I think I will definitely invest on learning how to sew, seeing that it will probably save a lot of money for me in the long run :) Especially when me and the hubby have a baby!
Clear verbal instructions, clear video, and I love being shown the final product, it's surprising how many people don't show the end result of what they're trying to get us to do (what we're aiming for, lol) Your instructions are great, your personality is delightful! This review from someone who doesn't have kids, I'm just a broad spectrum video reviewer. :D I agree with others about selling your diapers.
I have a silly question, what do you use for wipes when using cloth diapers, with disposables you throw the wipes in the diaper and wrap it all in one, do you use regular disposable wipes, or re-usable ones also?
I have a silly question, what do you use for wipes when using cloth diapers, with disposables you throw the wipes in the diaper and wrap it all in one, do you use regular disposable wipes, or re-usable ones also?
@vdawn1983 you may use whichever u want to use.. a lot of cloth diaperers use cloth wipes too after u shake the diaper out u can just wad the wipes into the diaper liek a sposie i guess or just toss them in the pail...
Thanks for the video and the link. I made my first one which isn't exactly "great" but I think that has more to do with my sewing skills. :) I have a very chunky 19 month old and my dummy diaper fit him perfectly. :)
Thanks for the video - I've been cd'ing for almost 2 years and will never go back to disposables!!! Thought about making my own for some time now, and this looks too easy to not try. I will probably use a PUL lining so I don't have to cover it, and add some closures with velcro (my daycare baby needs easy dipes).
What is the ecological impact of washing all those cloth diapers--when you take into account the hot water, bleach, detergent and clothes drying (assuming they aren't hung on a line)?
@schrenk - generally it is still a lower carbon impact. It takes a fair amount of water, but they should never be bleached bc the fabric loses absorbancy. Hot water, electricity to run the machines, they can be line dried (which will help with stains as well), and a small amount of detergent. Cotton fabrics take only about 30 years to biodegrade - so they will be gone in the baby's lifetime! The cost is MUCH lower than disposables, and contain none of the synthetic chemicals/materials.
Hi...what is your seam allowance you're using in the video, and, what is the length of the elastic? Thanks, great video! And to the two whining down below? You both call yourselves mothers acting the way you are? Drop it.
@mommy2mimikay you are obviously rude!!, becuz your taking my comment to heart, this is a free country right, im entitled to my own opinion, you dont have to agree!!!!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!! I had just about given up on finding a pattern! I just have two quick questions...1) where did you find the faster that you used that poped out of your hand? and 2) ..(kind of silly) but how did you put the pattern together to be one piece after you printed this out? I have no clue how to sew so I am enlisting my 12 year old to do most of it for me.....
I've been making my own diapers, with the ideas HarperCait has given me! I fill the fitted diapers with a cloth prefold (Gerber Brand), pin them (took me a while to get it just right... Luckily I was the only one getting stuck), and covering them with the plastic pants. I <3 it! It takes me about 20 minutes to make a diaper. They are super cute, and awesome for the environment. After my lovies get potty-trained, I plan on passing on all my supplies to a friend.
@juliett777 I have a cheaper machine that I was frustrated with but I have learned to change my needle with each project, oil it every once in a while and watch the bobbin tension. Your booklet should tell you about the oiling and the tension. Happy sewing!
@Imwhitegermanmexican actually I have had 4 children and they are right on the money! I am planning to cloth this next one. I have spent les sthen $100 for all my supplies including wipes, all types of prefolds, covers, AIO's. I had three is diapers a t atime the last round of kids and I wish I would of know about all this before!
Thanks for sharing this! I need to update my cloth diaper stash but dreaded having to buy more diapers- I've been thinking about making my own. I'm new to sewing, but this video made me see how easily it can be done- thanks so much!
OMG, thank you so much for making this video! I'm expecting, and I imagine that by the time that this baby is born he/she is going to have such a huge selection of diapers! This is going to be an awesome way to spend my time while I wait for him/her to be born...
I haven't read all of the comments, so someone might have mentioned this already, but I prefer to tack the elastic down on either end rather than sewing the whole thing. It tends to make it last a bit longer.
hi! thank you so much for posting this! I've been looking up different designs for cloth diapers and yours is really easy to follow! I'm definitely gonna try it out
wish I had a sewing machine. My fingers hurt from doing it by hand:( And im out of diapers. so i have to do this. If I had a sewing machine, I could have made 10 of them by now.
Can you explain more on what a waterproof cover is? How come in the video you didn't add one to your diaper? Or, was your floral pattern the waterproof cover (the flannel)? Please explain. Thanks for the video!
Yes- however, you will have to pin the diaper closed on the wings (snappy will not work) and the pins will cause holes in the PUL... some people have modified the diaper to have PUL outer everywhere except on the wings, thus keeping the winds pinnable.
It's also supposedly quite moisture resistant when made with a fleece outer, as opposed to flannel. Not bombproof however.
@HarperCait I used flannel and a pul layer between which did not work. The flannel got the other side of the flannel wet even with a waterproof layer between. Nylon jacket lining is also more breathable than pul, and its always super cheap at the fabric stores usually in the bargain area. :)
Thanks so much! I had just printed the pattern of Rita's website, and the directions were so confusing. Watching it makes it SO simple! I guess I'm really a visual learner!
I'm extremely new to sewing and I have a question. When I made my diapers, I didn't stitch all the way around before doing the elastic. I stitched around til I got to that point and just added the elastic, cut it at the end point, and continued sewing all the way around. Does that make a difference?
Also, do you HAVE do a top stitch all the way around once you're done with the "wrong side"? I'm new to this and didn't know if there was a special reason for it.
You want to top stitch becuase 1. It looks MUCH nicer, 2. It will keep the diaper from trying to turn itself inside out, and 3. The diaper will last longer because if you don't top stitch, the seam allowance will fray and you'll end up with holes.
I wish I had seen this earlier!!! I never thought about making them myself and always shied back of the huge price the cloth diapers cost n store. your´s look so great!!!
Well, my kids are 7, 5 and the twins are two, so it´s too late for us, but I´ll show this to all pregnant women that will cross my way :-)
i eyeballed the size of your pattern by the size of your hands. i'm a mommy to be and got laid off of work. so i invested in myself since i had the time. i made almost 30 diapers for a lil over $60
That was so helpful! I've been reading instructions for hours and until I actually *seen* it, it just didn't click! I think I'll have my first go at making one tomorrow lol!
This was a wonderful tutorial! I really appreciated the extra details and the great statistics.
I have successfully made a couple diapers using your video (and the Rita Rump Pocket) and you really made sewing a cloth diaper very easy (especially for a visual learner like me.)
i saw this one girl in threadbanger that sewed fabric pads:)i think i should try that cause i won't be having a kid for atleast the next 10 years:D but maby i'll have a baby brother soon(i'll go crazy if it will be sister so i hope i'll have a baby bro)
Well, that is a tough one. The crux of the matter in my opinion is that big and small are relative terms:
I don't know you of course, but I would hazard a guess that compared to, lets say, a starving child in africa or a newt, you do in fact have a big rear end. Compared to a rhinocerous or a sumo wrestler however, you are most assuredly quite petite.
But perhaps most importantly: How do you stack up compared to Joni? This is a question only you or Joni can answer.
This is great! I have been sewing diapers for a while but this is so much easier. I wanted to share that I made might out of an old t-shirt and used the bottom hem as my opening. It made it even faster and easier plus since I got old t's for free my cost is next to nothing!
I just attempted my first cloth nappy as per your instructions and those of the website you attached. I have made a video of it (and put it as a video response to this video), although it was a failed attempt I will keep trying. I have never sewn anything before and am very proud of myself.
awesome!!! thankyou so much for putting this up, I have been wondering how to make them, as I have brought quite a few and they cost alot ( not as much as disposables but more than making them yourself ) fantastic I am so glad I looked and found your video. I will be saving it and using it to help me for future referance.
I am making these nappies at the moment with your video help. Would like to know what measurements you would use to make an insert for the nappy pocket and what materials you use. Thanks for your wonderful help.
I love the facts that you put in with your video. To me, using cloth is a "no duh!" type situation, but I've actually heard people ask "Why use cloth when we have modern easier things available?" It's shocking, but I guess not everyone thinks of the impact! I'm going to be a first time mom and I love making my own things. I'm going to start stockpiling these today! In fact, I'm going to the fabric store this instant.
You ROCK. Gandhi said you have to be the change you wish to see in the world. That's exactly what YOU have done by taking your time to video this and post on YouTube. Thanks to the camera person, too!!
Done all in flannel like this it needs a cover such as a Bummi's superwhisperwrap/Thirsties.
Otherwise you can use wool- interlock or knitted, or covers made from fleece. THe lady who made this pattern sews Mile High Monkeys fleece covers for them and also now has her own covers pattern at her own site.
You could also just make the outer layer out of fleece instead and it will be largely leakproof. Not good for long car rides or if you're gonna let baby sit in it for a long time, but good.

