  • I had the exact same sound on my v6 accord. I didn't get it fixed in time though because I had no idea what it was. I was driving casually on the highway one day and boom, one of the spark plugs blew out of the head. You should get this checked out before you get a huge bill. Most likely it's your valves

  • Transmission pump gears.

  • Mine did this it was my altenator :P

  • @TheDataZoo

    What car you had?

  • @vaporazor 1993 accord

  • I have that same noise at low rpms on my gsr. Mine might be the water pump, or tensioner bearings. I'm replacing all that, & see if it goes away. You should take the side cover off and see if the noise gets louder...

  • Questions to ask SELF...does it overheat, use too much oil,...screeching noises when applying accelerator @ 1k rpm,...is there white smoke coming out of the exhaust? Perhaps, you have raced your car extremely and, cam pulley jumped a tooth...never know.

Simple thing is replace water pump, timing belt, belt tensioner and, lastly adjust your valves to factory specs. Everything should be where it should...good luck!

  • what was it

  • change belt.

    what are you wating for?

  • bearing in the power steering pump is going out or possible air in power steering fluid. if the fluid is not foaming i would suspect the pump bearing.

  • this happens to my integra too!

  • Dude i have the same problem. Im really wondering what it is. I dont hear it on the outside of the car though. Only the inside

  • has this problem been fixed yet? what makes you think it's the belt? did you check your motor mount or your exhaust/exhaust manifold heat shield?

  • is your car shaking obviously under this problem?

  • Bet you your alternator bracket is loose... or one of your drive accessories.

  • you need a stethescope to listen to specific parts. sounds like a loose valve to me.

  • one of the first times I did a timing belt on these engines I thought the ballance belt was a little loose , thought the spring might have lost some of it's tensioning ability so I tightened it a little more. made a noise ,readjusted and it was fine. ballance belts seem loose compared to timing belts

  • How much does it cost to do a timing belt replacement, and how much is it for a head job or valve job?

    model:Hyundai 2004 v6.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

  • yeah u might even change the valves and calibrate the heads!!

  • are you sure the noise ifs from the timing belt?????

  • it may be from the timing belt being to tight because my friends gsr used to wine like it was supercharged and we losened the belt a bit

  • Sounds like a howling bearing on one of the timing belt tensioners they should have replaced it with the belt.

  • These engines have a timing belt and a balancer belt... and the noise is the balancer belt is not timed correctly... Im assuming it has a minor vibration with the noise.. but Im more than certain that what it is..

  • i have accord 96 and i have the same exact problem since I have replaced the timing belt and brought it back to the mechanic he get it a notch down but he couldn’t get it out completely and it’sover 86.000 since I replaced with that noise and car runs just fine it’s annoying, I’m about to replaced again but take it to a different mechanic maybe I get lucky this time with a noise

  • when you would drive the car, did it feel like the engin was sortta being bogged down? i know since yours is an automatic if might not, but my sister's 95 accord is manual, and it makes the same noise, but once it gets to about 2600RPM, it boggs down until it gets to 3000RPM

  • have you still got the car and how is it

  • i got that exact noise on my 04 civic did you ever find out what it was?

  • timing belt pullys,

  • I would say the HARMONIC BALANCER....

  • Basically, who ever did the wanna be repair didn't know their ass from their elbow...dude do yoursleft a favor and 1st thing is to relace you mechanic 2nd find a good certified mechanic that repairs only honda cars...Like the say is said you get what you pay for ...In spanish...Lo barato saldra caroooooooooo

  • Sounds like its hitting the timing belt cover.

  • I am gonna do my timing belt next week I wanted to know how do you adjust the tension for the timing belt and remove the Crank pulley bolt

    thank you

  • @kzkevin888 The timing belt has its own tensioner. After replacing mine I had to back off the bolt (which you can do without taking anything else apart, it sticks out the side of the plastic belt cover) turn the engine over by hand a little then do the bolt back up. As far as removing the Crank pulley bolt there's a tool to hold the crank in place then I had to heat the bolt up a little with a butane torch, my tork bar with an extension on it to make it even longer would not crack the bolt.

