...and anyone who would enjoy a Metal Gear game, who may have played part 2 or 3 first, would probably go out and get the other games so that they could play the whole story. this being the case, just about anyone who did play part 4, already played 1-3. and no it's not really necessary to play the old games that came before Metal Gear Solid 1 in 1998, at least I don't think it is, I never did. so yes it is a game made for the fans of the series, but that's already a given anyway.
hmmm...the way he says: "you have to be a fan to like this game," makes it sound like there are only a small handful of people who played these games. and that's certainly not the case, it's still one of the best selling series of the Playstation console. anyone who played and enjoyed a Metal Gear game would have watched all the cut scenes, at least during there first time through.
I think some people don't like MGS4 is because of the change to gameplay style. If you have played MGS 1-3, you know how it works, but MGS4 takes itself away from stealth element and is more like a action shooter.
Previous games were great because you had to use stealth to your advantage to get through and outsmart your enemies. MGS4, just grab yourself a assault rifle and kill every on the screen and move on.
That's not true, the Big Boss emblem is the one they gun for.
Extreme difficulty, no kills, no continues, no alerts, no healing items, under 5 hours.
But, it's optional to play like that, but as you get to hard and especially extreme you have to be stealthy to survive.
MGS4 controls well, but differently.
I kinda felt like the series was tired, with MGS4 retreading the same ground without much new to say, just tying the strings together and ending, with LONGASS cutscenes.
MGS4 was fun as tits. But, I didn't beat it. I'd say, if you're going to play it, but want to get the gist of the story and be caught up on the events that take place before hand, play MGS1 and MGS2. In chronological order. I have yet to complete three or four, but I'd say that Twin Snakes and Sons of Liberty are very good. I say Twin Snakes, because it's superior, from what I've seen, then it's previous version.
@Zachattack2490 Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 on he MSX are part of the series. Thing is, the Metal Gear games on the NES are not. Hideo Kojima (MGS creator) has said himself that he had nothing to do with the NES games and are not part of the series.
As much as the writing within the series is silly some of the time, I am shocked at the ability Kojima has to take all the elements of all the games, and keep such clear and consistent writing within all the games to keep everything in line with one another. I mean, my god, he really is a mad genius. And mad!
I played MGS3 on the PS2, and just like Spoony said I didn't like the menu system. But worst of all, I didn't like the stealth mechanic. Probably because I just suck at it, but I played games like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and Thief 3 before I played it. I stopped playing the game at the point where you have to infiltrate some kind of Warehouse surrounded by water reservoir.
I think you were way too nit picky with a bunch of the stuff you said failed, like MG3 with the camo system and fixing yourself and eating food... I mean I would HATE it if you had to spend an hour or so fixing a wound... And you don't really explain why they fail...
i like your reviews but the one thing is u look into the whole "being realistic" thing 2 much imo. i love how u can carry a shitload of items and change camo like its nothing, its awesome. who cares if its realistic i mean really? i dunno some people jus get bothered by that stuff i guess but its a shame, u need 2 try and dumb yourself down and keep an open imagination when playing games in order to fully enjoy them imo.

All you really need are the Metal Gear Solid games. Metal Gear Solid references the previous Metal Gear games just fine. I've never played them, and MGS1 did a fine job bringing me up to speed, and in a way that made the game really good.
But yeah, MGS4 is a fan game. Don't play it until you've played MGS1-3.
1. There is nothing wrong with the fact that MGS4 mainly appeals to hardcore fans. It actually works in everyone's favor.
2. I don't see the logic in skipping all the previous games to play MGS4. The first 3 were good enough to go back and play anytime.
3. You'd still probably like the game if you didn't play the others, even if you skip all the cutscenes. You can either play MGS4 stealthily, like originally intended, or you can play it like a Gears of War or Call of Duty game.

