  • Both Hep and Jive are Wolof words, from the west African language. Jive is a word of resistance. It refers to the story that hid the story, enslaved Africans way of hiding acts of resistance; the grin, the shuffle, the broken tool, the mistake. This song reminds us of the continuing African retentions in African American Vernacular English. And yes, it's cool, it's wonderful music, it's hep!

  • this is cool music

  • L7s need not apply- you're just not hep to the jive!

  • i guess 2 people are not hep to the jive

  • @tronyakov2

    Sqaures, baby. ;)

  • Honestly this music is WAAAAAY better than anything coming out today.......this is the original pot head music too. 2011 listening to the 1930's!!! YAAAA MAN!!! : )

  • Without Cab there would be no cool.

  • I was raised on this superb mode. It is sophisticated language and for those who know jazz. Do you even get it?

  • love the zoot suits... i wish the 'gangsta' kids of this generation still dressed liked that

  • if you dislike this then you are a commy

  • I'm hep to the jive.

  • Considered by musician as the REAL FIRST rapper on jazz, r&b, hip-hop and bee-bop.

  • this is so great, and i find myself humming this almost imediatly.

  • Prince modeled "The Time" after Cab Calloway with Morris Day (uncanny resemblance to Calloway) as the frontman bandleader, with a new age flair. If you have listened to any of Morris Day's dialog like "Chili Sauce" and "Copasetic" for example, these were taken from Calloway.

  • Cab Calloway was the MAN.

Without him there would be no cool at all.

  • My friend was just talking about rocking out to German death metal.

She asked me what I like to rock out to when I'm alone...

    :D

  • Youda nowa youa solid bringa downa!

  • .....

After listening to the market driven pop music of today hearing this music kinda reminds you that all the good music and best talents were in the past.

All rappers can do is turn up the electronics, cuss and sample.

  • @creaturebotman I don't think that it's so much that there is no one "good" now so much as it's that now everyone thinks inside of a narrow box "I must be this or that" and no one is as free spirited or true to themselves anymore. Also music for so long was mostly about enjoying and no matter the subject matter songs were always crafted to make you feel a certain way. Now people intentionally make songs that don't pull any emotions.

  • @AquaStar0 ..

    agreed

  • @creaturebotman

It really depends on where you look. in metal, a lot of music is still made largely without electronics (not including amplifiers), and it most certainly requires more skill to create than naything you can find on MTV these days. However, the old stuff was no doubt better. Even 20 years ago, music was better than it is now.

  • I am probably the only 16 year old listening to this kinda music and LOVING this..fuck Miley,Jonas Bros, Lil wayne and all that shit...this is where its at!!

I love Cab, I hope he passed away happy, knowing that people do and will always love his music. =)

  • Most people like that are the best and sexiest when young! Just look at Eartha Kitt when she was young! Damn!

  • ahhh, memories. (not that i was around for that.)

  • omg i totaly agree he was totaly sexy and he could sing damn

  • 2:05--Prince?

Holy shit, Cab was a sexy dude

  • Aw hell yeah. He's making me bisexual.

  • Haha! A bit TMI, but hey, I've experienced similar situations with Janet Jackson and Janelle Monae.

  • Hahaha, well, Janet is a very attractive woman! Even at her age she still makes me sigh like a schoolboy. : ) Same for Janelle Monae.

  • omg I so agree with you...*sigh*

  • @19nhamo90 yes he was!

  • @19nhamo90 Hell yeah I thought too!!

  • @19nhamo90 Now I'm not sure whether Prince consciously modeled his appearance after Little Richard or Cab Calloway.

  • Great song! Hep to Jive!

  • "Jive" was a 1930's-1940's slang for Marijuana! Like so many of Calloway's tunes, it was a drug song!

Weed smokers have a rich cultural and musical heritage from previous generations.

  • Are you fly? This was 1940, the man invented everything!

  • I got to know, Willy Wonka saying, "Are you hep to jive"

  • Ahhhh, such wonderful music!
