Rothmans and Shell where two main sponsors for Porsche in that time. Rothmans was still "main" sponsor but the contract guaranteed Shell also a "full paint job" on one of the LeMans event. That is one part of history. Othe one is that Jaguars had Silk Cut cigarettes paintjob. SilkCut was owned by Gallaher Group, but they also had Benson and Hedges - that was also part of Rothmans group. In other words, they wanted to focus pepols atetion on only ONE main cigarete producer... Silk Cut
Rothmans where still in the sport, but they had "one year in second line" . I remember the main sentence of Shell and Rothmans double sponsorhip. It was: "Two names, that take Porsche to the limit" and both logos where on posters and all that stuff.
Porsche would've won if one of their mong drivers hadn't drained the reserve fuel tank trying to overhaul the #2 Jag ... therefore, his own stupid fault. It's all about the Jaguars. I sense a bitter Porker fan
Yes according to Motorsport magazine Porsche would have won in 1988 if not for some failed pit stop which made them loose lots of precious time.Well done Jaguar.
the problem with these Road To Le Mans coverages like thi one is that they don't show some crucial parts of the race. In this one, they didn't show the Wollek-driven Porsche being retired, and didn't even touch up on the fact that the Stuck/Bell/Ludwig actually took the lead again in the morning, but had mechanical issues which delayed them for 10 minutes or so.
it would be nice if andretti would win with his son

Sad none of the Sauber cars finished the '88 race, but they made up for it in '89 and '91

Jag's V12 seems to have had the advantage on the straights while Porsche had it in braking.
Some great racing there. I was 5 at the time... lol!

That is great group C racing. Shame the Sauber Mercedes team withdrew in 1988. Now that would have been good. Porsche vs Jaguar vs Mercedes
