  • All this footage is from the Elliott Smith documentary "Strange Parallel".

  • Good song, (Baby Britain) but why did they film the music video in America?

  • Way ahead of his time and gone to soon. Amazing talent.

  • Wow. So good. Sounds like he had lots of Beatles influence.

  • well that is because he did

  • fantastic

  • When Elliot Smith sang about booze and drugs, he was using them as a metaphor for emotional dependence, isolation and heartbreak. When he sang about emotional dependence, isolation and heartbreak, he was using them as a metaphor for booze and drugs. Sometimes, anyway.

  • ahahahaahahahaahha, pussy vocals? cmon man

  • fuck you

  • @Demonslayr666 dude, you better be fucking kidding me? lolololol

  • portland,

  • Best Song Ever... at least top 10.

  • The beeping rules

  • I love this song, but at 2:19 the beeping tone just drives me nuts!!!

  • It's not a cameo, this is all footage from Strange Parallel.

  • this is one of the few songs that elliott had an upbeat, happy, joyful tune to it. was probably made when elliott was in a happy relationship, most of his life he's been hurt.

  • actually this song is about alcohol abuse i thought? very downer song lol

  • makes me think of him. xo mom. i miss you dad

  • Are there two different versions of this song?? The one that I downloaded from iTunes doesn't have much drums as this version. Where can I get the youtube version?

  • Hi Cheshire - yes, this was the single version, with more drums in the chorus. The album version only has drums in the final chorus.

  • Off of me lol pm your email and the name of the song(Cause i forget stuff easy) then i'll sned it to you when i can.

  • Or perhaps adust your windows media player settings(or whatever you have) Either way just message me and i'll get the mp3 of this youtube song to you as soon as i can.

  • I do love this song, but I don't think any of that was filmed in Britain.... Or was that the point? Maybe it was Sherwood Forest.

  • God damn he was brilliant. I love him.

  • Dude, there's a cameo of the robotic hand from Strange Parallel!

  • Why did it take me so long to find you?

  • im not an elliot smith fan myself, but wat is awesome is that no1 has a bad thing to say about him, which in these days is an amazing feat

  • I wish that other people would get a chance to be transformed by Elliott Smith. The only person outside of my family that has heard of him is a friend of a friend.

  • same (sad face)

  • did he kill himself or was he murdered

  • the prevailing theory is that he killed himself. it doesn't really matter though. he's gone, and the world is a bleaker place because of it. it's a good thing that he left such a legacy of great music behind. he will truly live forever in the minds and hearts of the people who love his music

  • i agree with you exactly.

  • It kind of does matter. But I doubt we'll ever know. Even though he had a history of being depressed, I'm pretty skeptical about it being a suicide to be honest...

  • if you think it was jenifer there is a entire documentary about the evidence proving her overwhelming innocence it was suicide, as sad it is to face .

  • Yeah I've heard about it and want to see it. Hasn't exactly been convincing outright from the reception it's received. More 'controversial'...

  • wonder if he liked it over here in england. i hope he did.

also in this video, he is playing a gold top les paul and a 12 string acoustic. sweeeet.

  • I first heard this song last summer driving from Fairbanks to Anchorage Alaska and had to stop to write down the name of the song and artist so that I could look it up on YouTube. I had never heard of Elliott Smith before then (hey, I'm 53 years old !) but love his sound !!!RIP...E.S. !

  • you won't be disapointed

  • its great because old people just stop listening to new music at some point.

  • um no.

  • to what?

  • always x

  • miss him so very much

  • 90s were so cool.

  • the 90s weren't just cool they were the last days of music as we know it.. now its on to cookie cutter songs that get pumped out of a factory only identified by there serial numbers.

  • so true T.T

  • this is sweet

  • ROBOT HAND! YOU NEED IT!

  • He is so amazing. RIP

  • But he's beautiful. :|

  • Its Joanna Bolme

  • Well, I'm just glad she wasnt his girlfriend or whatever cause I'm freakin in love with him.

  • Duuude. Does anyone know who that lady at 2:16 is?

  • It might be Mary Lou Lord. She worked with Smith on a few song.

  • Revolvers been turned over.

  • this guy has the amazing ability to make you superbly depressed and then bring you out of it almost at will. what an incredible songwriter and spirit. thank you

  • yeahhh I know

  • awesome video, great song

audio quality... well, it's worth watching/listening to

  • Wow this song sounds great. :)

  • this fucking song rocks.

