It seems like it's fan testing itself coz If it were a 60gb then the sensor which let's fan test when you tip upsidedown it does fan test and cud be faulty but ur's is a 40gb and that's strange but good luck

The reason why it does this is because your built in cooling system is gone. This happened to me also and a YLOD appeared. If I were you get it fixed now before it's too late.
My PS3 is a 40GB, I bought it in April 2008, its been noisy like this for about a year... I can leave it turned on all day making this noise but I've never had any other problem with mine (touch wood).... Its silly because it does it even when its not hot, I put a 9" desk fan blowing air at the PS3, the PS3 was out in the open, very well ventilated... switched it on and then 30seconds later wrrrrrrrrrrr, fans back on full speed as shown in this video!

I have the same problem too, 40gb version, built in sept 2007. I have swapped 15 blade fan for the 19 before, it does not solve anything. I even cut a hole in the bottom, still sounds like a jet. it is not worth your time to fix it, if you are thinking about it.

thats not exactly true. from my research the difference is minimal. and component cables are intended for HDTVs... i can get 720p and 1080i (my tv doesnt support full 1080p). u will pick up an hdmi when the opportunity arises.

my friends ps3 was in a fire and he gave it to me, it was this loud so i opened it up and I put new thermal paste on the Processors artic silver 7 and put it back together, then it worked perfectly

Mine gets to the lvl yours was at when your first started MGS4 (your fan ramps up twice after that) My fan gets and stays at that lvl after about playing for 10-15 minutes and thats in a hot bedroom(I have the 80GB MGS4 Bundle). If it was in warrenty I would call sony and have them replace it (most likely the temperature sensor is fried that ramps up the fan speed relative to heat). If its out of warrenty then I wouldent worry about it to much.
it is under warranty and i have considered returning it. problem is, i cant bear to part with my ps3, i dont live in the US and i cant imagine sending it away for 2-3weeks and have call of duty 4 sit and gather dust.
also, i heard rumours that a newer version of the 40gb is coming out next month, perhaps it would be wise to wait until that is released before sending it away.. im still undecided
The "new" version of the 40GB is just the same 40GB but with a Dualshock 3 instead of SIXAXIS. Yeah, I don't think I would send in my PS3 if it only had the minor fan problem. Mine gets a little noisy when playing MGS4 for a little while, but nowhere near that loud. Like you said it could be the environment (hot or humid perhaps?). Even so that's almost as noisy as a XBOX 3FixMe so I'd call Sony ASAP.

I think you should remove that chessboard. Mine has a lot of free space on the right side and back of the console. I do have a 60GB, though. My console does sometimes spin up until your 45 second mark in this video. It never ramps up to that speed....

ok, i have a ps3 in a somewhat hot room, and its flat, like yours, and i have mgs4, like you, and i ps3 is kinda lound when it starts, but will soon quiten down. that is really loud. you need to return that, it aint right

Dam... Mine gets to the lvl yours was at when your first started MGS4 (your fan ramps up twice after that) My fan gets and stays at that lvl after about playing for 10-15 minutes and thats in a hot bedroom(I have the 80GB MGS4 Bundle). If it was in warrenty I would call sony and have them replace it (most likely the temperature sensor is fried that ramps up the fan speed relative to heat). If its out of warrenty then I wouldent worry about it to much.

it is under warranty and i have considered returning it. problem is, i cant bear to part with my ps3, i dont live in the US and i cant imagine sending it away for 2-3weeks and have call of duty 4 sit and gather dust.
also, i heard rumours that a newer version of the 40gb is coming out next month, perhaps it would be wise to wait until that is released before sending it away.. im still undecided

The "new" version of the 40GB is just the same 40GB but with a Dualshock 3 instead of SIXAXIS. Yeah, I don't think I would send in my PS3 if it only had the minor fan problem. If I did I would make sure I was to get mine repaired and not sent someones crapped our refurbished one. Hey whats your PSN name? Mine is MassterTed add me :)

Mine gets a little noisy when playing MGS4 for a little while, but nowhere near that loud. Like you said it could be the environment (hot or humid perhaps?). Even so that's almost as noisy as a XBOX 3FixMe so I'd call Sony ASAP.

okay.. almost the same problem with mine.. but.. you know when you play the ps3 too long the fan gose crazy? that happens to me.. every 10 mintues..!! and that only happened to my friend once.. after 4 1/2 hours of constat play. shit. tell me if u guys can help. thanks.

U need to call sony on that 1. that seems very abnormal. my 60 gig is very quiet. even when i put it in a closed space it doesnt sound that loud. I can tell its real, ps3warlord is just running his mouth. Why do people take it as a personal offense when someone talks about wii, ps3 or 360. seriously ppl like that need to go outside.... its a nice day.

I think you should remove that chessboard. Mine has a lot of free space on the right side and back of the console. I do have a 60GB, though. My console does sometimes spin up until your 45 second mark in this video. It never ramps up to that speed....

really now, what could i possibly do to make it more clear that its real? i know, NOTHING.
Watch other videos, there are some that are just THAT noisy.
