  • Awesome!!!! But that chicks clothes are way louder than those locos!!!!

  • I'm still waiting from somone with enough money and passion to restore one of the old UP Big Boys

  • Loco restoration: HARD, DIRTY and always HEAVY work - LOVE IT ! Good luck (and lots of funds!) for restoring your grand old ladies over there across the pond.

  • Wow, when you were here, did you have any idea that the steam program was going to end at the end of 1994? Now the 4501 is coming back.

  • when i was little there was this 1940 cartoon and this boy feel asleep and we had a dream about trains and they came alive but it was so scary for me cause i was 3

  • 4501 comes back in service at the end of this year since the TVR signed another contract with a steam program. 630 returns to steam in the Spring, 4501 should hopefully be back by this fall for her 100th, and 610 should be back in 2012 for her 60th.

  • wait at 0:40 is that 4501 or is frisco 1522 cause it looks like frisco i wouldnt know because numbers are not even there only a 5.

  • @IraDeathViper There are only two engines that are in this video. The Southern 4501 in green, and N&W 1218 stripped down.

  • @tcarr22239 i know that so at 0:40 is 4501 cause both engines in my cimment before both look like 4-8-2 mountains

  • @tcarr22239 sorry a 2-8-2 mikado 4501 souther not 4-8-2 southern 4501 not near me plus i just counted wrong in front bogeys of her so yeah ignore almost all of my other comment (notice i said almost :)

  • The other steam engine is the #630. that is the sister engine to their #610. The #630 has just finished renovation and boiler tests are to begin next week, mid November 2010.

  • @napa15c No... 610 and 630 Are Not Sisters. 610 is a USATC S160 class 2-8-0, and 630 is a Southern Railway KS-1 Class 2-8-0

  • @288jh You are partially correct. #610 is a USATC engine, but is not a pure S160. She has several features that the standard S160 does not, and #610 was classified as a S160A, or simply, Class A.

  • Southern 4501 is beautiful.

  • This was before some asshat cancelled it to buy a jet.

  • So here's the scoop! We were at East Chattanooga this past weekend and rode Missionary Ridge with 610. The guy who sold us tickets said that hopefully in 2011, NS will be adding more excursions, including 4501!! He also said the boiler survey went very well. When we got to the back shop, we saw 4501 outside the shop. No rails were attached to the wheels. Her cab was painted black, the boiler had some kind of reddish primer, and the front of the boiler was still off. Let's hope this comes true!

  • @FreeFallin1976 She has to have a Complete Over haul, An Entirely new firebox, The Wheels have to have new tires,And of course all the Boiler work as well.

  • The 1218 is on static display in Roanoke, VA right next to the 611. There are no plans to run it again. In fact, some of the critical parts have been lost. It is amazing to see in person.

  • guy is using a broom ..

to align that piece on the wheel

    right tool

    for the job ..

  • Magnificent machine. Very good movie. Bravo. 5*

  • I lived in Irondale,Al during the 70s and remember quite well "ole #4501,God how i love that engine, sure hope it returns someday so i can video tape it. :-)

  • I feel sorry for 1218.

  • The best thing about this video is the tool they're using to line up the holes in the rods for the pins. What do you suppose they use to sweep the floors?

  • Yes, The broom comes in handy for many jobs around the shop. Did you see the toothbrush on the floor? Thats what they use to clean the floor with!!!

  • I hope they Restore the N&W 611 J Class and the Gs4 4449 Daylight because they are my favorite Steam Engines!

  • 4449 HAS been restored for a long time

  • @trainlover479 i agree

  • @GranTurismo360 The GS-4 Daylight 4449 is already restored, restored in 1974

  • how do u start a steam loco ? by lighting a match and throwing it in the fire box and how do u turn off one??

  • well, basically you start a fire in the firebox and build up the Boiler pressure to operating pressure of close to operating pressure. During this process you would be giving the boiler water as needed. To "put it to bed" you would give it shots of water until the water level in the boiler is full and then you would essentially drop the fire.

  • If you ran out of fuel somewhere in the countryside you just need a hawk to chop some wood and a basket to fetch water.

    Amazing steam machines!!!!

  • if they can restor the nkp 587 why no the 1501

  • you know a day before you shot this video aladdin 2 the return of jafar was launched on video for walt disney home video

  • Why cant they restore 1218? After all it is a star off the Norfolk Southern Steam Program.

  • I believe after NS dumped the steam program, they sold off all their related equipment as well. Without the equipment, 1218 and 611 will see very little chance of being restored to operating condition in the near future. Also, 1218 was under a rebuild when NS canceled the steam program. It was given a cosmetic restoration, but unfortunately, because there is literally nothing in the boiler remaining, it would need extensive work to restore now.

  • like i sy the nkp 587 loves the 611. thats why they look soooo goood together doubleheading

  • i would say the same thing but a lot of her fire box and flues have been removed and sold so its pretty much impossible to restore her now

  • Good Video

  • It's pretty much heartbreaking to see 4501 there. I heard she's supposed to be getting restored at some point... but who knows.

  • 1218's story is even more heartbreaking. 4501 is being restored for operation for her 100th birthday....but poor 1218 was gutted and NS sold the parts to fix her. I doubt that we'll ever see her run again.

  • Do not be disheartened if all is not well with loco 1218. In Britain restoration groups have saved Barry scrap-yard write offs into first class locomotives, some of which run on the main lines with rail tours or run on preserved lines. Some have even built new almost replica locomotives. Look for Tornado on youtube Good luck with all your steam locomotives maybe I will get the chance to see a few of them oneday

  • My husbands Grand dad was the engineer of the 4501 in the 70s, I've got lots of still pics of her. But no viedo. About 2 years ago we went to the TVRM to see her I got a pic of my hubby sitting in the engineer seat where he saw his granddad sit many years ago.