@TheNomade5 i didn't really get "the end" and "the pain" was pretty much just a time waster i agree with you but i'll fight till my final breath debating that MGS is the greatest series of all time, its an amazing set of games, only problem is that you must know the story to enjoy them
i personality didn't enjoy mgs4 that much as i enjoyed mgs1 & mgs3 because alot has changed...snake is old and ageing at accelerating rate,he didn't have sex with meryl and she married that Johnny guy that has diarrhea problems in all the sequels...they swapped Gray Fox with that sissy boy Raiden who was homosexual but now suddenly he's a badass...and alot of other stuff, but i loved everything else,my favorite stage was at shadow mosses island because it was nostalgic and mgs1 was the best...
I disagree. I didn't play any of the other Metal Gear games before this and some references did go over my head but as far as the basic plot goes I understood it pretty well except the last scene at the graveyard. Even though I didn't get 100% of the plot, the cut scenes were extremely entertaining. And as far as the game play went, I loved it. I'd give it a 10/10. I don't think you need to already be a fan.
Hehe, it's nearly impossible to review MGS4 without addressing the plot and cutscenes, and dedicating at least like half the entire review, solely to those points.
spoony, i love you, but YOU DONT NEED TO PLAY EVERY GAME to understand mgs4. i played 1-4, but i 've never played Metal Gear or Metal Gear: Solid Snake.
@ThePope17 your absolutely right, you MUST play MGS 1-3 to understand, but they've been making references to the MSX2 MGS games since the 1st one, well only 1 and 4 have done that but still, you don't need to play the 2 original mgs games as well to understand
Actually Ocelot's employment go in order the Philosophers>NSA>CIA>KGB>GRU>Volgin>The Patriots>Solidus>Liquids FOXHOUND>Gurlukuvich's army>His own PMC's.
@ColonelHakha yea but he was working for big boss the entire time, the only problem is
...spoiler alert....
he did hypnotherapy on himself to make himself believe that he was actually liquid snake who hates big boss for making him fell inferior and having the inferior genes (which he does not)....but im sure you already know this :)
Actually,I bought MGS4 before even knowing what MGS was lol and I loved the game-I dunno, there must be something wrong with me,I guess... maybe I liked it because of the gameplay but I also enjoyed the confusing story(the little parts of it that I actually "understood") :D My favorite thing from the game was Snake's suit.
This is what I understand about the game: The gameplay is fairly open ended and has replay value and lots of fun. The story is great and it is great conclusion of MGS saga. The problems are a cut scene is over 20 minutes, one stage's gameplay part is only up to 5 to 10 minutes, and if you are not a fan of MGS you can't understand whats going on in the cutscenes. If this is true why the game is rated so high? Did most people played all MGS series to understand whats going on?
Ocelot started as double agent for the philosophers in mgs3 in order to obtain all the cash china,U.S.S.R and the U.S. amassed. He was later influenced by Big Boss and became a fanboy of his.In portable ops,he was contacted by Major Zero to eliminate the philosphers and create the patriots to make the world as Big Boss's mentor,The Boss envisioned.Ocelot being a fanboy, agreed and asked that Big Boss join.
@Silenthunter287 Here's the problem,Major Zero and Big Boss were rivals by the mid 1970s and Ocelot, with EVA,didn't like where the patriots were going.By MGS1,Solidus,known as President George Sears at the time, sent Ocelot to eliminate the patriots. One problem:Solid snake foiled his plans.
@Silenthunter287 Solid snake was created as insurance for the patriots, hence why he foiled Big boss 2 times and why he foiled liquid and ocelots plans in MGS1.In MGS2,Solidus tried again but Major Zero created the Patriot AIs at the time and Ocelot couldn't break free from them.Ocelots final chance at destroying the patriots was implanting Liquid's persona into him to fool the patriots while destroying them.
Also, why is it that he complains about snake carrying a lot of stuff?I find that weird and contradicting considering he's a rpg fan.He didn't complain about that in Fallout 3,Oblivion,final fantasy, even others like silent hill.Negate me,but this review of mgs4 blows.
I see his point of MGS4 alienating non-fans or people who aren't up to snuff in the story.I agree to an extent but think about it:Can 1 game explain 20+years of a series to new fans? And besides, the ones who are caught up don't wanna be reminded for the millionth time about previous games. If I had a nickel for every time I heard "shadow moses"
I have to respectfully disagree, I think mgs 4 stands on its own as a great game. Metal gear 4 was the first metal gear game I played (other then acid on psp, which is non-canon and a ccg). Being the first mgs game I played I would equate mgs 4 to a twenty rock of crack. I got one hit and instantly started jones for more metal gear. After beating mgs 4, I went back and beat 1, 2, 3, & portable ops on the psp. I would rank them highest to lowest 1, 4, 3, 2, & port ops(due to bad controls)
