The repetoir? Elvis songs, Larry Williams, Carl Perkins, The Coasters, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and all the others, Spellbinding stuff. Paul playing an unconnected rhythm guitar, Stuart on Bass, they shook the foundations of St. John’s Hall and the very souls of those of us there to witness, on a cold Friday in Bootle, the real beginning of what was to become the greatest phenomena in the history of popular music.
They say The Cavern was where the amazing Beatles thing all began but I recall seeing them performing at several Merseyside venues prior to ‘ending up’ at The Cavern before the records brought them universal success. 1961, I saw The Beatles at Litherland Town Hall, Aintree Institute, The Lathom in Seaforth, Alexander Hall in Crosby, Hambledon Hall and Blair Hall. But it was Friday 6th January in 1961 when, at St. John’s Hall, when I first saw The (five) Beatles perform.
When I was in the U.S. Navy, I saw The Beatles in Hamburg, Germany in 1962, then again in 1963 in Liverpool. We had taken President Kennedy's two Marine 1 helicpotors to Europe when he spoke at the Berlin wall in 1963, and stopped in Liverpool, and some of us went to The Cavern, and lo and behold, the boys were there! Some of the best, and greatest memories of my 66 years on earth. Loved Liverpool! Been wanting to go back as a civilian ever since. AND...my last name is McCartney! :D)
@Iluvthebeatles9 Yes, that's my last name. And, Paul's first name is James, which is my dad and brother's middle name. Pauls brother and I share the same first name. And, my middle initial is P. Paul was born in 1942, as was my brother. Pauls brother and I were born in 1944. Paul and I are both left handed. I, however, play guitar right handed, don't ask me why, 'cause I do everything else left handed. Well, almost everything. Pauls mother's name was Mary. My mom's sister's name is Mary. :D)
Great Video remember Merseybeat times myself along with all these clubs and cinemas they were truly great times and the biggest and greatest moment was 1966 Liverpool won the championship and Charity Shield at Goodison Park and Everton the F A Cup and to see each team running around Goodison with each trophy along with Roger Hunt and Ray Wilson with the World Cup I don't think we will ever see this ever again. Both sides united with respect and dignity just proud to have been there.
Great visuals! I had a hard time listening to this 'over the top' version though. It was better for me with the sound off.....the original is the only one honest enough for me.
@spareaxe fancy going to see the bands at the cavern at lunchtime...i get 20 mins break now...not enough time to eat my lunch then back to it...superb times
Loved it , very emotive to someone like me who left Liverpool to start a new life in OZ, as they say " you can take the boy out of Liverpool but you can't take.................."
I have viewed all of your videos, you have a wonderful gift , I appreciate it.
Would it be it be possible for you to do a "John Lennon montage" of his life in pictures with his song "Working Class Hero" in the background. I know a lot of people would love it, and it would personally "Please Me"
I had the good fortune to visit Liverpool last November and I fell in love with the place!! I have plans to return this September! This is a great vid!
Liverpool is the people that live there. Enough said.
