Valid question, my mother asks me the same thing and I do the carrot-underscore-carrot face at her.

It's a rejuvenation of the series, not a remake. It's the old crew on the old ship, but it's a way for the writers of any future movies to keep from being boxed in by the canon of the original show. Destroying Vulcan and killing Kirk's dad are ways for the writers to reexplore the Federation galaxy. Vulcan was hugly important, so now the Enterprise and her crew need to find an alternative :3
