how often does that happen anyway...that people die from the steel sticking out? ...like never....you must be from from that highly OSH regulated place called New Zealand. Or you are a tight-ass building inspector.
A married couple tries to build a rammed earth house in colorado. They put too much water in the mix and it wouldn't cure. The couple gave up and went back to the city until their next vacation a year later. The wall was still standing. The man tried to push it down. He couldn't. They learned from their mistake and finished building their rammed earth house.
No color added to mix. Dry wall plaster and paint on inside to give the smooth modeled appearance. Mix was not amended with sand. Jar Test was difficult to read. Soil was so stained by red clay. Clay/Sand ratio was a bit more than 30/70. Mixed soil with portland cement at ratio of 10soil:1cement.
Did not use well-defined expansion joints Cracks not very pronounced. I like to say walls are seismic. As walls cool I hear a very faint low frequency popping noise every now and again.
You should use hydrated lime, not cement due to its better porosity and flexibility! I've heard that whitewashing walls 3 or 4 times before applying lime plaster gives good results.
i love the idea of building a rammed earth home.. the designs in the walls are really nice too. did you color your earth/cement? what mix are you using?
I always wondered...How "environmental" is Cement? Some people tell you not to use too much of it because of all the manufacturing and transportation it has involved with it to get it where it needs to go, wasting more energy...what do you do if your wantinf to avoid this?
I've used hydrated lime on test blocks with success.
I made a small test wall with no cement once that held up for 6 months or so with very little protection. I destroyed it because it was in the way... from my experience I am convinced that no cement would be fine with the correct sand/clay mix and a very good roof.
As a last note, real rammed earth is just what it is with no additives.
If I was there when you faked that fall, I would have beaten you up when you got down for scaring me.

Vertical rebars can impale and kill you unless they are safety-capped.

I'm too clastrophobic, I would need a window in that house. Where are the windows?

Understood. It's really not to bad. The room is not huge and the door has a nice window so this gives a nice view outside.

A glass roof might work?

what insulation have you used? nice texture. How much rebar? Cheers really nicely done

Walls have no insulation. Just uses thermal mass to take average day/night temp.
Attic has 6 inches of fiberglass insulation

Cement is not environmentally friendly.
To be honest, I'm just too chicken not to use it.
