Good summation of the case, but it goes way too fast in some spots, and is hard to read in some spot as well.
One of the most disturbing things is how the media touted this case as a justification for affirmative action/diversity goals(or whatever they are calling it now), but they remain silent when their poster boy turned out to be incompetent. It is hypocrisy of the media who have an agenda and will print anything that favors it , but not print real stories that would oppose it.
Affirmative Action is unconstitutional and anti-American. As an ASIAN (almost as likely to be rejected from colleges than whites) I say abolish this policy and start admitting people based on CHARACTER, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILL. Not by skin color/religion/nationality/sex/etc.
This is a great post. I would like to link to it, but I would feel better about it if the poster would correct a grammatical error. At some point the text uses the word "who's" as a possessive. The correct word there is "whose."
It should be noted that Bakke was put into the University's program after the Supreme Court decision. Yet, there were still several applicants that had higher scores than he did, and should have gotten that spot instead of him!
this is too simplistic a take on the issue. segregation has too long a history to be fixed with--all of a sudden--equal rights to access. the situation needs to be leveled by providing better primary education to inner city children, whatever their color, and better social models for the underprivileged. to just say that affirmative action can be dangerous is to take a racist stand. it provides no solution for the evil done and still propagated against the disenfranchised. it is not helpful.
I agree wholeheartedly that we need to do more to provide higher quality education for inner city children. By ending the practice of affirmative action we can focus on the real source of inequality - unequal education.
I am saddened that you see racism in my assertion that affirmative action is dangerous. This is just one of the issues raised when the gov't becomes involved in deciding the winners and losers in life. We all have a stake in building an equitable society.
Note: whyalltheproblems Q is in reference to the fact that I posted this video as a response to Obama's comments on the Gates arrest.
-Race has clouded judgment in both cases.
I believe the antidote is to look at the facts apart from race, how would things look if the races were reversed. The diversity applicants would have never been accepted if their skin was white. Gates would still have been arrested if he was white.
Phenomenal commentary on a very upsetting trend. I am all for giving people a hand up. But only if they are deserving. Just because someone has a certain color skin does not make them deserving.
Whew. Thank goodness we don't have an affirmative action POTUS. Oh wait ....

This video has a strong message, inadequately presented.
Please review and revise for readability. You have plenty
of time to present your message, so please SLOW DOWN!
Thanks for posting, though.

Well, for starters, the text was nearly impossible to read in some places because there was not enough contrast.