  • honda took mine in and replaced the belt and tensioner with honda parts no more noise for me thanks honda oh did i mention they did this for free top class all i paid for was the honda belt buzzin hope this helps my guess is ur belt was replaced with non honda parts u should get it fixed as belt could be damaged as my old belt was stretched to the point that metal was visible after 1 year and 8,000 miles hope this helps p.s that noise is exactly the same as what mine used to have

  • i appreciate experience over amateur i.e me however aint these automatic tensioners on these engines i mean mine inparticular is a civic d16v1 and i assumed that it onl had 1 tension setting plus tightened after tension is set to 45 nm torque

  • improperly tensioned timing belt (yes theres a special way to do this *hint not by hand) my experience is that i've been working on these cars for years

  • some people obviously dont listen hey guys 2 - 3 thousand miles really he said still doing it after 2 year lol losers i have had this noise on my civic for almost a year now and im pretty sure that 1 of the 2 components mentioned previously are to blame however we will find out next week as im changing both

  • hey i have a 04 civic with this noise i have narrowed it down to either the water pump or faulty timing belt kit hope this is of any help

  • timming belt I mean... not steering pump belt

  • that means belt too tight or belt was recently replaced and is still stretching

  • Sometimes after you install the timing belt you have to give it about 2-3 thousand miles to get into it's grooves. Sometimes it could take 10 thousand but very rarely.

  • It could be a bad pulley.

  • Its the timing belt tensioner pully, its a dryed up bearing.

That is caused by overtighten the tensioner.

  • its the bearing of the tentioner :)

  • thats your power steering. add power steering fluid. if not then put some oil on the belt tensionor

  • better watch that belt bud..

if that sh snaps thats the end of your car..

I had it happen 3 times to me and vowed to never ever own honda again.

the first 2 times that belt broke I repaired the engine both times the valves ended up bent and I had to pay over 500 bucks TWICE to replace the upper valve assembly.

The third time I junked the piece of crap.

I happend while I was on an expressway in the middle of nowhere.

In all the years I never had a car loose a timing belt especially 3 times

  • Some Honda Accords timing belt tension is VERY loose. If the timing belt is even slightly too tight it can cause noise. Note that the looseness of these Accords' timing belt is unusual so my guess is most mechanics would think the belt tension is normal not knowing that some Accords have to have the belt very loose. The belt is self tensioned by a spring and everything needs to be freely moving so this little spring can tension the belt and do not try to tighten it more than the spring does.

  • vtec kick in yo

  • @sipe8128 Mine doesn't and as far as I know. Everything is original on it.

  • same here on a 106 1.4i that are the bearings around the belt when it's hot, maybe water pump, tensioner or other one...

hope will loose with time and stop that noise...

  • try changing the cam gear sprocket, its probably worn alittle and needs to be replaced, it wont damage ur engine but if u dnt want that noise change it, plus with newer cam gear sprocket u will get more power!

  • is it a new timing belt? because my car's timing belt makes a similar noise and its a fairly new belt and the only reason why it does it is because its new and it hasnt worn in yet.

  • might of skip a tooth and valves are hiting a lil... we cant really heard the problem cuz pointing at the power steering got to pointed at the valve cover or at least the timingbelt cover

  • a fuckin peice of shit carrrr

  • sounds lik the bearin in the water pump

  • its fine its just supercharge:)

  • my power steering belt was too tight but it sounded like it was supercharged

  • @ACcCoRd how is the car now? how is it running?

  • @spleechmaster ye the cars running really good, its done about 50,000kms more since this video...ive had mechanics try fix the noise many times but theyve never diagnosed it properly, it still does it. It hasnt effected the car at all so i just live it

  • @ACcCoRd if they take off one belt at a time, eg. power steering/AC and alternator, does it eliminate the noise?

  • Thank goodness for my timing chain..

  • if its still making the noise, get a pulley stethascope, and listen to each one, yes, you will hear noise on all of em, but the bad one will hurt your ears and be obvious.

  • anytime the words timing belt come up, thats the time when all you back yard bobs need to take it to a professional. so you may get lucky and do it right in 8 hours, but its not worth the gamble, especially if you have an interference engine. fuck up on the teeth or line up a few degrees, and you've just layed a valve into a piston, then its a boat anchor.

