@envyus83 If you ever have any possible thought about watercooling... go with a reference card. If you want a quiet card that is dual slot, go with this. if you want a very quiet card and don't care about size, go with an Asus Direct CU2 version.
Nvidia pushed back some of their new cards, but I'm looking to sell these cards to buy a pair of the next series.

NICE card. I made a huge mistake buying the GTX 590, because it dumps a lot of heat into my case :( - Btw very nice review. I like the tone of your voice. It's very presentable.
@SirCrest I'm still struggling to have my graphics card exceed 35 celsius, but that might be down to the case airflow I have, or perhaps I haven't stress tested it very well.
@CAsharp50 Yes, one is for 2 Card SLI, 2 is for triple SLI. The reason it comes with both is because the cooler makes it hard to connect so you need extra long cables. So if you SLI this with perhaps 2 other cards you will need to make sure you have the cables.
Would you say this card is worth the money? Its retail is $699 AUD in Australia were as a comparable GTX 580 Twin Frozor 2 with 1.5gb VRAM is $549 AUD would you say the lightning xtreme edition is worth the additional price?
@TheWretchedWorld This card along with fits a certain bracket of uses. If you don't care about noise, go with an EVGA reference 3GB model, if you don't care about high resolutions with the eyecandy, go with a 1.5gb model. It's not worth the money if you're not running Nvidia Surround or other really high resolutions with everything maxed out. If you're on a single 1080p/1200p/1440p monitor, go with 1.5gb
@SirCrest you say that, when you don't realize the high performance demand all the new PC games have nowadays, if you want to play on anywhere near max graphics, you need a 2-3 gig.
@SirCrest i play Bf3 maxxed out, Ultra +x16AA 26'' single monitor display and i don't dip below 40 FPS at max load. And keep in mind i haven't overclocked my CPU or GPU.
I have a question, can you SLI this card with another 580 but by a different company? Because I have a EVGA 580 can I SLI that card with this GTX 580 lightning? Thanks
congrats on your card, don't worry about mumbling or anything, I loved this video, keep it up!
I bought the GTX 580 Lightning (simple.. not xtreme unfortunately) 1 month ago ... and I want to buy this card again to enable SLI. I saw big difference in price between these cards (lightning simple and lightning xtreme) and the performance difference it's just about memory... 1.53 gb / 3 gb .. hmm..
@gizfaya Probably because you put them so close they are silent with a single slot between the fans. You should have gone with 3GB reference cards from EVGA and watercooled.
@SirCrest yeah , using a gigabyte x58extreme mobo thinking of changing to a gigabyte x58oc mobo for the pcie slott layout, 16x then 8x then 16x then 8x they look like dual slott spacings on all pcie slotts, that should give me a dual slott spacing between the 16x slotts, but would realy like to save my dollars for the upcoming lga2100 cpu & mobo?
@jezzauk06 You can't from what I can see. They are wired to the VRM's i think. You can take a very small piece of electrical tape and cover them if you wish. I have yet to as they aren't overly bright and I can't see them from under my desk.
thats a very nice graphics card. I have an Asus 6970 which im happy with but Im thinking about getting this card....maybe even 2. My wallet is crying. lol
@jetgeo4 Honestly, I wish I didn't get these cards. Not because they aren't amazing, but because I want to watercool, and these aren't reference PCB's so I can't get full coverage waterblocks.
@ZEB0V You need atleast two in order to run 3 monitors at all. Only AMD cards can run 3+ monitors on a single card. These cards should run the game on high/ultra at that resolution perhaps around 50-60fps based off my experience in the beta.
@ZEB0V Go for these cards in sli if you do triple monitor gaming, you will definately need the VRAM and the horsepower. 2 of these cards will deliver that.
@acemace3618 I was playing the Beta at 2560x1600 highest with both of these at about 50-80fps. So I would say yes. But at 1600x900, go with a lightning or a 590. Since 3GB is for "special" situations.
@acemace3618 I can't really tell you. I dropped off the AMD line a while ago so I don't know how it compares. I can tell you that currently nothing beats intel's lineup.
