Over the last 8 years, McCain has bucked the system 10% of the time - of course, the other 90% of the time, he voted with George W. Bush's policies.

The House of Representatives would break the tie and choose the President and the Senate would choose the VP. It would favor Obama because Democrats control the House. Dems control the Senate by 2 votes. Divided as the country will be I would be it would be wise to pick the Republican to bring the country together.