  • a lot of aftermarket belts dont have the perfect tooth shape and make noise for life

  • reminds me of a belt thats off 1 tooth on the cam.. checking valve lash is a good idea.

  • Welcome to the honda world. Always change the water pump and tensioner when replacing a timing belt. I've heard, and dealt with this noise on at least twenty hondas now. This sound, indeed, is the bearing in the water pump. at low RPM the inner shaft of the watter pump wobbles around just a bit, causing this exact noise. you may get anywhere from 10 days to 5 years out of it. luck of the draw. locked pump creates HAVOC. Change tensioner, pump, and belt ASAP if you hear the noise in this video.

  • @brk2586 would an old timing belt that needs replacing make a water pump not work right and make the car overheat?

  • I think you screwed the bearings in one of the pulleys by having the belt to tight. I replaced mine not so long ago...but I know what I'm doing. Take it to a garage next time dumbass

  • sounds like bad water pump or bearing in timing belt tensioner, good luck, hope you get it fixed soon

  • Did you replace the timing components such as tensioners and pulleys/bearings?

  • Did you check your alternator?

  • mine made the same noise, then it slipped twice and snapped right in half and bent my valves, i recommend you change it very soon, and do your water pump and belt tensioner while you're at it also.

  • pulley bearing noise-obvious

  • its not r timing belt at all

  • It sounds like your valves are out of sync with your engine, or your water pump is messed up.

  • something is spinning and making a noise. There are several things in that area. You can use a long screwdrive to listen with. Stick the handl end in your ear and the pointed end on the different engine components. If that doesn't work, you can remove some of the components to see if the noise goes away. For instance, undo the P/S pump, and or the A/C compressor. etc etc. If you eliminate the exterior components, then the only thing left would be the water pump or the tension pulley, typically.

  • water pump

  • stupid video

  • Man i had the exact same problem on my accord 2000 coupe..when u change the timing belt u should change the water pump and the timing belt cover..sometimes it rubs on it causing that noise..also change the balance shaft belt and make sure somone proffesional balances both of them.

  • You've probably solved this by now,but I think it's the water pump whining.

Did you change it when you did the belt?

I always do since it's right there.

  • this is how new belts usually sound yo

  • No it's not. What a moron.

  • stop beating on your car and this shit will stopp happening

  • Im having a same problem on my prelude after i got my belt changed its making noise occasionally but its not like this noise mine is like squeeling. check my video.

  • @joshpollock1990 well no shit its the power steering belt, the noise is coming from the timing belt area so what am i gonna do, film the headlight?

  • it might be rubbing on the timing cover common problem need to replace the cover

  • idk wtf ur lookin at but thats the power steering belt u dumbass

  • pull the belts off a run it for a sec too see if the nosie is still there ......i know its probly a pain but u would now weather or not if its coming from the timing belt or in fact if its one of the pulleys

  • kinda sounds like bearing on one of the pulleys or alternator whine

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for all the info guys, its funny how this video was made nearly 2 years ago and despite trying to fix the problem the car still makes the same noise present day! hasnt effected the car in anyway

  • does it sound like its comin from the passenger footwell my dc2 makes the same noise

  • does it sound like its comin from the passenger footwell my dc2 makes the same noise

  • try shuving it up your ass

  • @ACcCoRd affected

  • your tensioning pulliy is loose or worn

  • depending on what the valve lash is many things could happen adjusting valves is easy and hondas dont have hydrolic valve train there solid lifters atleast honda's from 2001 and below so adjusting them should be normal and easy if your mechanicly enclined..dont critisize my spelling imma mechanice not a english teacher!

  • adjust your valves dude!

  • lol i know..i dont think theyve ever been adjusted, will anything happen if i just leave it?

  • @ACcCoRd yep get your valve clearance checked

  • yes your valve could get bent if they are not ajusted properly

  • @ACcCoRd if you have a 10 mm wrench, a flathead SD, and a feeler gauge its not hard to DIY valve adjustments bro.

  • did you replace the tensioner if not then u should..

  • mine does the same thing, little worse actually

  • I fixed mine; it was a balancer belt being too tight. I release the adjusting nut and retighten which release the tension on the balancer belt.