It is just a video game, ya know... How is it in Call of Duty you have no feet and regenerate health? How do you jump 20 feet in Halo? Or in turn based RPGs, why the fuck do you take turns? Basically all you complained of was how it was unrealistic, but it is just a game. As for Liquid, quite plainly, he works for nobody. His vision is that of Big Bosses, to create Outer Heaven, where soldiers always have a place, and he will go through whatever organization he needs to to do that.
I find it AMAZING that people criticize this game for being for the fans. If your not a fucking fan why the fuck are you buying the fucking game. You know how people say if you watch a movie sequel you should watch the original? Same applies here.
The ending to MGS4 made the ending to the movie version of Return of The King look pithy and straightforward. I appreciated the high production and everything, but I swear I have spent several parts of the game watching cutscences at least 20 minutes long. The last part might have even lasted an hour. My next playthroughs, don't care, I just skip every single cutscene. I just want to play, darn it!
This was awesome for me to watch because I just finished MGS2 and 3 a couple days ago (on the same day) so this was good to know. I think Ill get it eventually.
Your complaints with MGS3 are ridiculous. The features your mention are gameplay features... emphasis on GAME. If we ignore the suspension of disbelief and all game liek elements snake should be killed/permanently crippled by 1-2 bullets or explosions, should have no save and should take several weeks instead of several minutes to recover from injuries.
I played it expecting to be lost, and expecting a lot of movies... with that level of expectation, I liked the game quite a bit, give or take some of the cheesier stuff... the lovers' standoff at the end was especially painful
Before mgs4, i never played a mgs game and i must say, in every cutscene, there was something i didnt understand. But later, i bought mgs1 and played it a little and i downloaded for ps3 the mgs encyklopedia and i read all things that bothered me in mgs and after knowing the plot, the game is even bettter :)
Look Im a fan but I wish everybody would stop complaining about realistic issues in a VIDEO GAME ABOUT A ONE MAN ARMY WITH NO SUPERPOWERS TAKNG ON AN ENTIRE MILITIA THAT IS LED BY PEOPLE WHO CAN CONTROL FIRE, WIND, LIGHTNING, ETC!
i actually played the very first two games in preparation for mgs4 way back when. I had to hunt it down because it came with mgs3 subsistence which was out of print at that point. Anyway, when i finally got it, it took me like half a year to play through both of those, which were extremely boring, but they did have a few plot elements i dont regret seeing. Altogether tho they made no difference to mgs4 because every mgs game had a recap of the previous stories that you could read.
I still made better videos than you. Oh wait, that's because you haven't made any. How silly of me. At least I haven't sunk low enough to consider the inconsistent opinions of a 20 something self proclaimed "Critic" actually interesting or important and I care even less about you. So do yourself a favour and piss off.
@dante1562 . True i have no videos up. Thats because (unlike you) i realize it isnt where my talents lie. And if you care about me so little, then why dd you reply to me?
I did those videos out of sheer boredom, it took me no longer than 10 minutes to make them and I did them with a crappy program called Windows Movie Maker.
I replied because if you get pushed you push back. So if you think you can get to me insulting videos that took 10 minutes to make, think again.
how about we just ends this now? niether of this are gaining anything from perlonging this. The reason i replied to you in the firts place was mearly because i cant stand people who leave comments on videos they dislike. I don't see why you just don't click off it. Its not like youre forced to watch it. Reply again if you like but im done with this
The whole point of leaving comments is saying what you think and it's not always going to be good. I saw this video under a friend's advice and I'm saying what I see. I'm allowed to say what I want just like anyone else in here and just because everyone likes him that doesn't make him immune to criticism.
Who cares if you can carry a shit load of items, it's video game, IT'S A VIDEO GAME!.I have been playing video games for a long time, and no video game to me is 100% real.I have also been a MGS for for a long time, and yes it's a very good kick ass series, but each MGS game has it's flaws. And i do agree that some parts of the story just confuze the shit outta me.
lol i know what you mean about the cut scenes being abusivly long. omg i tend to want some of them to just get to the damn point already. but egh thats metal gears charm. them long cut scenes... its what makes it seperate from other franchises. every series cant be the same generic game. i dig all the metal gears but i deff understand your review. i was confused as fuck alote and i played all 4 and beat all 4 games.
I've found that the cutscenes have always been overly long in MGS, any of them. I have a softspot for MGS2, but 3 and 4 kind of lost me as a gamer. Interesting story though, I agree with that. And Ocelot in Snake Eater pisses me off to no end (seriously, spin those guns around your head one more time and I'll carve out your kneecaps with a blunt spoon).

