  • theres only one adam faith he had a voice of his own and was also a good actor

  • Ich bin gerade auf der Suche nach einem bestimmten Liede, aber dieses ist es nicht...

  • I was 15 when this hit the charts and I was wowed by the lyrics , persona of Adam and the recognition I was in a priviledged time in human history: full employment , peace, personal freedom to make choices, music from many sources etc.

  • so proud of my grand father for writing Adam Faiths songs! Still living at the age of 80!!

  • I was only a little girl when this was a hit but I loved this guy so much. Years later I know why I preferred him - appealing voice, memorable songs, bright as a button, convincing actor and gorgeous looks. Say no more. Much missed.

  • What pisses me off is here in the States I never heard of Adam Faith, Cliff Richard, and so many other great UK stars. The groups, yes. Not these guys, and I listened to the radio all the time in the 60's. Thanks to YT. I discovered them here last year and can't get enough.

I wonder why they weren't played here? What a crime.

  • When he recorded What Do You Want (also by Bobby Vee and Ersel Hickey) He was told to pronounce baby as Ba-beh to get the Buddy Holly sound. The entire song was based on It Doesn't Matter Anymore, the Buddy Holly sound and the pizzicato strings. He had a daughter also. POOR ME also featured the Buddy Holly Sound. There was no Jewish Affectation; he was studying acting and had made some movies in the U.K., he learned elecution and was pronouncing the lyrics clearly and distinctly. Joe

  • @TheTwentyoneninety

    So was me uncle.

But Adam was gay you know...or didn't you ? Lol...

  • Adam Faith: Competent singer, good actor and Great Bloke. Whatever he was paid was more than well deserved, and less than he was worth.

  • Classic John Barry sound, this, on the day JB's death is announced.

  • @bathsideboy ....Hi yes he was, a very nice guy and a good tipper at Christmas lol

  • I was Adam Faith's paper boy in the 70s

  • @carspete123 The all important paperboy, eh. An honour I'd say and I'm sure he was most grateful.

  • @bathsideboy More like British accent.

  • @carspete123 Wot Ya doin on er ya ole B***ed! :p

  • ah so many memmories, my granddad never liked adam faith, but this was on a compilation tape and I loved it, think the tape was called puttin on the style.

  • All round nice bloke. "Budgie" - say no more.

  • It's hard to believe that this song is more than 50 years old!

  • Have loved Adam for about 48 years.

  • I had this on a reel tape recorder. He was also a very good actor. Who remembers Budgie?

  • Thank you Dad for introducing me to this :)))) <3

  • how come "who am i " by adam faith is not on youtube..the only version (very good) is by bobby vee

  • I could hardly listen to this due to the overpowering memories it brought back, I was fifteen when this came out and liked Adam Faith more than any of the other British artists of the time. The Beatles had still not arrived at this time. Good to see this.

  • going back in time...great.....

  • One of the things that set Adam Faith apart from most of his conptemporaries in the early sixties was his ability to portray different emotions in his voice at various stages of a song. And remember most of these songs were very short. But he was a real master at using his voice to add more quality to these little tunes and thus making them so lasting and memorable.

  • Adam Faith was a lovely bloke with a nice voice and he was a great actor too. I really like the simplicity of this song, its a shame that all some people can do is to criticise a good pop tune.

  • Played his tape over and over in the car ! Great music.Love to have some 45s Paul

  • Thanks Paul.

  • I loved him a lovely fellow god rest him

  • @alexislay0008 i hope your stupid life mirrors your comment

  • Love this:)

  • First no 1 of the swinging 60s. The last hit was two little boys from rolf harris.

  • Mibbees West Bank??

  • Very Tel Aviv!!

  • Jewish accent?? Sounded to my ears like a west London, Acton Town accent.. which is slightly different from a Shepherds Bush accent.. and not to be confused with a White City one. :-))

  • Jewish definitely. Compare it to his voice in other songs then look at some clips (on here) which incorporate Jewish characters from Jewish characters of the time from Sitcoms like "Till Death Us Do Part" oe "The Rag Trade."

Buddy Holly? At that time there was a big thing about why our stars had to sing with American accents.

"Affected" as in contrived; but I posted "affected" instead of "effected" lol, and given that Helen Shapiro and Bob Dylan etc don't sing like that, definitely effected.

  • Adam looking trendy and well. The first of his two number one UK Hits....the second being "Poor Me". Happy Days.

  • The shortness of the song is one talking point. another is the affected Jewish accent which cheekily matched the lyrics playing a big part in making the song bigger than it would otherwise have been. Put a smile on all our faces then.

  • "affected Jewish accent"!!!? Not to my ears.

  • Well, it takes one to know one and I am one (although not that observant if I'm typing this on Rash Hashana) and in my school where one third of the class was Jewish the "What Do You Want" East End Jewish trader accent was an oft repeated source of humour and imitation.

  • no clue what an affected jewish accent is, my ears are the same as yours

  • @bathsideboy He's copying Anthony Newley's singing style. Bowie commented on it and said he did the same thing.

  • what the hell is an "affected jewish" accent??

  • i think you have a want...there is a subtle but unmistakable hint when he says "money"...good observation abel

  • @abelseeman Affected Jewish accent??? What?

  • @richmondie I grew up with a lot of Jewish friends and that is NOT a "Jewish accent"

  • @abelseeman " Affected Jewish accent " Na , i don't think so, It was the way he sang "Baabey " that done it .

  • His records were so short...but it didnt matter at the time

    Jim

  • Yes he was. All the British acts aped Americans at this time. Cliff and Billy Fury copied Elvis. It wasn't until the Beatles that the British got their own sound - and even the Beatles copied Little Richard at the start of their career.

  • Fantastic thanks for uploading xx

  • I saw Adam Faith perform live at a Youth Club , I was 16 ,put my arms round him ,great evening

  • Grand.

  • brilliant

  • my grandper les van dyke wrote his music :)

  • Les Vandyke (born Yani Panakos Paraskeva Skoradalides, 21 June 1931, in Battersea, was a popular singer and later songwriter in the 1950s and 1960s. He was also known as Johnny Worth (or John Worth) and John Worsley.

  • He sung with The Raindrops a vocal trio and appeared on the television programme Drumbeat. It was on this show that he met composer John Barry, and the singer Adam Faith.

  • Worth had aspirations to be a songwriter, and he asked pianist Les Reed to arrange a demo of his song "What Do You Want?".

  • Adam Faith and John Barry liked it, and with Barry's arrangements, Faith took the song to number one in the UK Singles Chart in November 1959, within which it remained for nineteen weeks.

  • i know lol just wanted to say name he was known by ;)

  • Yeah, that's me, Vice City and the talented mrs hickey's grandpa... John Worth was his writer name and his real name is John Worsley which is my mum's maiden name. Crazy that he wrote this! Well proud :)

At least we knew where we were with it at the start. It's even worse now Adam.

  • My earliest memory is of my father singing this. Good tune.

  • Sadley Missed.

    RIP Adam.

  • Adam Faith was great. Bought all his early 45s

and used to see him in pantomine in London..196???. He was the "cool" alternative to Cliff I always thought and then they all got blown away by the Fabs.

  • Finally? The full colour version was on DancinDrAlucard's site for a long time - an account now suspended.

  • Nice to see this finally on Youtube.

Have been awaiting it a while now.

Adam's first and probably greatest/most remembered hit.

Bought it at the time on a 45rpm.

Adam went on to other things.

    Anyone remember Budgie?

    Sadly Adam/Terry recently left us.
