We have a few in this area that will flatly tell you they can't help you unless you show an insurance card. And they're serious!

the problem is that ultimately those bills have to be paid by somebody and right now the US doesn't really agree on who should make those payments. as we don't have a socialistic system we are somewhat at the mercy of the health insurance industry as to what will be paid for and what will not be paid for. perhaps we'll figure out something in the next year that better addresses the needs of our citizenry.

A few years ago I got a bacterial infection in my lungs and ended up in the emergency room. I was not in near as bad of shape as you were but it took me a good six months to fully recoup from that. Respiratory illness has to be the worst and is nothing to mess with. I had no insurance either, I will not tell you my bill because you will have a fucking heart attack.
