Perhaps the producer of this video should be more honest about what the VFW District 4, The American Legion Post 586, and the National Memorial Ladies were actually instructed -- not to insert religion into a funeral WITHOUT A REQUEST FROM THE FAMILY OF THE DECEASED SOLDIER. The issue was first raised when a local pastor, at the request of the family of the deceased, was offering a prayer which contained the name of Jesus, and he was told by the VA cemetery director that (a) he could not pray using those words, and (b) that she had to see any prayer which was going to be made, in writing, before it could be approved. This is not in line with the regulations which govern military and veteran funerals on govt. land.

The honor guard at the END of the ceremony hands the shells to a family member and simply says something like "God Bless you and your family." So what, the honor guard just stands there with the shells and flag and waits for the person to say, "okay, go ahead and say God" or "nope, no God today"? Seriously, that's ridiculous. It's a simple, loving gesture on the part of a serviceman/woman offering comforting words.

If this suit is won on behalf of the plaintifs, the next step should be to charge the people who initiated the policies with human rights violations. The VFW and other organizations are not run by the VA. Having done several hundred miliytary funerals while in the military, are responsibility was the flag ceremony. The family can request military honors, which includes firing squad and palbearers. Otherwise, the funeral was a civil matter. Some were very religious, some were not. The VA did not control how the funeral was presented, to including religious rites. Stop spreading fear with ignorance.

Personally, I am not religious, but most funerals I have attended were religious ceremonies (some more so than others). I think this policy is backwards. I don't see how this is a political issue - clearly the VA in Houston is attempting to be politically correct. However, it is impossible to know what prompted it. I am a injured combat veteran that spent 10 years working with military Chaplain's as a Chaplain Assistant. I have never seen an unreasonable constraint on religious freedom. It is reasonable to ask for prayers to be reviewed by the family of the deceased, and the family to have first right of veto since the ceremony is for them.