THANKS A BUNCH!

I love those diapers, I don´t even have a baby but I SO want to make them, my only concern is how do you wash them???
mariaaa26 3 years ago
Tip the poop out into your toilet, then chuck 'em in the washing machine and wash 'em like anything else!

where did you get the pattern that you used?
lorisean06 3 years ago
Well, that is a tough one. The crux of the matter in my opinion is that big and small are relative terms:
I don't know you of course, but I would hazard a guess that compared to, lets say, a starving child in africa or a newt, you do in fact have a big rear end. Compared to a rhinocerous or a sumo wrestler however, you are most assuredly quite petite.
But perhaps most importantly: How do you stack up compared to Joni? This is a question only you or Joni can answer.
We're here for you.

Excellent. I was shocked to find out the price of pre-made clothe diapers. These are great.

awesome!!! thankyou so much for putting this up, I have been wondering how to make them, as I have brought quite a few and they cost alot ( not as much as disposables but more than making them yourself ) fantastic I am so glad I looked and found your video. I will be saving it and using it to help me for future referance.

I am making these nappies at the moment with your video help. Would like to know what measurements you would use to make an insert for the nappy pocket and what materials you use. Thanks for your wonderful help.

Hi, LOVE this instruction....will you please tell me where you got that pattern from? You are an inspiration!

Bye! :D

I cant wait to make my own...what fabrics do you use to prevent leaks? Also do you have to use a cover with these and if so what kind??
littlelovebug15 3 years ago
Done all in flannel like this it needs a cover such as a Bummi's superwhisperwrap/Thirsties.
Otherwise you can use wool- interlock or knitted, or covers made from fleece. THe lady who made this pattern sews Mile High Monkeys fleece covers for them and also now has her own covers pattern at her own site.
You could also just make the outer layer out of fleece instead and it will be largely leakproof. Not good for long car rides or if you're gonna let baby sit in it for a long time, but good.