Flaws?!!!! Are you serious dude? I'm just a fan as you are and i find no flaws with this game and it is beyond amazing. I really don't know what you were playing.
i tried 1 back in the day hated it gave the series up then mgs4 came with my ps3 and i tried it once got killed by moo cow gave it up but then a friend was like you gotta get further so i did and omg i was in love it was so much fun didnt even care the cut scenes were so long they drew me in and captured my attention
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What this guy says is a lie.
I have never played any MGS game, but played part 4 for like 2 hrs and would buy a PS3 just to play it. The cutscenes are LONG and confusing, but its just so damn cool and fun.
and to be honest i liked the things with food and camo and stuff i dint mind pressing start i dont know why and yea the story around ocelot makes my head spin too X_x
yep it was good but it was just like silent hill hoemcoming and RE4 and RE5 it all became a victem of the action genre i dont need 439 weapons just 1 of each this was a shooter not a stealth
Haha, MGS4 was my first MGS that I've played. Now I've played the others at friends houses and was always a fan. But I LOVED MGS4. Was my favorite game I've ever played.
MGS 3 scenes were shorter than all the other game's scenes. The longest scene may have been 20 minutes. MGS2 had an hour long cutscene right before the final boss. MGS4's scenes are longer because the story is told mainly through the cutscenes and not the codec for once..
Spoony dude, I usually agree with your comments, but complaining about a lack of realism and *then* complaining about realism? Complaining of things going wrong, by design, in a game? Things going wrong is what a game is about. They go wrong, you overcome them. If nothing goes wrong, it's basically like playing Doom with godmode and infinite ammo.
Okay. I went into MGS4 and I had ONLY played MGS2.
I loved it. It was a masterpiece. Of course I knew I would be walking into a shit storm so I studied everything about the games. Watched retrospetives and walkthroughs, downloaded the MGS Database of PSN (Which is a godsend!).
I truly believe this is the most in depth, and well thought story to ever be implemented into a video game. And let's get something straight. I was 12, and I understood it ALL fine.
I love this game, and yet I haven't even played 1, 2, or even 3! I personally give it 9/10. It's a great game, and most of the time (The plot was still great) I didn't even consintrate the plot, I did the gameplay, it's awsome.
I hate Splinter Cell. Its aggrevating and not exciting. You have to walk through unplanned, for the sake of it levels with characters that have got no personality. The controls barley respond or work, and the only time Splinter Cell ever works is if it literally decides it wants to.
Haha! Get a new reason then, MGS4 is the most disappointing piece of crap I have played. It's dragged out, over prolonged and frustrating. The only reward is the ending, which could have benn 10x better. I'm making my own review of it in about a months time. Buy one for Uncharted 2.
Well i try using my imagination when i switch between weapons as if someone gave me it, the militia or i just found one and switched it out (rpg for example).
But yea still its a little over the top on how much snake can carry.
I didn't think the food system in MGS3 was that bad. Basically I just memorized a few food types that I knew were good, and only stuck to eating those. It worked quite well.
I love hearing your reviews, and I think you are hilarious. But I have one problem with this review in particular. You say that you think that MGS4 is unrealistic (when talking about Snakes weapon capacity), yet you also complain about MGS3s realism. (The food aspect). Do you want the MGS games to be realistic or unrealistic? Because it seems like you have a problem with both.
The whole "eating" and "healing" thing didn't work gameplay wise, and ended just being akin to clicking on items from a menu and hearing "I want some more!" or a short video of snake patching himself up.
Imagine a guy lying in grass and then changes all his clothes and wipes off and puts a new layer of face paint for camouflage, all in a second while lying on the ground. XD
your reviews are funny a lot and actually eye opening in some cases... but when you start to complain about "game" stuff like aesthetics that have to do with how character inventory is dealt with graphically. I kind of get annoyed. Thats games dude. You bitch about that kind of shit in all your reviews. Not valid at all. But I hear your stuff on the plot. I'm avid MGS fan but for people who haven't closely studied the storyline of the series it might get a bit hard to follow.
"That's games dude" ...well no, that's MGS4... show me another game where you have unlimited inventory capacity and no signs of ANY of those items on the character. Very few, if any at all, do that. He has a very valid point -- it's unrealistic and takes away ALOT of the challenge. I like it when he's reviews get technical and detailed like that.
spoony will never be this interesting again ;_;

