@StoniestStoned whatever man, when someone is using technology to their advantage, improving their drumming abilities, I don't think there is a way to "cheat", if that were the case, all drummers that aren't "cheaters" would be using bass drum pedals that worked like the ones from the 1930's

RESPECT THE ADLER!

so what. its expected that you take liberties when covering a song. learning it note for note is too strenuous (probs spelt that wrong) so changing your fills is normal. its also fun to get creative in the context of a strict peice

I could not agree with you more, we are all humans with different points of views. Logically as musicians we will feel different emotions as we listen to different songs, therefore our enterpretation may vary even though we base it one someones work. Of coarse of you feel that you cannot take liberties then don't, learn it exactly the way whoever played it, just don't expect other drummers or musicians to do exactly what you do. I say learn the song exactly as it goes, then add some variations.
