I finally found it! This is one of my best and earliest memories of Sesame Street. The song is so darn catchy. Okay it does not make sense that a little girl (unaccompanied by an adult) would talk her llama to the dentist but so what?
I am from South America and moved to US 6 years ago, to my surprise I went to a parade and I saw a bunch of Llamas, y was like "What in the world??" then I found out that there are thousands of Llama farms all over the place, Anybody can tell me when Llamas started to populate in US?
Pause at 2:34...Jesus, that' is one set of ugly teeth! Did she get punched from some kid or suffer a kick to the mouth from her pet llama? Also, about her haircut - if it weren't for the girl narrating & talking to the dentist, I wouldn't have been able tell if she was a girl or boy.
I was singin this song to my husband and I thought I was going crazy cause I had no idea why I knew this song or where I had heard it. I thought it was another of my mom's songs that she made up when my brothers and I were kids but I googled it and I had to have been like 4 last time I heard it. that was 20 years go...wow...seseme street knows what they're doing!
it's actually extremely common. even though the apartments are pretty small, i lived there for years, and i can assure you, tons of people have llamas as pets there.
me too.. i'm 26 years old and of all the old school sesame street songs i remember this one the most and i cant even tell you why lol i guess because like the video info said... i wondered who in the world would own a LLAMA in the city and why the girl didnt have a grown up with her! Llamas can be pretty moody and she isnt exactly what one would consider strong lol
David Lynch made a horrible joke about this during an episode of Twin Peaks. Anyway, that's the way I interpreted the whole "Lydecker" affair, aside from the joke about the Gene Tierney flick.
LMAO, for some reason I got this song in my head today (happens every few years) so I decided to check Youtube. Haha, amazing how much of the song I remember, since I haven't heard it since it came out on Sesame Street. :P
Okay, I have been looking for this video forever!!!!!!! I can't believe I found it when I wasn't even looking for it!!! I told my mom about this recently and she thought I was nuts! I can't wait to show her! So awesome!
Day..hey..hey...hey....this was my joint! da..da...da...da... I didn't even know what a Llama was...but I wanted one so I could take it to the dentist
This is clearly some outer borough shit, like those social maladroits that have trouble holding down a job but have a flock of 200 pigeons in cages on the roof.
This was one of my favourite Sesame Street clips as a child. Watching it again now that I'm older, the first thing that comes to mind is that the vet is lucky the llama didn't spit at him. It seems to be very well behaved!
i remember this song! i still think of it, whenever I someone mentions a llama. i saw mike rowe fix a llama's teeth on Dirty Jobs... LOL it was too perfect.
@ redheaven17 - me too!!! A Llama can't be mentioned without my brain reverting to this song. It's tripped out that some things from childhood just stick with you for the rest of your life.
Some guy in NYC had a tiger in his apartment and every few years some guy in some building is busted for having a mini farm with goats, sheep, chicken, etc... Completely plausible in pre-Bloomberg NYC.
I loved this video when I was a kid! All I kept thinking was, "What freakin' kid has a llama in New York City??!?! " (And "where the heck did they keep it?" )
i remember drawing a face on a helium filled balloon and walking around with it and calling it my llama. i always thought i was an insane child, but after watching this video it all makes sense! hahahaha.
It's perfectly ok for the girl to be without parental supervision because anyone walking a llama down the streets of Manhattan is going to attract enough attention & stares that no one is gonna mess with her.
I'm guessing this girl is perhaps from a farm or animal sanctuary in upstate New York. Of course, if that's the case, who knows how she got the llama down to Manhattan by herself...
Wow, I had this song stuck in my head all day and I finally found it! I also always sing this song and everyone thinks I'm crazy. It really seems like Sesame Street really touched us all. Amazing. It makes me sad my kids won't have such awesome stuff to watch on TV
Great childhood memory...however I aways thought the Llama was odd having two different colored eyes! And my other thought...where does one keep a Llama in the city??
This skit almost literally killed me as a child. The first time I saw it was in '79, when I was about 7. I loved the sketch so much that when WNET ran the rerun of the episode on Saturday morning, I nearly electorcuted myself plugging in the little 12" black & white set in my room (a spark flew out of the outlet). I jumped, my father walked by and yelled, "Vut deh hell ar you doink?" But I survived and got to watch the sketch again.
This song is one of my favorites. Bizarre, yet brilliant.
I love this song.. although now that I'm older I find it odd that she had a llama as a pet, not to mention in the city? How do rent an apartment with that sort of animal?