I like how some games put you into the story, leaving you in control and your actions shaping the story and the action being meaningful.
Splinter Cell only has like 2 minutes of cutscenes between missions and has radio talk during the mission while you keep playing.
MGS certainly is unlike anything else out there I think, and it can be really good, but it can be very annoying.

Spoony, remember that you can download the MGS4 database off the PS store! It helped me navigate the plot really well!

metal gear solid 4 is a good game, but its not as good as metal gear solid 3.
I understood mgs4 and mgs4 has way too many cutscenes and it felt like a movie and not a game.
And mgs3 worked, you actuallyinteracted with the area and it may feell wierd to change outfits but come on:its better than mgs4 in gameplay.
Mgs4 is like calll fo duty type game.
You call youirself a fan spoony? go play gears of war and call of duty

i personality didn't enjoy mgs4 that much as i enjoyed mgs1 & mgs3 because alot has changed...snake is old and ageing at accelerating rate,he didn't have sex with meryl and she married that Johnny guy that has diarrhea problems in all the sequels...they swapped Gray Fox with that sissy boy Raiden who was homosexual but now suddenly he's a badass...and alot of other stuff, but i loved everything else,my favorite stage was at shadow mosses island because it was nostalgic and mgs1 was the best...
fuckinfak 1 year ago
I don't think you need to already be a fan.
abcdefh1992 1 year ago
Agree - MGS3 is my favourite, too. The plot wasn't unnecessarily convoluted, and by no MGS standards it was pretty dumbed down.

Hehe, it's nearly impossible to review MGS4 without addressing the plot and cutscenes, and dedicating at least like half the entire review, solely to those points.

ThePope17 1 year ago
@ThePope17 your absolutely right, you MUST play MGS 1-3 to understand, but they've been making references to the MSX2 MGS games since the 1st one, well only 1 and 4 have done that but still, you don't need to play the 2 original mgs games as well to understand

@ColonelHakha yea but he was working for big boss the entire time, the only problem is

he did hypnotherapy on himself to make himself believe that he was actually liquid snake who hates big boss for making him fell inferior and having the inferior genes (which he does not)....but im sure you already know this :)
superflycos123 11 months ago
@superflycos123 Well I said employment, not loyalty. And his loyalty didn't belong to Big Boss exclusively until shortly before he joined FOXHOUND.