  • You are a record label right? Maybe you could post a better sounding version. You're fired.

  • anyone know any other amazing artists like him?

  • radiohead... i promise

  • eliott was one of the best...balls01balls01...

  • no one is as amazing

  • this is probably my favourite song by elliott, i love the resemblance to "getting better" by the beatles

  • What's truly amazing is that this isn't even close to his best work...

  • don't! I wish he were alive, he would have had brilliant albums. Maybe you'll be special to someone you'll meet?

  • Thats nice..

  • Could you please make this embeddable? Thank you ^__^

  • why would you make this unembeddable? why? seriously.

  • Elliott Smith was a Brilliant, Dedicated, Inspiring Singer/Songwriter.

  • totally regretting that i hadn't paid attention to him before

  • Most underrated artist ever....

  • fuck oath, most people look at you blankly when you mention elliott smith...i feel sorry for them

  • I agree so much lxluke

  • want to cry

  • kind of obvious how he rubbed off on death cab

  • i love death cab!

  • I love Death Cab too, I don't know why you were given thumbs down... but Elliott really was something else.

  • whats rubbed off? the expression, what does it mean

  • this is from that documentary with the robot hand

  • such a beautiful voice and an unquestionable talent. his songwriting skills are amazing, rest in peace elliott smith. your music will be remembered forever

  • one more fucking Genius that world kill, quality music is not for here only heaven or other pure places

  • I love elliott and we all miss him, and I hove this, because its so upbeat and I just love seeing elliott doing all of that, its so amazing to see how peaceful and happy he looks while hes playing his music.

  • RIP elliott, you died too young, your music lives on.

  • He was.. amazing

  • He was a genius. I love his composition style so much.

    You are being missed ELLIOTT!

  • i miss...

  • genius.

  • another perfect song

  • perfect voice for a perfect song about imperfection

  • cheese sandwich?

    and fries please

  • Stupid reply!

  • Comment removed

  • hey i didnt know he played drums!

  • he played most of the instruments himself

  • wow youre a fucking dick. you need to just shut the fuck up because i doubt you fucking know anything. you prolly cant play the guitar better than a fucking two year old. hes an amazing musician. so fucking suck it bitch

  • ahahahahaha he said "lay guitar"

  • At least he could use proper grammar. You obviously have some weird thing for him considering you've been commenting on more than one of his videos. Fucking idiot.

  • hahaha..only dumb inferior pricks like yourself try to equate intelligence(which you know little of)with commentary(try reading cummings, elliot or many writers douche and give them some lessons on grammar). stick with sucking dick like your dad

  • someone needs a helmet

  • god for bid the guy felt happy and had it in him to write a most beautiful upbeat happy song. anyone who criticizes this song should just stop listening to e smith!!!!

RIP ELLIOT SMITH, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN OR REPLACED!!!!

  • The melody is upbeat and happy, but the lyrics, as usual, are not, which is often the case with Elliott songs.

    Either way, great song...

  • They're not sad lyrics. They're just real. All of his songs are real. Not happy or sad. They have conflicting emotions. Like Elliott said, people only say his songs are sad because they don't get it. He said depressing is real, but real doesn't have to be depressing. I like his music because it's more realistic and has some kind of meaning unlike every other song you hear on the radio these days.

  • this is a great song!

    and i love baysides cover...

  • hahaha my name is britain and i love this song!

  • everyone should probably just shut up, the song is obviously an homage to the beatles and the like.

whether or not you like the song is up to you, but for christ sake, the man's a genius, he's allowed to have a couple upbeat songs, eh?

and kurtcobainisgod, i completely agree. love the image of elliott in this video!

  • this video completely shatters the image of a celebrity. it shows that Elliott even though he's a "big rock star" he can just walk around town and look just like all of us. Elliott was basically what Kurt Cobain wanted to be..

  • I wish he was still around.

  • this is so good

  • Pixi, Elliott was a huge Beatles fan, who were "poppy" themselves, and that is reflected in his music.

  • nevermind lol.. just saying before you accusem e of something read the conversation i was having with something.. because along with me other people were agreeing..

  • beatles forever <3 and this eliot guy just started listening to him he reminds me of the beatles!

  • wtf lol.. you obviously havent looked at the last argument.. he kept talking shit about the beatles and elliott.. and stuff..