  • Good tip.

You can also use a length of solid metal bar, approx 1/4" diameter and around 2 to 3 foot long.

Hold one end touching the engine, and hold the other end in your hand, with the thumb on that hand in your ear.

It's not as sensitive as the hose method but can be useful to pinpoint sounds after you've used the hose.

    ** Same cautions/warnings apply **

  • ok my 98 is doing the same noise and i have tied it whit all belt off just the motor turning... some people talk about water pump or a too much tension on the timing belt, this is what i am going to look for tomorow

  • its fine, my friends car sounds the same

  • Power steering pump. Went out on my brothers accord and was making that sound for years. It would also make these funny whooing noises when he was going around corners

  • thanks for ur input..how much is a new ps pump? so your brothers accord was making the exact same noise? or just similar to it

  • Exactly the same, we replaced it and it went away. Something else is wrong with the steering rack, but I don't know exactly what, it has lots of hard spots, even with the new silent pump. It was about $120 US and you HAVE to use Honda fluid in it or else it will fail.

  • thanks heaps for all your help, my steerings still light and smooth so i dunno if i should replace it yet, hopefully it doesnt fail suddenly one day

  • No problem, his didnt epic fail, and it had been that way, well, since he bought it, several years... It just got harder to steer, so we were like "screw it, lets throw another on" and it helped some but there are still hard spots. I think you should be fine, lol.

  • thats happend when the mecanic put the timing belt too tight..he got to open i again the timing belt cover and fix the problem...

  • the last civic i had,97 d16yd?, made the same nioses, i bought it used and had the belt replaced prior to my taking. at 89,00mi later in hotter days it ran really hot this is making sense now.. the timing belt is off and a bit tight.

  • mine is a 91 and its got 337,000 miles and the comm thing on the older accords was that the balncer shaft seal would pop out and leak oil ....so i had a shop do it the frist time and cost around 300.00 plus parts and about 60k later the same seal pop out agine and thats when i ask the honda dealer and found that they had the problme and they made this part that keeps the seal from poping out and i changed the both nelts agine and waterpump and so far no troble and it didnt cost me 300 for labor

  • so many opinions...

  • It could be your belt or you transmission which coulde overturning itself which can cause the engine to overheat also you belt could be run down and is starting to stiffin up which can cause it to break apart

  • Remove the covers and start the car, watch the timing belt and balancer belt to see if either are moving side to side when they shouldnt be. Also from the video, it sounds like power steering... remove the belt from the power steering and see if that fixes the problem too...

  • i sure you probably already know this but the belt you showed in the video is not the timing belt. the timing belt runs the camshafts from the crankshaft. the belt showed is an accessory belt. it would run the ac, power steering, or alternator.

  • yea i know , the noise was coming from the belts so i figured to film that area

  • do not drive your car if your powersteering fluid level is low because it may wear up the powersteering housing.

  • my honda accord have the 99 percent same noice too. it is the gear from the timing balancer at the balancer where you can lock it with a little rod. the rest is the aircon, powersteering belt. but some noice also come from the powersteering mechanism.just like in some superchargers.

  • Update. The car was taken in, the timing belt was loosed as much as it could, however, the noise still remains. Based on the comments ive recieved on this video its probably a worn tensioner

  • that is because you installed it wrong so the valves are in wrong position

  • if the valves are in the wrong position than they would eather get smashed or not run at all....

  • This noise sounds familiar. I am researching my 97' Accord with what also I believe to be the balancer belt. I had the air conditioner go out and water ended up in the cabin. Now the engine is making similar noises and it's definitely going to have to be addressed. My Honda has 220,000+/K and she needs some TLC now.

  • I just did my timing belt on my 92 accord, it never got changed out and has 345*** miles on it.. nothing ever happened, but good thing, too. It just goes to show how good oil change and maintenance pays off.. Only problem is now it's making the same noise too. I just hope it'll turn quiet after a few months. It's just a very big hassle to redo it again.

  • It's my balancer belt that was causing the noise on my H22. I have the H23 tensioner conversion and the F22B1 are identical to the H23 tensioner conv.