my sister and i used to sing this to my mom, changing the words to 'me and my mama' until she would go insane. good times. also, that is one bitchin' mullet that little girl is sporting! takes me back!
My funny little sister used to sing this tune when she was a toddler, only she'd sing "Me and my llama, we ate our pajamas!" and then laugh herself silly.
I'm so happy that this is on here. I knew that I wasn't imagining this segment. Not one of my friends remember seeing this. Pop Quiz. What is the name of the llama in the movie Napoleon Dynamite?
Well, the girl obviously isn't alone. There would be a cameraman and maybe a director there. But I guess the reason for portraying the girl as being alone is so that little kids can fantasize about having their own pet llama (I know I certainly did after watching this clip when I was a kid!). Showing an adult there would kind of spoil things for a kid's imagination. If you haven't noticed, there are a lot of kids movies and TV shows which portray kids in roles normally played by adults.
For some reason, this is one of those that I'll always remember from when I was a kid watching Sesame Street. I always liked this one ... it's special. Dunno why, but it sticks out in those early years.
I still get this song in my head from time to time. Something that stood out from my childhood,I guess. I've tried contacting CTW, PBS, and even TV Land with ideas of them doing a retro channel of PBS shows (from 1960's, 70's, 80's, and some 90's). PBS said they only hold program rights for 3 years and it was the local public stations' choice as to what they wanted to buy and air. Haven't heard anything from the others yet. Be nice if more people contacted these places. Might get things rolling.
prior to "the N," the nickelodeon-owned offshoot network 'noggin' used to show classic sesame streets over night. now that the N is its own separate network, noggin *should* be free to do this again... however at 4am, what are they playing, gullah gullah island(?)... sad. they should really go back to that classic overnight programming...
I sooo remember this. My parents taped several Sesame Street episodes from the time I was born in 1979 to I think the I was about 7 and they would have my sister and I watch them back to back. Because Sesame Street often used stock footage and because the episodes we watched were taped I can never pin point what year a skit is from. I wish my parents had kept those old tapes, because I now have a 10 month son and would prefer for him to watch the old Sesame Street.
I am so glad that this is on you tube! Every once in a while this song (at least the part about the llama going to the dentist today) gets stuck in my head for a day. I was hoping it would be on here to see how the rest of the song goes-too funny. Sesame Street classic.
Because taking the llama to the dentist is such an every day activity, one must write a song about it... Is the singer rejoicing that perhaps it's her pet that is having pointy objects shoved in her mouth as opposed to her?
I always thought the girl looked like a Nicki, but that's probably because she mentioned the llama's name as Nicki and I associated them together (seeing as I was four or five when this segment first aired)
The line about pajamas doesn't really make sense anyway, for several reasons (for instance, how do you "jump out of your pajamas"?) It would have been more logical to rhyme it with the word "mama" (i.e. "Me and my llama, I'm like her mama", or if the llama is indeed her legal guardian like some people have mentioned, "she's like my mama".) Then again, like some people have mentioned, this whole segment didn't really make sense, but it's a kid's show, so...
I believe the lyrics are actually "just out of our pajamas". In other words, they've gone to the vet first thing in the morning, right after they've woken up.
Still doesn't make sense, namely because llamas don't wear pajamas.
Besides Pajamas doesn't really rhyme with llama. Nope, something with Mama would have been more logical, but seeing as I don't watch Sesame Street anymore, I guess it doesn't really matter.
HAHAHA OH damn! I remeber this video and I still sing this song... well just the part that I could remember which was just "me and my llama" over and over again. hahaha ya it is kinda weird now watching it now as a grown up but it brought back memories. I still want a llama.
oh my gosh, I love this video! I still sing that song whenever anyone talks about llamas, or going to the dentist for that matter. I don't remember thinking this was that strange when I was little, but boy is it weird! Absolutely hilarious!
the "strangest" thing about this one (besides the obvious) is probably them going to the basement of a brownstone in Brooklyn. Never caught that before...
i used to have a toy lamb that i would drag around the house singing this song. my mother thought the name of the lamb was wee nam nama until my late 20s until i explained this to her, because that's how "me and my llama" came out of my 3-year-old mouth.
''oo ee'' That sounds like to eat. Because we don't go to the dentist to eat. And we don't go to the restaurant to get our teeth cleaned. And how you tell that's Dolly ?
I finally found it! This is one of my best and earliest memories of Sesame Street. The song is so darn catchy. Okay it does not make sense that a little girl (unaccompanied by an adult) would talk her llama to the dentist but so what?