  • *.*

  • this is a good song, but very un-Elliot Smith-esque, and more poppy than one would expect.

  • Well, Nirvana music wasn't as depressing until they hit it big too... I guess you just want him to "keep pumping out the product, just a total waste..."

  • I can't understand what the word "indie" even means any more. If the major labels are pretty much done, isn't everyone now "indie"? And kiddies, once upon a time, indie meant you were NEVER going to be on Jay Leno or Jimmy Kimmel. Just saying. (And Elliott Smith kicks ass)

  • wow, u are so cool, thanks for enlightening us.....

  • Personally, If I got asked to be on Jay Leno I would do it to show good manners. That is a terrible example of being indie. I know you'll try to argue back with some condescending statement because we haven't been around long enough to see this so called "true indie." Please don't bother.

  • Somebody probably already made this point but this song sounds much like The Beatles "Getting Better."

  • i cant see how its possible to really choose the top five indie bands. although i love mgmt and fleet foxes, and i can listen to vampire weekend and band of horses over and over again! just sayin

  • why is everyone hating on me.

  • because you consitantly keep commenting on this video and the first comment was talking shit about his song and the "fucking beatles" wich maybe your too young too like, but its almost all of our inspirations... specially elliott's inspiration so dont talk shit

  • elliot smith is a great musician but the beatles just makes me wanna kill somebody sometimes. can't i have a damn opinion. and this is prolly one of his worst songs. it sounds too clean and edited and popy. i've been a smith fan for a long ass time but this song isn't all that great. im sure i just made 5 people cry. sorry

  • look your not that important to make people cry... but if its opinion how is saying this is his worse song... an opinion? sounds like your trying toprove something not give out an opinion pal

  • ok ...i believe this song is not as good as the other songs i listen to.

  • top five indie bands

    1. elliott smith

    2. bright eyes

    3. mountain goats

    4. fleet foxes

    5. kevin m. kirker

but elliott smith will always be #1! we miss you and love you elliott! we'll never forget you! rest in peace

  • NO! these are the top five indie

    1. elliott smith

    2 . mgmt

    3. band of horses

    4. silversun pickups

    5. vampire weekend

  • Ammenn.

  • NO .

  • Does anyone know when Elliott died?

  • October 21, 2003

  • duuuuh

  • When did sounding like the beatles become a bad thing at all?

  • lol idiot

  • along with the musical brilliance. he had the best t shirt collection of anyone. of course he made the shirt cooler.

  • what is this "Robot hand is the future" stuff? He has a robot hand at the beginning. Rather confused....

  • The robot hand is from a video (short documentary) on Elliott Smith; you can find it here on youtube. It's basically about a dream that Elliott had. You should watch it.

  • Oh I forgot to add: The name of the video is: Strange Parallel

  • If your not careful, I'm gonna come around and shit in your tea

  • Strange Parallel is such a cool movie too :)

    ROBOT HAND IS THE FUTURE!

  • He composed all of his music: bass, drums, vocals, piano, and guitar. How many artists are able to do that... better yet play one instrument? There isn't anyone who even remotely sounds like him.

  • Elliott Smith is amazing. why are you argueing about nonsence.

  • always reminds me of 'getting better' by the beatles

  • Strange.. It always reminds me of Penny Lane by the Beatles.

Well I think we can agree that The Beatles heavily influenced his music xD

  • Simple

    Shy

    Elegant

    Great

  • it was made using footage from the "strange parallel" video documentary of Elliott going around Portland and New York.

  • it evocative me of the beatles (is this correct english?^^)

  • No. No it's not.

  • why is this comment scoring badly?

  • Evocative is an adjective, not a verb. So you just say "it's evocative of The Beatles."

  • or it reminds me of the beatles?

  • There's nothing wrong with either word, so why fix what isn't broken?

  • oh its soooo greate =) i love this music =) =)

  • i love steven paul smith

    <3

  • CHECK OUT MY ELLIOTT COVERS!!!

  • such a loss to the music world...elliott smith was an amazing songwriter. also, this video brings back so many great memories of portland...

  • Me too, I moved from there around the time he died.

  • such a great addition to music, something that can and never will be repeated. Elliott will always be young.

    XO

  • I despise that this video can't be linked. Up yours Universal Music Group!

  • Yes, agreed. They guy is dead, for god's sake. Hey Universal, suck it!

  • agreed

  • UHHHHH most underated american musician/singer/songwriter in the history of the U.S.