  • That's so cool :D Can we see the pics? I lvoe 4501 soo much.

  • Hey YES NW 1218 will Never run again but just be happy for the steam locomotives we DO HAVE in survice and at least the 611 and 1218 are in good shape and under cover! Everyone needs to stop aguing about the 1218 and help the steamers that are still running! I go on Milwaukee Road 261 all the time and they need help running her! Money wise! She is going to be overhalled this winter starting in Oct of this year and is hoping to come out in June of next year if they can get the money to run!

  • It might... you never know, there has been roumor the railroad wants it back, they have all the parts and stuff, its jsut all in storage

  • It might... you never know, there has been roumor the railroad wants it back, they have all the parts and stuff, its jsut all in storage

  • Man, i tought truck parts were big! My respects to the mechanics

  • So what's the news about 4501? Will she run again? My family and I rode on 4501 back in October 1992 to Chattanooga, and it is one of the best memories I have. I surely hope it will run again.

  • She is being taken care of by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. TVRM has an ambition to get the 4501 running again as I read about in a article in Sept 07. issue of Trains Magazine. It takes money and man power to keep these beast a going. I never had the chance to ride behind the 4501 as of yet. I have seen her in operation here in Birmingham, Alabama several times on excursions. It would be nice if and when TVRM can get her running again.

  • @FreeFallin1976 great news norfolk and southern is planning to start up the steam program again as early as the end of this year. they are trying to have the 4501 up sometime in 2011. go to nscorp.com for more details

  • @FreeFallin1976 News for you if you didn't know!!! Your comment was posted two years ago, but as of 2010 4501 is getting massive work down on it and will hopefully be pulling excursions by 2011 in Chattanooga area for now! Hopefully they will extend their excursions to other parts of N&S lines in the next few years! I think Sou 610 and TVR 602? (not sure on the last engines number) are already doing excursions in Chattanooga area!

  • so is 1218 scrapped or is it on display/

  • She is on display in Roanoke, VA.

  • @me412fan no they stripped it HEAVILY take long time for expriemnts jk about expriemants but they might restore but i doubt it

  • sorry to say this...but trump and gates wont get involved...it does not suit the direction they want to go in...just be glad that these fine steam locomotives are at least carefully preserved...they could have been scrapped...the last time i saw the 1218...it at least had a cosmetic restoration...and remember the engine was in worse shape when it was put back in service in the nineteen eighties...

  • A shame D Trump or B Gates coulden't donate a wee bit of their billions for a cause like restorin some steam.

  • :[ Yes, sad but true. I was at the transportation museum in Roanoke a few months ago, and I was able to look into the firebox of the 1218. The crown sheet is gone, as well as the boiler tubes and most of the major plumbing. Also, as told to me by a museum employee, the valve gear is all frozen up. However, N&W 611 is kept in good shape, and every once in a while she is pushed back and forth down her track by a diesel to lube and exercise her valve gear so it won't freeze up like the 1218's.

  • It is sad of the condition of the 1218. I followed the 1218 from almost the day she was brought in to Irondale from the museum in Roanoke in 1985. I got to ride in the cab while she was in the yard in Chattanooga. That was a blast. Wished I had video camera then. My alternate web page that is linked from my main page on Youtube has pictures of the 1218 in the shop when she was first brought in.

  • #4501 will run again in the near future, but 1218 will sadly never see the day of service again. :(

  • The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum has an ambition to get the 4501 running again as I read in a article in Sept. issue of Trains Magazine. As for the 1218 it would take act of congress to get her going again. Even with congress she's still doomed.

  • yes. Why does the NS just guve up? That's what I like about the UP, they never gave up on their steam excursions (as seeing 844, in my opinion, the most hansome operating SL in USA, being scrapped or just retired, That would be a disaster!)

  • steam locomotives and maintenance are very expensive...but the UP has realized the great publicity that steam engines and historic deisels bring...their program works very well...but dont look forward to seeing a BigBoy run...enjoy the 3985...and 844...and 6936...you have to give them credit...

  • I never said I don't like 844, 3985, or 6936

  • i plan to bring back one of the bigboys, very soon!

  • The NS people need to get the 2-6-6-6 In baltimore and put it back on the rails.....they'd make a mint in ticket fees! BRING BACK THE STEAM! UP is making you look bad!

  • What happened to the shops after NS shut down the steam program?

  • The building is still in use for diesel engine repairs and services. Equipment only used for steam engine repair was sold off. The wheel lathe I believe is at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.

  • I hope that there still remain some that are capable of completing a complete tear down and rebuild remaining, to allow the continued enjoyment of operating steam locomotives. These beasts need to be torn apart on the basis of hours of use.

  • Great Behind the Scenes Action of the NS Steam Shops! Losing the NS Steam Program was a complete disaster! Worse than the Dismal Swamp Wreck of '86!

  • What happened at Dismal Swamp in 1986?

  • Yea it is nice to see the only thing is they never finished the project the 1218 was given to us empty and so no internal parts just an empty metal shell.... Plus they did that on purpose (which made some very enthustic train people mad :( ) Still not much you can do....

Also are you sure on the date? (just wondering :) )

    Thanks,

    Mano

  • Whoa! Manokiller should see this vid, he works at the Viginia Museum of Transport and the 1218 is on display there!

  • Thanks for showing us all how they overhaul Steam Locomotives. Wonderful perservation of Steam train Iron Horse History.