If you're running 1080p, it probably will to a certain extent. By that I mean. You may not get 150fps in BC2 but maybe 120. Either way the processor won't drop your FPS below something you'll notice. So just crank up visual settings anyways.
@Elite199 I have no idea. The card is 11.75 inches long if that helps you. But I would NOT advise putting ANYTHING in the slot under it. Keep at least a slot clearance. The fans are so close to scraping anything under it you would destroy the fan, the performance, and the device under it. So make sure you have one slot in between.
@SirCrest Thanks for the reply - unfortunately I found out the Storm Scout case can only take 10.5" cards maximum, so that means only the normal GTX 580 would fit.
@Elite199 depends on where you would put your sound card. if it's atop of the video card, then it should fit as most sound cards require only pci expansion slot
What resolution do you play games in? I noticed you had a 30 inch Dell monitor, does that mean you apply the resolution 2560X1600? What kind of fps do your SLI'd GTX 580s achieve in Crysis 2?
@prashy90 I only recently got the 30" monitor. I played only a couple minute in the beggining but got about 50-55fps on 2560x1600, Dx11, Ultra, with the high res textures. It honestly didn't feel too perky, so I would probably turn off DX11. Smooth as silk, but over 60fps the game feels much more responsive.
I finally got my GTX 580 lightning extreme edition. But when I install the drivers it says there are no Card. But I can still play games but not on highest graphics tho... Please if you know the solution for this please respond! :) I would really appreciate it. :)
@ZemHem1337 I have not heard or had that issue before. And honestly, I have no idea. Have you perhaps tried to email MSI about it or checked out some hardware forums? Perhaps Overclock * net would help.
@Arnoud1987000 1080P not usually unless you're running super giant textures. But for multimonitor or a 2560xXXXX monitor you will see framerates stay higher longer usually
@TheExprima Better cooler more power phases and for a card that can easily hit over 1ghz on the core with decent temps (even in sli) i think it really worth the money...
Hello SirCrest, i some questions about this card aswell i hope you can answer as i am days from buying it for my new pc setup. 1) How long is the card from the actual metal attach plate to the end? 2) The 40-50FPS you got on BF3 alpha testing was that on normal clock mhz? 3) Is the Afterburner software required to be installed for this card to run? - Steele from Denmark
@Steele11000 These cards at "stock" are 832mhz, which is conservative for these binned chips. I could hit 1ghz on each probably. As far as the length I don't understand. The entire length of the card? Or just the shroud? or just the PCB? Afterburner is MSI's overclocking and diagnostic software. These cards can run without it, the software is just nice to have. I recommend people use it because it's very useful.
@SirCrest Ah cheers okay thats good to know. No i mean what the total length of the card is without measuring the actual display connection ports (DVI connectors) You see im trying to find a case which this card will fit, and so far many threads on the forums has implicated that the card in fact is shorter than the retail listed length of 305mm (30.5cm) Im sorry for my bad english, hope you can help though.
@Steele11000 Sorry for the delay, I took out the cards and measured. From the backplate but not the ports to the PCB it's 11inches, if to the shroud its less than 11 and 3/4th inches. These cards are actually smaller than the 6970 lightnings. I think that's 29.84cm.
@SirCrest Very nice, as my speculations was right, the card was a bit shorter than the listed official listed measurement. Thank you very much for going through this much effort and i am glad to say that your review has gotten yet another owner of this magnifident graphic card. Best gamer regards from Denmark.
@Arnoud1987000 I've yet to push these cards to be honest. 1Ghz is doable on these, but not guaranteed. The price would rise dramatically I'd guess since you'd have to bin these chips more strictly.
@MrElcorado I've read that review, and they don't put the Lightning against the XE. Also, the regular lightning does win, on sub 1080p resolutions, but only by about half an FPS on average, which is statistically insignificant. The 3GB modules have a miniscule bit more latency which hurts it slightly on lower resolutions.
