Great track. I don't think I ever heard this one. I hope to be doing some business with Harry once the Abraham Wilson double CD is completed in a month or two. I'm taking it to Motown to see if something can be worked out. I'll discuss Rare Earth and others with him at this time.
Glad you like the cut, James Brown told Cashbox or Record World that Earnest Jackson's version should be a hit, (which it was in Baton Rouge), Then Rare Earth cut it and split up in 1974 right before the release. The song still has the groove and with the right artist could climb high in the charts today.
"Chained" was originally a 45 single on Motown (Rare Earth 5057); "Fun House" stayed in the can till 1995 when both tunes were released in the "Rare Earth" double CD anthology on Motown.
"Chained" also appeard in an extended version in a further (1998) Rare Earth anthology---this has 30 seconds or so (possibly for the planned 1974 LP) that never before were heard till then..
1 of the YouTube contributiors is a Veteran Producer & Recording Engineer at Motown, his name is Russ Terrana & he & his brother Ralph are pals with Pete,Ray & the other fellas of Rare Earth. They are known as Terashirma here on YouTube.
I sent this to 'em & asked if THEY could ask Motown VP Harry Weinger if HE could find it in his heart to have this out as a future compilation offering.
By the same token, might you see about giving US "Chained" & "Funhouse", m8?
I don't know of those songs, "Chained and Funhouse" I suppose because I was only concerned with my cut. It almost made me a lot of money. I just knew it would go up the charts. Oh well! That's life. Wouldn't it be weird if it did get released and finally made me a good chunk of change?
Yes, you are exactly right. Produced by Frank Wilson. This song was a pick single. I doubt if it will ever be released, even though I wish it would be. I wrote the song about my friend Jimi Hendrix in about 1972, and the first recorded version was by Earnest Jackson from Baton Rouge. I appreciate your comment and your knowledge of the music.
Aw yeah, put a smile on my face :)

This song sounds like WAR (the Band). Listening to the harp&sax melody as well as to the funky sound I think for a moment WAR is playing,,, Awesome!

New to me, I've read that this was maybe a part of the aborted Frank Wilson sessions of 1974.
Not yet released on any Motown compilation yet, right?
Mebbe Motown VP Harry Weinger *will* see to it that this sees release this Yuletide season?
Thanx fer this, m8..