I wish my parents had kept those old tapes, because I now have a 10 month son and would prefer for him to watch the old Sesame Street.

I am so glad that this is on you tube! Every once in a while this song (at least the part about the llama going to the dentist today) gets stuck in my head for a day. I was hoping it would be on here to see how the rest of the song goes-too funny. Sesame Street classic.

How random... I love random..

Because taking the llama to the dentist is such an every day activity, one must write a song about it... Is the singer rejoicing that perhaps it's her pet that is having pointy objects shoved in her mouth as opposed to her?

Because every New York kid would have a farm animal as a pet. There are laws I'm sure....:o)

OMG, this is why I ended up being a stoner, thanks CTW!!!

Funny, I totally accepted this scenario as normal when I was a kid.
Was this song written before this was filmed, or was it written for this sketch? Hmmm...
Nice memory either way, thanks for posting

i thought Nickki was the little girl...it was the Llama.
splotchwork5000 3 years ago
I always thought the girl looked like a Nicki, but that's probably because she mentioned the llama's name as Nicki and I associated them together (seeing as I was four or five when this segment first aired)

Holy cow! I haven't seen this one since 1986. I was 5 years old then...

hmm... upon inspection this particular llama seems to have a bit of an under bite but um, that's perfectly alright with me.

I sing this song ALL THE TIME still! By the way, who lives in the city and has a llama anyways? Didn't seem so strange when I was little though.

Wheres this llama today? And that girl? Is that vet still practicing? Who sang that song? I would like some followup answers to this.

hey what rhymes with llama...? OH duh pajamas! yeah put that in there...
that vet looked freaked out lol
Imnotthatcreative 4 years ago
The line about pajamas doesn't really make sense anyway, for several reasons (for instance, how do you "jump out of your pajamas"?) It would have been more logical to rhyme it with the word "mama" (i.e. "Me and my llama, I'm like her mama", or if the llama is indeed her legal guardian like some people have mentioned, "she's like my mama".) Then again, like some people have mentioned, this whole segment didn't really make sense, but it's a kid's show, so...
ulij20 3 years ago
I believe the lyrics are actually "just out of our pajamas". In other words, they've gone to the vet first thing in the morning, right after they've woken up.
hamsterama 3 years ago
Still doesn't make sense, namely because llamas don't wear pajamas.
Besides Pajamas doesn't really rhyme with llama. Nope, something with Mama would have been more logical, but seeing as I don't watch Sesame Street anymore, I guess it doesn't really matter.

This is the weirdest thing ever. Man, Sesame Street used to be *so* good.

HAHAHA OH damn! I remeber this video and I still sing this song... well just the part that I could remember which was just "me and my llama" over and over again. hahaha ya it is kinda weird now watching it now as a grown up but it brought back memories. I still want a llama.
KingJayavarman 4 years ago
oh my gosh, I love this video!

3) why is the girl's hair so oddly shaped?
4) why is there like, no one on the street?
5) who in the WORLD would write and sing a song about llamas!?
A7Xmisfitsx3 4 years ago 2
i used to have a toy lamb that i would drag around the house singing this song. my mother thought the name of the lamb was wee nam nama until my late 20s until i explained this to her, because that's how "me and my llama" came out of my 3-year-old mouth.

''oo ee'' That sounds like to eat. Because we don't go to the dentist to eat. And we don't go to the restaurant to get our teeth cleaned. And how you tell that's Dolly ?