Can someone tell me how the fans turn to the colour wthite from the colour blue? Are there any chemicals in the fans? Is this not bad for the health when you think that there comes hot air through the fans and goes into the room where the pc is. Thank you!
@MrElcorado The fans are coated in a temperature sensitive paint. It's the same kind of chemical you might find in one of those old action figures that changes color in ice water. In this case it goes white at a specific temperature. It's not dangerous at all.
Hey man, got a question for ya - I'm getting a 580 as well, but I can't decide between this one or the Asus 580 Matrix; which one is better? In terms of pricing, they seem the same. I wanna give them a solid OC as well, so maybe to 900 on the core.
Please let us know if this monster card will be able to run Battlefield 3 at max settings. When the time is here... (Oct 25 2011). Thanks for the great upload btw.
@venomx723272 With a single card it ran the BF3 Alpha at 40-50fps on highest, with both in SLI it ran it at 70-80fps on highest. Never dipping below 60.
@SelryamZephine Like Kypton said, you can run one of these on that PSU, but to be completely straight with you, there is no point in buying a single card of these. One doesn't have the kind of power needed to run the effects that needs 3GB. if you're going SLI, go 3GB, if not, go with a normal Lightning.
well my computer got mad at me for looking at another 580 ti and closed out firefox. its just mad because it can run minecraft and its close to its death
Attention all Canadians looking to get this card! Newegg Canada just launched a sale for these cards for $579.99 with no shipping cost! Just a heads up, seeing as they have had such limited availability their whole lifetime.
@IIIKryptonIII It has exhaust ports, but I can tell you that nearly all of it comes out into the case. Mostly out the top of the card/side with the heatpipes, the rest comes out the back of the card near the power connections, and a little bit goes out side the case.
@SirCrest Damn, what a quick reply. Talk about subscriber loyalty! Anyway, it's unfortunate that its not 100% rear exhaust like the EVGA cards (minus the DS version), but that shouldn't matter too much seeing as the Twin Frozr III keeps it pretty cool in the first place, right?
@IIIKryptonIII Highest EVER temps were 68c on the top card 65c on the bottom card, both at 57% fanspeed while running GTA4 maxed with ENB series and dpeasant settings at 3840x2160. I rarely ever hear them and it's only when I pause the game and sit with no sound.
I haf a Haf 932 and the 230mm fan helps move most of the air through my case with no issue. I wouldn't use this card without a HAF or a Raven style case I think, Otherwise you lose the sound profile of these cards.
ugh I hate the blue led's that are incorporated in the GPU the inside of the case is all red and suddenly theres this blue color that lights up and ruins everything. The blue and red mix together and make the inside look purple... i wish there was an off switch on the color it ruins my setup. if the case had been blue it would have been awesome but with red.... its ugly.
I'm actually looking at getting two of these for a custom build, they look like great cards but the one thing that almost anyone will tell you sucks is the attached price tag. However, if you want preformance you need to pay for it.
That said... I'd still like to see these a bit cheaper but the current price tag wont hold me back.
@YourFreeToys They won't drop until something challenges them, which won't be for another couple months or more. Kepler was delayed and we only saw some codenames for the HD7000's so far.
@SirCrest thank you very much. i didn't even know the matrix came out. which one is better for overclocking? and do you know if two of the asus cards will fit in an ASUS P8Z68-V PRO motherboard
@kulpreetg The Asus cards are triple slot, You can simply look at the board on newegg to find out. If two slots are between the PCIe 16x slots then it will work, but the fans might choke for air. My board can support triple slot cards, but my dual slot 580's get plenty of air. They load at about 67c after like an hour of play.
I'm really interested in this card, and I clicked on your video. Boy am I glad, this is possibly one of the best unboxings I've ever seen. Good work, and thank you. Also, hey! I see you have the same keyboard as me! (G15 rev.1) :D
Best review.

