I dont know why but I cried. Is hard to find someone can talks about Callas like a normal person, so we know who she really was. Callas always said that ppl exaggerated everything she did. And Montserrat just proved that it is true. She was amazing, but above all she was a human being
Vissi D'Arte is such an aria. It speaks to everyone. Yes, Tosca is complaining in it, but not in an irritating fashion. It is heartbreakingly honest and pure.
Caballe's rendering is flawless. The grace, poise and breath control are all exemplary. My fave Sutherland also recorded it, even if she is not associated with Puccini, and it too is glorious. Her golden honeyed voice is made for this aria. But Callas... my God, her Tosca is so heartpiercing, so human and powerful, that....
... it kills something in me every time I hear it. You feel her pain, you think about her angst and protest, you hear her sadness. It is beyond comprehension. It is almost the aria she sang which was about her life.
Her high note at the end is filled with emotion, simply unmatched.
Vissi D'Arte, luckily, is performed by many of the greats. Actually, by almost everyone and how great is that! Everyone brings in something new and enthralling to it.

A Caballe no le hace falta interpretar con el cuerpo; Le sobra con la voz

Great Post. I saw her at the MET with Pavarotti in Tosca. They were like two grown kids in a playground throwing snowballs at each other!