  • this is why I do my own work almost all the time. I deal with the hard knocks to hands, knees and back but it's still much better than dealing with mechanics who screw up a good machine and can't do their jobs right because they don't know how or the shop business rushes then into crappy work.

learn how and do your own work people - it's way way cheaper, it can get done right, and you get all kinds of good feelings from doing it yourself and knowing it's done right and didn't cost a fortune.

  • Now my H22A is doing it too! It was doing it on both my F22B1s and now my H22? lol damn.

  • Me too man! i just swap my civic h22 and it do the same noise! its a problem or its ok?

  • It'll be common since it's hard to really tension the T-Belt cause I followed the manuals given too and it still does it. I'm leaning towards the Balancer Belt though since it was pretty tight. My T-Belt wasn't that tight though. So I'm guessing it's my Balancer Belt.

  • I had the same problem on my 2001 honda accord. It was the power steering pump. When give it a little gas it gets louder. pretty sure it is your power steering pump.

  • I have Honda Accord 99 4 cyc. VTEC, Recently replaced the timing belt & water pump by local mechanic and he screwed up, the engine noise was so loud @ 100km spd all windows glass making noises. I took it back to shop they opened the timing belt section and found it was Installed by Incorrectly (this time Mechanic was different), He Installed the timing belt again but now runs okay but engine squealing noise is coming. He said the noise is coming from power sterring belt but Iam not convienced.

  • if this is a honda engine with a balancer, then what probably happened is the mechanic failed to keep the correct alignment of the balancer pully. the best method is to paint your own alignment marks on every single moving or adjustable part behind the timing cover, after rotating the engine to the correct TDC position as well. don't just rely on the factor stamped markings - too hard to see.

So, if your mechanic got the balancer pulley off by even 1 tooth, that would vibrate like hell.

  • this is in response to someone elses comment about a bad vibration - not the sound heard in this video. I'm still wondering what that is.

  • what do you drive? i have a 92 honda accord 235,000 miles, burns no oil quiet as can be 38MPG highway

  • its a 94 accord, 125,000 miles. Dont really know its fuel economy but its pretty efficient, thats about all its good for.

  • Hi, can i see your car vin number send to me please

  • if you give me the vin number I can tell your problem right away

  • 235,000 miles......thats 378,000km..and i thought 200,000km was alot....wow thats amazing, mine has half ther mileage but double the problems

  • lol yeah i know, this is like 1 out of the 25 problems this car has, costs me a fortune to keep it going and its only got 125,000 miles! im getting rid of it soon

  • Mine's got 160,000 miles and no problems...I think typically they're pretty good cars.

  • wow 160,000 miles thats like 250,000km...that many K's is deemed alot in australia, but everywhere else in the world 200,000 miles is even nothing...and thats like over 300,000km which is crazy!

  • Yeah, It's really not all that much. I bought it with 117,000 miles and it's never given me any problems. (Mines a 1996 EX I4 v-tec.) I think you just got a lemon.

  • I replaced the timing belt and water pump on a 1993 accord which is pretty much same engine design as yours. Right after, it was making a squealing noise, I went back an checked everything, but everything was fine. Then I talked to a friend of mine who is a pro and told me that I left the timing belt too tight. I loosened a bit, and sure enough the squealing was gone. Just make sure that they changed the water pump and check the tensioner.

  • I remember the good 'ol days when it came time to start changing belts(like the timing belt) and brakes and such, I would trade the car in a get a new one.

Cant afford to do that anymore! :-(

  • sounds like the water pump

  • Agreed with deteyal, you got a noisy water pump, you gotta replace that with the tensioner too everytime you do a timing belt. Make sure you also get the timing marks down tight.

  • Hey, your steering wheel and instrument panel are on the wrong side of the car!

And you got out the wrong door.

  • Cars are right hand drive in Australia..

  • I know, I'm just messin' with ya! :-)

I had my timing belt and all the other belts changed about 3 weeks ago including the water pump on my Hyundai Elantra 2002 and had the exact same noise as you. I've only put about 600 miles on the car since and the noise does seem to be getting less and less.

Mechanic said he would open her back up for free and slacken off the tension a bit, but I just don't have the time to take it in. Especially since it sounds like it's going away.

  • UPDATE!