@nousername21 I'm sure you could via BIOS modding. Otherwise no, since it's done immediately on bootup where windows has no chance of changing it.

@SirCrest Thanks for the reply - unfortunately I found out the Storm Scout case can only take 10.5" cards maximum, so that means only the normal GTX 580 would fit.
Elite199 5 months ago
@Elite199 depends on where you would put your sound card. if it's atop of the video card, then it should fit as most sound cards require only pci expansion slot
lenchristopher 4 months ago
@lenchristopher Nah, the CM Storm Scout only supports 10.5" cars maximum, I think it's BS =( Will have to upgrade my case.

What resolution do you play games in? I noticed you had a 30 inch Dell monitor, does that mean you apply the resolution 2560X1600? What kind of fps do your SLI'd GTX 580s achieve in Crysis 2?
prashy90 5 months ago
@prashy90 I only recently got the 30" monitor. I played only a couple minute in the beggining but got about 50-55fps on 2560x1600, Dx11, Ultra, with the high res textures. It honestly didn't feel too perky, so I would probably turn off DX11. Smooth as silk, but over 60fps the game feels much more responsive.
SirCrest 5 months ago
I finally got my GTX 580 lightning extreme edition. But when I install the drivers it says there are no Card. But I can still play games but not on highest graphics tho... Please if you know the solution for this please respond! :) I would really appreciate it. :)
ZemHem1337 5 months ago
@ZemHem1337 I have not heard or had that issue before. And honestly, I have no idea. Have you perhaps tried to email MSI about it or checked out some hardware forums? Perhaps Overclock * net would help.

Could u tell where to benefit fom the3GB? which games? and on 1080 P noticable?
Arnoud1987000 6 months ago
@Arnoud1987000 1080P not usually unless you're running super giant textures. But for multimonitor or a 2560xXXXX monitor you will see framerates stay higher longer usually
SirCrest 6 months ago
Pay an extra $100 over a regular 580 for an extra 1.5gb of RAM and a BROWN PCB!
TheExprima 6 months ago
@TheExprima Better cooler more power phases and for a card that can easily hit over 1ghz on the core with decent temps (even in sli) i think it really worth the money...
StingerBK 6 months ago
Hello SirCrest, i some questions about this card aswell i hope you can answer as i am days from buying it for my new pc setup. 1) How long is the card from the actual metal attach plate to the end? 2) The 40-50FPS you got on BF3 alpha testing was that on normal clock mhz? 3) Is the Afterburner software required to be installed for this card to run? - Steele from Denmark
Steele11000 6 months ago
@Steele11000 These cards at "stock" are 832mhz, which is conservative for these binned chips. I could hit 1ghz on each probably. As far as the length I don't understand. The entire length of the card? Or just the shroud? or just the PCB? Afterburner is MSI's overclocking and diagnostic software. These cards can run without it, the software is just nice to have. I recommend people use it because it's very useful.
SirCrest 6 months ago
@SirCrest Ah cheers okay thats good to know. No i mean what the total length of the card is without measuring the actual display connection ports (DVI connectors) You see im trying to find a case which this card will fit, and so far many threads on the forums has implicated that the card in fact is shorter than the retail listed length of 305mm (30.5cm) Im sorry for my bad english, hope you can help though.
Steele11000 6 months ago
@Steele11000 Tonight I will take the card out and take some measurements for you :D
SirCrest 6 months ago
@Steele11000 Sorry for the delay, I took out the cards and measured. From the backplate but not the ports to the PCB it's 11inches, if to the shroud its less than 11 and 3/4th inches. These cards are actually smaller than the 6970 lightnings. I think that's 29.84cm.
SirCrest 6 months ago
@SirCrest Very nice, as my speculations was right, the card was a bit shorter than the listed official listed measurement. Thank you very much for going through this much effort and i am glad to say that your review has gotten yet another owner of this magnifident graphic card. Best gamer regards from Denmark.
Steele11000 6 months ago
Theyve should clocked this card standard on 1GHZ!!!!! only at 1ghz it makes sense to have this card :P
Arnoud1987000 6 months ago
@Arnoud1987000 I've yet to push these cards to be honest. 1Ghz is doable on these, but not guaranteed. The price would rise dramatically I'd guess since you'd have to bin these chips more strictly.

lightning vs lightning xtreme:
check up benchmarks for metro 2033! lightning is in all points better than lightning xtreme.you must go to the site "techpowerup"
MrElcorado 6 months ago
@MrElcorado I've read that review, and they don't put the Lightning against the XE. Also, the regular lightning does win, on sub 1080p resolutions, but only by about half an FPS on average, which is statistically insignificant. The 3GB modules have a miniscule bit more latency which hurts it slightly on lower resolutions.
SirCrest 6 months ago
@SirCrest I have one question:
Can someone tell me how the fans turn to the colour wthite from the colour blue? Are there any chemicals in the fans? Is this not bad for the health when you think that there comes hot air through the fans and goes into the room where the pc is. Thank you!
MrElcorado 6 months ago

Thanks for the great upload btw.
venomx723272 6 months ago
@venomx723272 With a single card it ran the BF3 Alpha at 40-50fps on highest, with both in SLI it ran it at 70-80fps on highest. Never dipping below 60.
SirCrest 6 months ago
@SirCrest thanks for the fast reply! Cool, thanks for that info. Btw may I ask when you ran SLI with these 2 cards which PSU did you use? Any issues?

