Yes, Sega really released a Sonic the Hedgehog game that plays music identical to Mario and features identical Sprites, levels, and HUD elements are Mario. They didn't care that Mario was Sonic's biggest competitor. They just wanted to release a game IDENTICAL to Mario from the ground-up, just with a Sonic sprite in place of Mario himself.
