We hunted these animals to the brink of extinction in the modern age. No species, this close to going out forever can recover adequately in just 20-30 yrs. Their reproduction rate is very, very slow. A female whale may have 2-3 offspring in her entire lifespan and calf's stay with their mothers for years after birth. Their numbers have increased but are not to a level to that can support both commercial whaling and their long term survival. There is not one good reason to hunt whales, not one.

Did you read what you wrote things before post? I can't see any logic over there. Basically I consider whales as the food resource in the sea and don't have any interest for the humanity shit about killing animals to eat. So it is no problem to me if not endangered. Japan could produce 100% of food consumed in the country in 1960, however, now only 40% at most. We must get more food without importing from now. Whaling is one of the answers for that in my opinion.

Australia can't claim her domestic law or the EEZ right in the region, according to the Antarctic Treaty. Japan would need to kill A LOT more whales before their commercial operation would be profitable and if they were to hunt commercially and throw off the research guise they would not be able to hunt in the whale sanctuaries, so there is little chance of Japan ever making an honest profit.

We hunted these animals to the brink of extinction in the modern age. No species, this close to going out forever can recover adequately in just 20-30 yrs. Their reproduction rate is very, very slow. A female whale may have 2-3 offspring in her entire lifespan and calf's stay with their mothers for years after birth. Their numbers have increased but are not to a level to that can support both commercial whaling and their long term survival. There is not one good reason to hunt whales, not one.

Whale meat consumption is on decline, because of moratorium: people such as whale meat chefs lost their jobs, so they had to find another source of income. It is difficult to revive such a culture.

The annual cost for research is about 60 million US dollars. With unkilling procedure, you can't recover any cost spent. So australians give up the arguement of "the endangered species" in front of the scientific reasearch by Japan. That made it clear that 760,000 of Minke whales are living in the sea. Minkes are what Japan is trying to get now. Humpbacks and Fins are only for research for checking the populations change. Ok such wonderful research should be shared with the world and peer reviewed. The intended outcome and motivation behind this great gift to humanity should be made clear to the rest of the worlds scientific community rite?. I'd like to see those scientific dwarfs gathering their victims like the Alaskan indigenous people.The Japanese Pro whaler's are so full of shit, why don't they just admit what they are doing instead of running this ridiculous lie.

Did you read what you wrote things before post? I can't see any logic over there. Basically I consider whales as the food resource in the sea and don't have any interest for the humanity shit about killing animals to eat. So it is no problem to me if not endangered. Japan could produce 100% of food consumed in the country in 1960, however, now only 40% at most. We must get more food without importing from now. Whaling is one of the answers for that in my opinion.

When the are questioned they pull the race card. It is not for Japan to impose its want upon other races and treat them as ignorant when they are trying to perpetrate an agenda. that attitude played itself out in WW2 and continues with Japanese corporate culture which incidentally controls the whale trade.

We are talking about a whaling not a fishing or ww2. Please don't involve those issues. Your emotion is also unnecessary. First of all, the antarctic sea is the public sea not the australin water. Australia can't claim her domestic law or the EEZ right in the region, according to the Antarctic Treaty. Research whaling doesn't violate the treaty or the sancutuary agreement for commercial whaling in IWC. You can check it out from IWC rule article 8.

ok let me clarify something. first of all americans kill chickens, deer, cows, turkeys, and fish, for food. japanese kill whales. they kill them the in the same method, and for the same reason. im an american but ive been living in japane for my entire life due to my mothers job. and japaese kill whales the most humane way possible. personaly, i hate the japanese government, but this is probably the only thing i will stick up for them. they dont brutally murder them, they kill them, for food.

Most Japanese dont eat or want whale. Japanese corporations perpetuate the hunt to profit, the Japanese majority of don't like,need or eat it. ok mate, let me tell you how your thoughs are wrong. 1st of all...they do no 'explode" the whale like you said, they simply inject what is know as "poison" into there veinse which puts the wale into an endless sleep. secondly...if they dont eat whale, then why might i ask do they kill the whales mate? trust me, ive been living in japan for 6 years so belive me when i tell you, your wrong. do a bit of research.

I have done plenty of research on the subject and dont believe the propaganda coming from the government, 1 if they are asleep why are they still screaming as they haul them onto the factory ship? Explosive heads are defiantly used that is fact and tell me what percentage of Japanese eat whale? Japan would need to kill A LOT more whales before their commercial operation would be profitable and if they were to hunt commercially and throw off the research guise they would not be able to hunt in the whale sanctuaries, so there is little chance of Japan ever making an honest profit.

American whaling is far worse than Japanese whaling. Because America is slaughtering 207 endangered "Bowhead whales (= Greenland whale)" listed at Washington Convention for one year (only 9,000 in total on the earth at present)and Japan conducts the reserach whaling on less than 1,000 minke whales (several hundred-thousands on the earth at present) for one year. It is the urgent task of the highest importance for anti-whalers to prevent America from killing Bowhead whales (Greenland whale).

Some people may claim it is not true because whales have been reduced in number. Then, if the air (or whatever) were reduced in amount one day, should we hold our breath in order to preserve the precious air? Other people may claim it is not true because whales are intelligent. Then, do we actually know how intelligent they are? How much do we know about whales? Isn't that just our interpretation? And how is that claim relevant as a reason?

I do not see any reason to keep whaling, but I do not fully understand an extreme hostile attitude against whaling, so please let me have your comment on followings;
1. Is it acceptable to kill whale for money?
2. Is it acceptable to kill shark (fin) for money?
3. Is it acceptable to kill cow for money or to eat?
4. Is it acceptable to kill kangaroo for money?

OK, OK. Do not upset. I just want to know the reason. You sound that anti-whaling is based on whether it is endangered or not. It is never based on how beautiful or similar emotinal somthing that you think it is. OK, that sounds fair to me. However, if you look at IWC's Web site, a number of minke whales in souther hemisphere was 761,000 as the best estimete, and they are uncertain current number. What is the reliable evidence that minke whale are endangered? Please let me have sources.

Most of the data that comes from the IWC is skewed toward the resumption of whaling and has very little scientific motivation. It is motivated by people wanting to hunt whales and flood the market which a product that very few people in the world care for. So it is based upon profit, not some great ecological crusade for the greater good of mankind for the preservation of the species "Money and greed".

I did not say that at all. Most of Japan's so called scientific research is not peer reviewed so it is irrelevant. Most of the data that comes from the IWC is questionable because it is skewed toward the assumption of a desirable outcome for pro whalers. The big question's are "Is Whaling necessary?" Who benefits from whaling? . Its big business. I can tell you that fucking in the town square at peak hour will have no detrimental effect, but is it necessary or moral? Its tobacco logic revisited.

In fact, at both the 1997 and 2000 Conferences of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, more than half the countries present supported the controlled use of minke whales. Japan, Norway, China, Korea, Russia and Iceland, as well as many developing countries support the sustainable use of all marine resources (including whales) and research programs that provide for science based resource management decisions.
