Is that a Gibson Black Beauty you're playing? :D! I'm in love with that guitar... I've wanted one ever since I saw it. Beautiful guitar, I almost had a heart attack when a guy let me play one at a store I went to. I envy your guitars, and your talent, sir. :P Very nice video.
Good eye, sir. "The SG" was born in 1979. For a better look at it, watch my "Vital Signs. Time Machine Style" video. It's not a good example of it's sound, but you can see that it is exactly what you thought it was. I love that guitar.
hahah i love it! this is one of the best songs in the world u played it great love how u have animal as the drummer just great.. this vid made my day thank you for all your work :)
Marvelous job, superb song and tone but quick question:
Are you using a SansAmp Bass Driver on that Ric because i have the same ric (if it's a 4003) or is it completely out of the bass that is giving that tone?
Thanks. Well... That bass is the 4001 with roundwound strings. I go through a cheezy little Zoom506 II and into a 50w Crate bass amp. I think the magic happens somewhere between microphone placement and the line-out on my Tascam 424 which plugs directly into the line-in on my computer. I don't hear that tone while I'm playing, only during play-back. It's very strange. Strange and very unscientific.
@AnubisXII --- don't knock the Zoom! (haha) I'm using an original '98 506 1st-gen with completely re-worked settings that I've had from... well... 1998. I can make my Fernandes Tremor punchy & chalky almost exactly like a Rick, or heavy & crushing like Peter Steele from the Slow Deep & Hard days. Out of all the pedals I've had over the past 13 years, that plastic piece of Zoom is still duplicating a LOT of bass tones.....by the way, love all your playing. How do your neighbors like it?
Hey, man. I mean cheesy, like... it tastes like cheese. Sorry bout the choice of words I used. I shoulda said "gooey" or "processed non-dairy goodness".
Yeah. I also have the 1st-gen that I bought at a pawn shop for ten bucks. It's a good little pedal, and right now I've got my Alesis QS6 running through it for some reason.
My neighbors are cool. They have crazy things that I ignore, so it works out pretty well. Just smile and wave and shut the eff up.
@AnubisXII Thanks for the response... it's almost, in a way, like when I was at a Rush show in '85 and Howard Ungerleider strolled in the bathroom at the Hampton Coliseum as I was standing there releiving myself at the urinal, and he had passes and bus keys hanging from his neck, and I said "hi," and he said, "hey," and then I was like, "holy shit, dude, you're Howard Ungerleider and you just said hi to me" but I didn't really say it. Or maybe it's not like that at all. But you FUC%ING ROCK!
In this video, theres a sign I pulled off of the production office door when I ended up backstage at the Counterparts show. A forklift driver told me to load the trucks, so I did. Shortly thereafter, one of Dallas' finest escorted me to the closest exit. I walked out to 2000 Rush fans pressed against the fence, waiting for Rush to leave. They cheered my arrival. But my girlfriend was still inside, so to re-enter, I told security I was Skip Gildersleeve. Stage Right Technician.
Oh... I ran my guitar through a Gallien Krueger 100 mpl which is now diseased. or in a coma. Hopefully it's condition is reversible. And the bass?... A Zoom 506 II plugged into a Crate BX50. Both miked while recording.
Blown away - well done, sir. I messed around with the bass part myself, and can't play it. You got bass and guitar and keys down. TIp my hat to you...
GOOD STUFF AnubisXII!! Must've taken AGES to get all of those tracks down, and edit it , and sync it, and burn it for YT, and, well... you know!! Thanks for the GOOD vid man! You are a real PRO!!
Better than Nelson? Dude. No one is better than, wait... did Nelson do that Do Wop song? Nevermind. Someone else did Do Wop. Crackhead Elmo?... BWAAAHAHAHAH! That's Animal. Elmos crackhead dad. Elmo is that little tickle doll with homosexual tendencies.
No sir. That is an old Gibson LP Custom. My baby. But I do have an old Ibanez Custom Agent I've been thinking about doing something with. It's the old tobacco burst LP with the scroll headstock and friggen crazy inlays down the neck and body. It's a beauty, though.
Wow, other than the great guitar solo and the great bass playing AND tone, I'm really impressed with the attention to detail with the drum programming...that must have taken days!
Thanks, man. Yeah. It took quite a while to program those drums. And I had to use the memory from two drum machines to do it. And I still ended up repeating some patterns towards the end of the song. AARRGGH!
Whats impressive here is AnubisXII playing finger style bass guitar and an electric Les Paul with a pick(as usual), but how many people can do that? Not to many! He and i are among the few! Kudos to you AnubisXII! Happy New Year!
Me trying not to be tense is like someone trying to act laid-back while they're on fire.
I took a long break from playing for a while and ended up forcing myself to do these videos so I would start playing again. Well... It got me playing again, but it's just not the same as it once was.
And really... Before you can "feel" the music, you gotta "feel" like playing it.
I totally get what you're saying and I appreciate the kind words. And hopefully one day I'll find that old groove.
Ye if i were you i would learn a finger tehnique called the walking pitch squeal you use your index finger to push your pinky through the strings. It gives you an amazing sound and hendrix even used it.
Yes. The off-beat parts were carefully planned and precisely executed along with all those little parts that would sound somewhat like mistakes of eff-ups to the untrained ear or inexperienced casual observer. And anyone who knows me could verify the fact that this reply to your comment is full of crap. There are some parts where I just couldn't keep up.
And this was my first recording ever without my little buddy Bob (the cat) here with me.
17 years ago I knew this guy who couldn't stop talking about his Alembic bass. At the time, I've never heard of them. But this guy seemed to be a little too in love with his bass. You might even say it was a very unhealthy love that became a bit too weird and uncomfortable to hear about.
Finally, I got to meet this beautiful Alembic bass.
It was then, my friend, everything came to light.
This whole time I thought he was saying "Olympic".
Ahh yesss. The Gibson Les Paul Custom, aka "The Black Beauty". With gold plated hardware, mother of pearl inlay, and the ivory trim framing it all perfectly.
Unfortunately, over time, the finish Gibson used begins to yellow. Much like an old newspaper.
So, you take the yellow ivory, and combine it with really bad lighting and a cheesy camcorder, and... Badda-bing.

