@jhon6839 The sound quality is quite good. Similar to CD quality. You can record from just about any source (CD, vinyl, etc.) and you will find that the recording is nearly indistinguishable from the original source.
man this tape deck is superb,i got one this in my collection, i had this same problem in the reels brake system like you, its very simply to repair, take a look in the service manual pag 8 STOPPER POSITION ADJUSTMENT until the pag 13. good look.
u got 2 agree that the best record demo u can do with a piece like that ,is with a very slow melody . there u can see the difference , not with a radio show
hLLO.JUST A TIP,WHEN YOU REWIND THE TAPE YOU SHOULD APPLY THE REVERSE SWITCH SO AS THE TAPE SLOWS DOWN MORE CALMLY.iF YOU USE THE BRAKE YOU WEAR OUT SHOES ALSO THERES A CHANCE THE TAPE CAN SNAP. LEARNT THAT FROM OWNING AN A77.
The more modern decks have electronic braking, which actually uses the motors to slow the tape down before applying the brakes. The brakes only get applied at the last second before the tape stops. The brake pads actually rot from old age faster than they wear out from use in these machines.
Depends who you ask. Many reel to reel fans insist that these machines sound better than anything else on earth. In my opinion, these machines make good copies of whatever source you feed them. If you start with a good vinyl record, you will get a tape copy that sounds nearly identical to the original vinyl. But it can't magically recreate anything that is missing from the original source. It does tend to add little boost to the bass, though, so that might help if the original lacks bass.
yes, this is right, nothing to add, but what about when playing a studio tape that is made out of the master! This is the correct comparison. Analog master->vinyl Vs Analog master->rtr tape. I think RTR is best, no RIAA and closer to the master format!
APRIL 6 2008 - hey i am selling/will trade a like new one of these if you're in new york, check it out on craigslist . I want to trade it for something audio related IE mic pre, compressor, etc. It works 100% great, heads like new, VUs work, transport and rollers work 110% like new. If you're in New York call 212-444-8894. Thanks!!! Josh
being as 100 dollars is the most i ever held in my life at one time, i sprung for an akai x-150d. needed some major repairs due to a potmetal piece crumbling inside during shipping but i did it and a week later i had it working perfectly. minor quirk is that i cant record individually to the 4 tracks in a synchronized manner, and only accepts 7 inch reels. but i could always spool 1 10 inch rel onto 2 smqller ones i guess. once again minor quirks, but you have a great deck!
...these nabs are wrong ! TEAC, no Technics ! LES

You're probably right about that, but how often do most of us get a chance to make copies of original master tapes?
Rick
rick6612 2 years ago
Yes of course we don't, but I just talked about the quality that can be achieved.
It's sad, cause this could happen if... but music industry does not care about music quality.

@daviewavie112
Only if it's the REAL master recording.

Hey,!
WXRT! I'm a Chicago expatriate. I might even have some 1/4" Ampex 406 with some of Hemmert from about 1977.....
hcbflash 3 years ago
That would be cool to hear your recordings from 1977. I bet she sounds like a little kid!
rick6612 3 years ago
I've got one I'm looking to sell mine. Did you sell yours? About how much?
hcbflash 3 years ago
Yes I did sell mine for a pretty good price... I think I got about $600 or $700 for it, which wasn't too bad considering the repairs it needed.
