish. If you do indeed ride, you must not be very good at it.

A good rider would have seen the oncoming vehicle. If not, get more roadcraft training.

A good rider, if caught out as you suggest, would have completed their pass quickly and safely. If they can't, they need more training.

The rear of the bike may skid if the rider panicked and jammed on the rear brake hard, causing a crash.

A good rider would not touch either brake in that situation, and certainly not the rear.

  • Did i at all say that i would brake coming back in? ii said you would pull down hard left, now you most probably wouldn't majority of the time lose control of the bike but in some instances such as with riders who don't have much experience they could lose control, on that bend and with the riders position on the rear right side you do not see the car until the bike is out that is the facts, in real life you would have sen the car well before, the fact is on the ad the vehicles not present

  • Actually, the ad isn't aimed at riders at all. Its aimed at my mum - to scare her and confirm that riding is dangerous and must not be undertaken under any circumstances. I can't see one bit of this ad that actually reflects reality. Its not quite right in several scenes. Almost - but somewhat erroneous....

  • This advert is NOT typical of the majority of motorcyclists... not even close.

If the TAC are GENUINELY concerned and want to send a message to motorcyclists, then perhaps they should focus more on rider being more aware of the REAL dangers out there such as irresponsible, unpredictable and brain-dead drivers out there who are too busy tuning in their radios, using their mobile or chatting to passengers to be concentrating on the road ahead !

ALL riders are HOONS.. is the message here.

  • I can't see anything in this ad that I relate to. That off at the end doesn't make sense. It seems to be "let's put in a crash just to make the ad look good". How does someone come off on what is a simple overtaking manouvre on a clear sunny day when the rider could see all oncoming vehicles? Not a good ad by any means. may scare my mum - but as I know how to ride for the conditions - it told me nothing I didn't already know.

  • This portrays the worst / extreme motorcyclist behaviours and is clearly not directed at motorcyclist, but rather trying to scare those thinking about riding a motorbike.

TAC needs to give a positive message - is rider training, clothing, etc
