  • Who is the sax soloist

  • I always gets a kick out of watching freddie play the chords on a fast song, because it always looks so nonchalant in his body language but the left hand has a look like it's frantically playing the part

  • I bow down to Harold Jones. GREAT drummer

  • FUCKING A, MAN.

  • Charlie Fowlkes on bari sax! what a good sound on a low Bb horn.... and of course, i'm a bari sax guy (:

  • all about Oscar Brashear. master trumpet player

  • I adore big band jazz. I finally managed to find time to do jazz band and we're doing this piece! Not as fantastically as Count Basie's band, of course, but we're getting the hang of it.

  • Im so happy to be a part of the jazz band in my school. I play drums and love all styles of music but everybody forgets about big band music and just go for the modern jazz. We play so much big band music its rediculous

  • COOOOOOOKIN'

  • Niiiice...

  • fantastic! I really want to play it on electone.

  • Perfect drumming from Harold Jones, all from a basic 4 piece set, Shows what a great drummer can do. You don't need a multitude of drums and cymbals to swing and drive the band. He was my second favorite Basie drummer after Butch Miles.

  • Harold Jones was on fire right here.

  • The 2 piccolo flutes at the very end are hilarious!

  • I think the title is a play of words with the Magic Flute by W.A. Mozart.

  • Beautiful! I agree that Harold Jones is first-rate.

  • pure SAMMY NESTICO!!!!!!! THAT GUY IS A GENIUS!!

  • any idea why he left basie.???

  • Total badassery.

  • Harold Jones was a great drummer, highly under rated. He was my second favorite Basie drummer after Butch Miles. Worked for many years with Sarah Vaughan.

  • Man, thats as close to Buddy as I've ever heard.........great work Harold ,,,!!!!

  • Man,That's as close to Buddy Rich, as i've ever heard......just great stuff...!!!!

  • Einfach Klasse!!!!!Basie!!!!!!!!!!

  • 1:31-1:44 God, that guitar player must be WORKING. Jeez, I don't play guitar, but that's gotta be tough.

  • We're talking about Freddie Green! His rhythm is perfect! Just listen any recording of Basie only with the rhythm section to appreciate his playing. A good example is the 1974 album "Satch and Josh", where Basie plays with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Louis Bellson, and of course Freddie Green.

  • Freddie Green is one of my favorite guitarists. His role was apparently modest because he was not a soloist but remove his guitar from the orchestra and you realize how important he was.

I studied jazz guitar and aimed to emulate him unfortunately there's no demand for this kind of work, big bands being a thing of the past.

  • You're absolutely right! And it's true, there's no demand for big bands. I try to play Basie's style on the piano, but nowadays everybody wants modern jazz (post Kind of blue, I mean), which is great and I love it too, but lots of people thinks that's the only kind of jazz. I think a good jazz musician must know something from Scott Joplin to Scott Henderson, for understand the roots and the future way of jazz. Anyway, I think Freddie is the most perfect rhythm guitarists in history!!

  • I almost forget it. Maybe big bands are too expensive, but I try to play the classic swing standards with only the rhythm section, piano, bass and guitar (Nat King Cole's style) and why not drums (Basie's rhythm section). I think it's a nice alternative to a big band, keeping the style.

  • Never get enough of this great tune. What an incredible band. Thanks for posting.

  • im a metal and ive always been inspired by the energy of the drummers who play these high tempo songs. awesome

  • intense bass.

  • Ahhh i love this song! And seeing the greats playing so effortlessly makes it so much better!

  • freddie green the man

  • He is Basie band's time keeper & groove maker!!!!!

His job always awesome all the time.

  • My Dad was just passing by my Office and he commented that he saw the Count at Massey Hall and the Royal York in Toronto in the 60s.

  • what about the sax player man?...nobody talks about him?...thats Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis brothers!

  • The report of Harold Jones' demise is greatly exagerated and untrue. He is very much alive and well, continuing to be the greatest jazz drummer in the world. You can check him out with Tony Bennett on tour and you don't want to miss Tony's latest CD, "A Swingin Christmas" featuring the Count Basie Big Band, including Harold.

  • Harold is from Richmond, Indiana and was a family friend in my childhood. My father initiated a Basie Day and Count came to our house!

  • he is my cousin . he is my granmothers sister son .

  • I love Harold Jones. I love Count Basie. Thank god for Nestico's genius

  • Whats so cool, try to get a band together and play this today. out there. This is Great thanks for posting !

  • lockjaw!

  • Harold Jones - great drummer and a real gentleman.

  • Also, that drummer, Harold Jones. He actually just died about a week ago.

  • @tjc197 get real Harold is healthier than you are and is playin w/ Tony Bennett / Di Benedetto , YOU CAPICHE , caio, Bambina

  • Yerp, that's freddie. That was an amazing sax section.

  • Is that Freddie Green??

  • Yes.

  • ...it is Freddie Green! What a band, all great guys and this is the first time I get the chance to see and hear Harold Jones driving the band.

  • Harold now lives in Woodacre in the San Francisco bay area. He has a big band that plays out of the area and does plenty of local gigs. I've had the good fortune to be on a few gigs with him in the last few years. He makes everyone sound great and he's a completely great guy to hang with, smart, funny and unpretentious.

  • God Bless Harold Jones, one of the greatest un-sung heroes of the drumming world.

  • harold jones is good.... but i prefer sonny payne.....

  • An absolutely flawless performance of a magnificent composition by the greatest band leader of all time......

  • Isn't this a Nestico tune? I've played it several times, and I believe he was the composer. It's a blast to play, and I know Nestico wrote a lot for Basie. Great to see this awesome performance!

  • Yes, indeed, Sammy wrote this one. A wonderful man and a terrific mentor. I was a student of his 35-36 years ago. He took me under his wing and taught me basically everything I know about jazz. I f you liked this one, find a copy of "The Wind Machine", another Basie/Nestico collaboration. Whew!!

  • Played Wind Machine in college - love it!

  • I was in the college band Sammy was directing when he wrote "Machine" . We were his "lab" to iron out the wrinkles before he took it to Basie.

  • Yup it is, if you enjoy it check out a basie cd entitled Basie-straight ahead, hopefully uv heard of it already. it has excellent arrangements of this tune as well as many others!!!!

  • Wow, it's great to see this live as I have wanted to see Harold Jones play with the Count. The Basie drummmers were all awesome...I heard something live with Basie and Mickey Roker and he sounded unbelievable. Straight Ahead is my favorite Basie Album. I saw the band recently and Butch Miles is great.

  • Harold Jones is in the house!

  • I'm playing this one now with the big band I'm a memeber of. Quite tricky sax parts! Being the first tenor, I'm afraid I won't be so lucky to produce a similar great solo to Lockjaw's :).

  • The best track on "straight ahead" by far.....maybe a close second is Switch in Time. Cool.

  • What about hayburner?

  • harold jones is one of the great big band drummers.

    that man PLAYED!!

ive had that 1968 berlin concert on audio tape for years!

and i aint planning to record over it....ever!

  • @bigbreadeaterellis Harold is THE Stick...

  • Yes, that is Lockjaw Davis. As far as Harold Jones.. Outstanding. He's playing on what now looks like a schoolkids starter set and absolutely kicks Basie's band in the a**. One of my favorite clips!!!

  • Is that Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis on the tenor?

  • what sectacular drumming dont forget his name harold jones my god awsome player.