Playing GTR myself for 30 yrs. I remember jamming on this tune and other Rush tunes with our 3 piece band. Our bassist eventually went to MIT and jammed with Billy Sheehan many times. He then had a short stint with Slik Toxik here in Canada before it went all to hell. Anyhow, that's my claim to fame and thanks for the kind response...so refreshing to to speak with someone who reminds me of myself...grounded but having fun if you know what I mean...take care and keep rockin' too!

I recomend redoing the drums with the drumkit from hell. The quality of the drum sound would be a million times better. Other then that, very impressive!
I would like to jam with you man. That is some kick ass playing. You play the same stuff I do. 70's rock rules. That is some of the best rush covers I've ever heard. I love seeing people jam on the good stuff. FANTASTIC!!!!!
The drums are the Kawai R-50 and R-50e. A couple drum machines from yesteryear. They really have a better sound, but the sound gets lost in the compression or whatever it takes to get it below 100 mb.

Yes. Yes that is a Black Beauty. Or some may refer to it as The Fretless Wonder. Or, as I like to call it... Mine.
This Gibson Les Paul Custom and I celebrated our 25th year together December of 2010, and it is still as perfect as it was 25 years ago.
You should get one. And NEVER get rid of it.

The muppet part made me laugh too

I recomend redoing the drums with the drumkit from hell. The quality of the drum sound would be a million times better. Other then that, very impressive!

I would like to jam with you man. That is some kick ass playing. You play the same stuff I do. 70's rock rules. That is some of the best rush covers I've ever heard. I love seeing people jam on the good stuff. FANTASTIC!!!!!

Is the drums from reason? :P
Sounds like them from 2.5 ;)
B3nz1mon 4 years ago
B3nz1mon:
The drums are the Kawai R-50 and R-50e. A couple drum machines from yesteryear. They really have a better sound, but the sound gets lost in the compression or whatever it takes to get it below 100 mb.
Thanks for the comment.

Okay! :P
That explains everything ;)

Why, yes. Yes it is.
Actually, that was the sign they had taped to the "Production Office" door when they played Reunion Arena in '94.
Wow. That rhymed.
Yeah. When I was back there, I kinda grabbed it.
Then I kindly got escorted out.

isn't "la villa strangiato" an exercise in self-indulgence? not yyz?
edthehead83 4 years ago
edthehead83:
Yeah, man. You're right.
But at the time I posted this, I hadn't done La Villa yet. So this, to me, was my excersize in self indulgence.
I forgot that I posted that. I guess I need to change it. Hmm... Maybe I'll change it to "A Song About a Cheeto" or, "Hoppy. The One-Legged Duck".
Hey man, thanks for the comment (and for reminding me).
AnubisXII 4 years ago
yea lol. no problem man. always nice to talk to another rush fan.