Finally got my car in to the mechanic. At this point I had about 900 miles(1448 km) and it has been a month. Whirring, howling noise still not subsiding! They took care of it! Mechanic told me they were able to get to the tensioner without having to take off the power steering pump, etc. No charge. Car is a pleasure to drive now!

Not gonna mess with timing belts anymore. Either my next car will have a timing chain or if it doesn't, I'll make sure I buy a car with a non-interf. engine!

  • Comment removed

  • I have 1997 honda accord v-tec with the same sound..that sound are from the tensor of the timing belt..

  • hi, thanks for the info..so your accord makes the exact same noise and your 100% sure its the tensioner?

  • Hi, yeah you have problem with your tensioner and water pump if you see your temperature gauge is too high..in all 1994 1997 honda accord the temperature has to be in 1/4 you have more than 1/4 in there..I want to know how meany miles have your car thanks...

  • Actaully the temperature is not too high. I bought this car brand new 15 years ago and the gauge has always read what it does in the video..the car has done 200,000km...i think thats around 125,000 miles

  • Hi,Sometimes when you go to any mecanic and you tell him to that you want the timing change that the only think he did with out water pump and seals change, and repeat you have problem with your water pump and tensioner 1-your water pump maybe he don't change or he put a aftermarket water pump 2-you have in your car a 15 year old tensioner.....

  • it must be the tensioner then, my car was leaking coolant and the service centre said it was a worn water pump so they replaced it along with the timing belts etc, the service records say the seals and water pump were all replaced but it doesnt say anything about the tensioner being replaced so that must be the prob...thanks

  • My Cd5 makes the same noise

  • MY UNCLES FORD MONDEO 1:8L TURBO DIESEL had the same noise it was overtigted he changed the belt the noise was gone

  • balance shaft belts were to tight

  • oh ya, forgot to mention I have a 97 accord as well

  • I replaced my timing belt and water pump about 5 or 6 years ago. Had the same exact noise afterward. I asked my mechanic and he said the new timing belt was tight and the noise would go away as the belt was worn in. I still have the noise right around the same rpm as in your car, but I think it has gotten better.

  • thanks for the info..ive noticed when the cars cold and being driven theres no noise at all, once the car warms up it slowly starts and then gets pretty noticable. its been a year or 2 since the tbelt change

  • Hi ACcCoRd! Just wondering...did you ever figure out what was causing the noise? I just got my 2002 Honda Civic back today after a timing belt and water pump change. It's making EXACTLY the same noise as yours. All other belts were replaced as well. I'm taking it back in tomorrow, but would like to have suggestions for the mechanic if you could tell me what was wrong with yours. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you!

  • Thanks for your comment. Based upon what people have told me here, its probably an overtightened belt. I went to a mechanic a week ago and he was 90% sure the noise was a result of an overtightened timing belt. So i think thats the cause. Good luck with yours

  • hondas dont have push rods

  • have similar sound. maybe the belt is to tight??

  • sounds more like a power steering pump is taking a dump.thats the kind of noise mine did right before it went out within weeks.and i think the timing belt suppose to be change around 90,000 miles give or take what your owners manuel will tell you.i dont think you will get a sound of when your timming belt will go out on you, it just will and your car will just turn off.

  • Ever find out what the deal was, with your Honda ?

I got a 99' Accord, with 153,000 miles. Been a great car, but I notice a very slight noise....very recently.

Very similar to yours.. Not quite as loud, but noticeable (to me).

I love the Accord otherwise. Never had any other problems. oil change every 3K miles and trans-fluid every 9 months.

What type oil you use ?

    Is car okay now ?

    What was the deal ?

  • Based upon what people have told me, its most likley an over tightened belt. Most mechanics ive been to cant pin point the noise and say its easier ( but way more expensive) to do the timing belt service all over again. It doesnt seem to harm the engine in anyway so i figure ill leave it until my car is due for the timing belt again. I use castrol magnatec and have since i bought the car new

  • My car sounded EXACTLY like yours after my timing belt change. I got my car back today and apparently there is a plastic face that covers something and once it's removed, it breaks an already deteriorating seal. Most will overtighten that plate to to seal it causing something on the inside to hit it occasionally making it sound like a piece of junk. I would&
