It really is nice to see some actual talent, rather than all the heavy metal crap like Kiss and Metallica. What a brilliant line up of some of the best and my personal favourite musicians! Keep grooving hard guys! :D
I stand corrected---Gadd doesn't need a double pedal,BUT,according to my sources that are close,he wants to show he can be contemporary---He doesn't need to prove anything, because he invented contemporary drumming as we know it----Play in time, play the groove, play for the song. The essence of drumming
@ralfodrum great words. Steve Gadd is the man of drumming. He started to use double pedal late, maybe in 1992...but I like his double pedal work with licks, pocket playing...Gadd is God :D
I HAD to buy the video---Gadd is king, the groovemaster---I don't care what style you play---I've been teaching and playing over 45 years,We can ALL learn something from Steve Gadd.
Is there any footage of Mr. Gadd ever messing up while trying to play those incredible rhythmic figures against what the other cats are playing? It just seems like there is no "messing up" when it comes to Gadd.
As with other professional drummer, Gadd does mess up from time to time (believe it or not). If you're observant you can spot his 'mistakes' at times. Of course, they're so minor that it'd take a really trained ear to pick it out
@Axberry Sorry dude, but he's not using double pedal in this solo. Even if he's moving also the left leg, he's not playing the double pedal...it's not necessasry for those licks ;-)
@smoukondeuoter Sorry, but he is using double pedal from 1:35 to the end solo...Those licks (ratamaque and triplets) in this solo he played unisono on double bass pedal. It´s Gaddism.
@lexbrekelmans Yes I look two beaters, please look at this better and listen sound of bass drum on the end. From 1:38 and triplets he played unisono with beaters. You can see it good on Steve Gadd Master series, where he played drum solo on 3/2 clave
@MMMuller Everyone who learns traditional grip playing .Eventually develops there own way of holding the sticks even with a traditional grip or matched it becomes personalized .So there is no wrong way .It's what ever feels good to you .And the same goes for Moeller also i feel .
@TheChiFlows yeah i know, thats right. but im talking about his crooked shoulder, which is so unhealthy for his back. as mentioned at this page its due to the way the snare is set up (for mathed grip i guess) - btw. steve gadd is my favourite drummer
Gadd does it like it's nothing. It's almost like he's thinking "Hmm, okay, my drum solo... let's switch grips... a little of this, a little of that...." And everybody else can only watch and wonder how the hell he does it. Every sound matters with Gadd's solos, yet he never ever loses the groove.
That was one of the tastiest solos I have ever heard.

@chungiemunchin "Is there any footage of Mr. Gadd ever messing up "
I spotted a little 'hick up' at 1:01 (seems to loose grip on his left). :P
I think Gadd's internal clock is an atomic one. :-)
The guy is amazing.

his snara is set up too low.....because of that his shoulder is wrong...

is he using a double pedal at the end?
hes moving his left foot like crazy and the hi hat stays still
machine00head 1 year ago
Yup, you can see the other hitter at 0:34 for a little bit when the camera guy moves back a bit.
CalvertPratt561 1 year ago
@machine00head yeah...
r3ck0rd 1 year ago
look at his shoulder when changing grip at 0:37, sometimes traditional grip can be played wrong easily, even by the best
MMMuller 1 year ago
@MMMuller no, it wasn't gripped wrong, it's because he set up his snare too low.
r3ck0rd 1 year ago
@r3ck0rd hmm good point, lets hope so.
MMMuller 1 year ago
@MMMuller well you can see that his grip was well, but the shoulder problem, so not comfortable I think...
