Seen them live twice, great nights, booze flying all over the place and Shane swigging from bottle of wine held in the same hand as the mic inbetween verses... happy days at B'ham hippodrome!
lmfao 31 seconds in: "contrary to popular rumour, Shane MacGowan is not dead."
hahahaha that was hilarious
he has sobered up and now he's with the Popes, or at leas he was the last time I checked.. anyways, he's great when he's sober.. great music though either way
Spike, this is for you Our drinking song remember! Ya up in the wide blue yonder. More than likely still laughing!! Ralph, Dale, Fred and me miss ya, ya daft feck. xxx
@electrifymymind2 I know - he must feel AMAZING. you have to say though - the drunk voice had a good sound for the music - the " lets get drunk and have sex" side of folk music - a facet that has been sadly overlooked recently.
I watched the story of Stiff last night on BBC4 as I missed it the last time and this song is a rollicking good foot-tapper diddly music is always like that. Shane looked most odd when interviewed and his laugh was like Mutley's without the snicker-still as I say bloody good song.
@tosgem He's amazing, hell yeah! But I can't see why anybody would call him ugly... his teeth may be crooked/gone, but that's nothing that can't be fixed. Besides that, Shane's a decent looking bloke IMO.
shane was born in Kent while his parents were over from Ireland visiting relatives. Then went home afterwards. They moved to England themselves when he was 5-6.
As far as I'm concerned Cait was born somewhere in Africa, but could be wrong, don't know for sure. But yeah she's got Irish roots and in those early Pogues vids from 84 or 85 she looks fucking hot! :-D Phil Chevron is actually Irish, too, but I don't know whether he was born there or not. Remember his band Radiators from Space? One of Irlands first Punk bands. Andrew Ranken has got Irish roots as well.
I'm getting really fucked up because of these stupid fuckers discussing where Shane MacGowan was born and stuff...Mates: He was born in KENT in ENGLAND and moved to TIPPERARY in IRELAND. And then when he was something between six or seven years old he moved to LONDON in ENGLAND. That are the facts, mates. There is a documentary about Shane MacGowan called "The Great Hunger" from 1997 where they say he was born in Tipperary - but it's WRONG! Cheers!
Not from Croydon at all, they centred on the Kings Cross area but they all came from all over the place, James Fearnley from Cheshire, for example. Something so great could not come from CROYDON!
Are you trying to make a point about the pogues not being irish? I think the pogues detachment from Ireland is as important almost to their sound as the irish influence. Theirs something uniquely london-irish about the pogues that makes them brilliant. But all the same, you can't say their not an irish band. There definately an Irish band before there an English band.
Yeah I was just making a point about being London Irish as a lot of people dont really appreciate the fact that the Pogues could only have existed in London.
But yeah totally agree they are of irish decent but you know when they came out at first a lot of Ireland hated them and thought they were an embarassment ! and now quite righty do Shane and the Pogues are a National Treasure....
Wanna hear about when i met him.. No sorry , cheers for the reply .
Shane MACGowan was born in Ireland and left with his parents to London where of course he grew up with the London Punk scene, but he loved the history and the skill of Irish Traditional music but he never felt he was as good as the Traditional singers, so, he invented 'Punk Irish' which was a huge hit. And Shane, your love of Irish calm and music is evident in every song you sing(except for Fiesta!!) xxx Go Néirí an mBóthar leat a Bhucaill! Love ya - brilliant man you are
Yep. He's alive. Saw him in D.C. Wed. It took them a while to find their grove and there were a couple of times I'd thought we'd lost Shane for good but once they found their grove....
LOL I can actually hear the lyrics clearly here. Great vid :D!