Silenthunter287 1 year ago
@Silenthunter287 Here's the problem,Major Zero and Big Boss were rivals by the mid 1970s and Ocelot, with EVA,didn't like where the patriots were going.By MGS1,Solidus,known as President George Sears at the time, sent Ocelot to eliminate the patriots. One problem:Solid snake foiled his plans.
Silenthunter287 1 year ago
@Silenthunter287 Solid snake was created as insurance for the patriots, hence why he foiled Big boss 2 times and why he foiled liquid and ocelots plans in MGS1.In MGS2,Solidus tried again but Major Zero created the Patriot AIs at the time and Ocelot couldn't break free from them.Ocelots final chance at destroying the patriots was implanting Liquid's persona into him to fool the patriots while destroying them.
Silenthunter287 1 year ago
@Silenthunter287 So,Ocelot was a double agent, than a fanboy fighting for Big Boss from the mid-1970s til his death.
Silenthunter287 1 year ago
Also, why is it that he complains about snake carrying a lot of stuff?I find that weird and contradicting considering he's a rpg fan.He didn't complain about that in Fallout 3,Oblivion,final fantasy, even others like silent hill.Negate me,but this review of mgs4 blows.
Silenthunter287 1 year ago
I see his point of MGS4 alienating non-fans or people who aren't up to snuff in the story.I agree to an extent but think about it:Can 1 game explain 20+years of a series to new fans? And besides, the ones who are caught up don't wanna be reminded for the millionth time about previous games. If I had a nickel for every time I heard "shadow moses"
Silenthunter287 1 year ago

Your complaints with MGS3 are ridiculous. The features your mention are gameplay features... emphasis on GAME. If we ignore the suspension of disbelief and all game liek elements snake should be killed/permanently crippled by 1-2 bullets or explosions, should have no save and should take several weeks instead of several minutes to recover from injuries.

i actually played the very first two games in preparation for mgs4 way back when.

I've found that the cutscenes have always been overly long in MGS, any of them. I have a softspot for MGS2, but 3 and 4 kind of lost me as a gamer. Interesting story though, I agree with that.

I hate Splinter Cell. Its aggrevating and not exciting. You have to walk through unplanned, for the sake of it levels with characters that have got no personality. The controls barley respond or work, and the only time Splinter Cell ever works is if it literally decides it wants to.

I didn't think the food system in MGS3 was that bad. Basically I just memorized a few food types that I knew were good, and only stuck to eating those. It worked quite well.
NailStrafer 3 years ago
I love hearing your reviews, and I think you are hilarious. But I have one problem with this review in particular. You say that you think that MGS4 is unrealistic (when talking about Snakes weapon capacity), yet you also complain about MGS3s realism. (The food aspect). Do you want the MGS games to be realistic or unrealistic? Because it seems like you have a problem with both.
gippaloo 3 years ago
MGS3 was "realistic," but yet it wasn't.
The whole "eating" and "healing" thing didn't work gameplay wise, and ended just being akin to clicking on items from a menu and hearing "I want some more!" or a short video of snake patching himself up.
Everything else about the game was cool though.

your reviews are funny a lot and actually eye opening in some cases... but when you start to complain about "game" stuff like aesthetics that have to do with how character inventory is dealt with graphically. I kind of get annoyed. Thats games dude. You bitch about that kind of shit in all your reviews. Not valid at all. But I hear your stuff on the plot. I'm avid MGS fan but for people who haven't closely studied the storyline of the series it might get a bit hard to follow.
mestupkid185 3 years ago
I just find all of his going over the stuff pretty amusing
Usul573 3 years ago
"That's games dude" ...well no, that's MGS4... show me another game where you have unlimited inventory capacity and no signs of ANY of those items on the character. Very few, if any at all, do that. He has a very valid point -- it's unrealistic and takes away ALOT of the challenge. I like it when he's reviews get technical and detailed like that.
