  • whoa how good is the guy on that penny-whistle thing? he's bloomin' fantastic! i tried, its imposible to be that good.

  • Fantastic clip. Such an incredible band when they were all working together.

  • what a band

and it actually nice to see him anything other than openly wankered

  • I hope the two people in the world who gave this a thumbs down have their thumbs cut off in the near future.

  • Oh my God! He is sober!

  • does the berk doing these crap captions honest believe he's telling us something new ?

  • Great song about the car factory in England and about fighting a massive bloke called the elephant who kept fighting with a broken neck .

  • 0:38 hahaaa

  • this fucking fantastic

  • Why did you cut the end off?

  • lmfao 31 seconds in: "contrary to popular rumour, Shane MacGowan is not dead."

    hahahaha that was hilarious

he has sobered up and now he's with the Popes, or at leas he was the last time I checked.. anyways, he's great when he's sober.. great music though either way

  • finally got to see the pogues w/ shane in atlanta last year. they kicked ass.

  • I think that this is from the year 1984.

  • Great version, I love how it's actually a bit less rough than the album version without losing any of that great energy.

  • Spike, this is for you Our drinking song remember! Ya up in the wide blue yonder. More than likely still laughing!! Ralph, Dale, Fred and me miss ya, ya daft feck. xxx

  • the video description should mention that this video is quite old, not from 2008 (!).

  • god love ya shane ya bollocks .

  • this is the most sober & put together I've ever seen Shane. God I love him!

  • theres more to music than pop, listen and find out!

  • you are a moron

  • I don't know why, hmm i wonder. why don't you tell us with your caveman mentality?

  • a breathe of fresh air for Irish music .true genius

  • Don't cut the end off!

  • lol, 0:36 waving (y)

  • SHANE ISN'T DRUNK DURING THIS SONG! SHANE ISN'T DRUNK DURING THIS SONG! Amazing he is when he's sober. :D

  • @electrifymymind2: Isn't it a wonder to behold?! He even has it together enough to wave at someone off camera! Simply AMAZING! LOL.

  • @electrifymymind2 I know - he must feel AMAZING. you have to say though - the drunk voice had a good sound for the music - the " lets get drunk and have sex" side of folk music - a facet that has been sadly overlooked recently.

  • MULLET!

  • @Spizike237 the host, yes. No one in the band, luckily! ^^ Shane always has awesome hair!

  • SPIDEY!

  • I watched the story of Stiff last night on BBC4 as I missed it the last time and this song is a rollicking good foot-tapper diddly music is always like that. Shane looked most odd when interviewed and his laugh was like Mutley's without the snicker-still as I say bloody good song.

  • This is a great song, Shane shows you can be ugly and rough as shite and fucking great front man for a band. One of my hero's.

And what the fuck is this? A whole page of comments about where they're from, get over it.

  • Fuck Yeah Mate, Shane Is fucking awesome.

  • @tosgem He's amazing, hell yeah! But I can't see why anybody would call him ugly... his teeth may be crooked/gone, but that's nothing that can't be fixed. Besides that, Shane's a decent looking bloke IMO.

  • shane was born in Kent while his parents were over from Ireland visiting relatives. Then went home afterwards. They moved to England themselves when he was 5-6.

  • As far as I'm concerned Cait was born somewhere in Africa, but could be wrong, don't know for sure. But yeah she's got Irish roots and in those early Pogues vids from 84 or 85 she looks fucking hot! :-D Phil Chevron is actually Irish, too, but I don't know whether he was born there or not. Remember his band Radiators from Space? One of Irlands first Punk bands. Andrew Ranken has got Irish roots as well.

  • I'm getting really fucked up because of these stupid fuckers discussing where Shane MacGowan was born and stuff...Mates: He was born in KENT in ENGLAND and moved to TIPPERARY in IRELAND. And then when he was something between six or seven years old he moved to LONDON in ENGLAND. That are the facts, mates. There is a documentary about Shane MacGowan called "The Great Hunger" from 1997 where they say he was born in Tipperary - but it's WRONG! Cheers!

  • As far as Im aware they are all English with roots, am not a expert but I think the only Irish member was Cait O'Riordan (Costellos ex).

Am more interested in the music than where they hail from

  • who said there english ? irish to the core

  • the bands originally from Croydon in London but Irish roots and thats what makes them so good

  • They formed wen they were all living in London is what I mean

  • Not from Croydon at all, they centred on the Kings Cross area but they all came from all over the place, James Fearnley from Cheshire, for example. Something so great could not come from CROYDON!

  • lol yeah guess so i jus saw summet that said they were from around croydon so ...

  • who cares if they are english or irish the fact of the matter is we think they are amazing thats all that counts

  • the band is IRISH dumbo

  • That guy must be some sort a prick 2 think that The Pogues come from London haahaahaha What a fucking toss pot !!!

  • Yeah dude. The band is Irish by heritage, but didn't start until quite a while after Shane McGowan moved to London and started the Nipple Erectors.

  • wrong most of the members were english and they formed in London-do your homework please

  • James fearnley, Spider Stacy,Andrew Ranken, Jem Finer, Daryl Hunt all english born and bred. Shane Mcgowan was born in Kent. I rest my case.

  • Actually Shane MacGowan was born in Tipperary.

  • wrong he was born in Kent and moved to tipperary as a child

  • Comment removed

  • 2008??

  • the greatest LONDON band of all time !

  • Are you trying to make a point about the pogues not being irish? I think the pogues detachment from Ireland is as important almost to their sound as the irish influence. Theirs something uniquely london-irish about the pogues that makes them brilliant. But all the same, you can't say their not an irish band. There definately an Irish band before there an English band.

  • Yeah I was just making a point about being London Irish as a lot of people dont really appreciate the fact that the Pogues could only have existed in London.

But yeah totally agree they are of irish decent but you know when they came out at first a lot of Ireland hated them and thought they were an embarassment ! and now quite righty do Shane and the Pogues are a National Treasure....

Wanna hear about when i met him.. No sorry , cheers for the reply .

  • Yeah, that sounds like a good enough story.

  • Shane MACGowan was born in Ireland and left with his parents to London where of course he grew up with the London Punk scene, but he loved the history and the skill of Irish Traditional music but he never felt he was as good as the Traditional singers, so, he invented 'Punk Irish' which was a huge hit. And Shane, your love of Irish calm and music is evident in every song you sing(except for Fiesta!!) xxx Go Néirí an mBóthar leat a Bhucaill! Love ya - brilliant man you are

  • i saw em down in deepellum in dallas sat nite late

  • Yep. He's alive. Saw him in D.C. Wed. It took them a while to find their grove and there were a couple of times I'd thought we'd lost Shane for good but once they found their grove....

It was the old Pogues all right.

  • savage!!! he is fair sober there i think!!!

  • love it. my mum used to sing it to me when i was a baba

  • this song is brilliant live

went to see em last nyt

    god bless em all

  • not too bad, but i'm bored.

  • this song makes me happy

  • far away!!!!

  • i believe the instrument is called a fife.

  • Isn´t it a penny whistle?

  • aye tis

  • penny whistle

  • Shane is genius

  • What's the name of the guy and the instrument he is playing to Shane's left?

  • that d be Spider Stacy on his tin whistle, he plays a mean beer tray tho, check out the pogues in concert on here

  • Thanks!

  • surprising sober lookin in this video

  • It sounds like someone stuffed cotton in his mouth when he talks plus he sounds drunk

  • that comment shows you made a wrong turn......eh Celine Dion's down the street and around the corner

  • Amazing :)

  • fucking genius and legend