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
SelryamZephine 6 months ago
@SelryamZephine Like Kypton said, you can run one of these on that PSU, but to be completely straight with you, there is no point in buying a single card of these. One doesn't have the kind of power needed to run the effects that needs 3GB. if you're going SLI, go 3GB, if not, go with a normal Lightning.

It says its peak is max 960 w.

sultankraver 7 months ago
@jowowlol You need at least an 850W power supply, but 900+ would be a lot safer. sultankraver doesn't know what he's talking about.

Attention all Canadians looking to get this card! Newegg Canada just launched a sale for these cards for $579.99 with no shipping cost! Just a heads up, seeing as they have had such limited availability their whole lifetime.
IIIKryptonIII 7 months ago
Does this card feature rear exhaust? Or does a lot of the hot air escape through the front/sides?
IIIKryptonIII 7 months ago
@IIIKryptonIII It has exhaust ports, but I can tell you that nearly all of it comes out into the case. Mostly out the top of the card/side with the heatpipes, the rest comes out the back of the card near the power connections, and a little bit goes out side the case.
SirCrest 7 months ago
@SirCrest Damn, what a quick reply. Talk about subscriber loyalty! Anyway, it's unfortunate that its not 100% rear exhaust like the EVGA cards (minus the DS version), but that shouldn't matter too much seeing as the Twin Frozr III keeps it pretty cool in the first place, right?
IIIKryptonIII 7 months ago
@IIIKryptonIII Highest EVER temps were 68c on the top card 65c on the bottom card, both at 57% fanspeed while running GTA4 maxed with ENB series and dpeasant settings at 3840x2160. I rarely ever hear them and it's only when I pause the game and sit with no sound.
I haf a Haf 932 and the 230mm fan helps move most of the air through my case with no issue. I wouldn't use this card without a HAF or a Raven style case I think, Otherwise you lose the sound profile of these cards.
SirCrest 7 months ago
ugh I hate the blue led's that are incorporated in the GPU the inside of the case is all red and suddenly theres this blue color that lights up and ruins everything. The blue and red mix together and make the inside look purple... i wish there was an off switch on the color it ruins my setup. if the case had been blue it would have been awesome but with red.... its ugly.
94xxxBehemothxxx94 7 months ago
@94xxxBehemothxxx94 Yea, the Blue LED's were unexpected.

BattlefieldSF 8 months ago
@BattlefieldSF Since when?
SirCrest 8 months ago
I'm actually looking at getting two of these for a custom build, they look like great cards but the one thing that almost anyone will tell you sucks is the attached price tag. However, if you want preformance you need to pay for it.
That said... I'd still like to see these a bit cheaper but the current price tag wont hold me back.

SirCrest 8 months ago
@SirCrest well i wanted the 3 GB at first but i think the 1.5 GB version is sufficient. do u have any recommendations?
kulpreetg 8 months ago
@kulpreetg Asus ROG 580 Platinum came out and it's quite nice. Or the normal 580 Lightning would be good.
SirCrest 8 months ago
@SirCrest thank you very much. i didn't even know the matrix came out. which one is better for overclocking? and do you know if two of the asus cards will fit in an ASUS P8Z68-V PRO motherboard
kulpreetg 8 months ago
@kulpreetg The Asus cards are triple slot, You can simply look at the board on newegg to find out. If two slots are between the PCIe 16x slots then it will work, but the fans might choke for air. My board can support triple slot cards, but my dual slot 580's get plenty of air. They load at about 67c after like an hour of play.
SirCrest 8 months ago
@SirCrest alright, thanks for the help man. Your videos are great, keep it up.
