i keep my puppy on a loose leash and she still tries to bite it and tug at it. does she just need more practice? is there any other tips u guys could give me?
@theDudeAbides1100 spray the leash with some stuff that they don't like the smell of, sour apple spray works well I think or you can go to the vet and ask them they'll reccommend something. I got some stuff from a friend. Worked well with my 10 week old lab x kelpie today.
@littlegft94 thnx im going to try that. i got her to stop biting it while walking, but when I run with her she allways runs with the leash in her mouth. its cute, but she's gotta stop lol
I vacuumed my cat once because it was full of wood shavings then every time I used the vacuum after that the cat would sit on the brush end until I vacuumed her again.
It would be super if someone out there would create a video on loose leash training and record it with a puppy so we can actually watch it. In other words, record a short segment then record some more 1 week later and then again 1 week later to show the progression all on one video.
I can feel your calm and gentle demeanor and would bet your pets sense it too. Which makes for a great dog owner/trainer.
yo everybody if youll have a chance can youll please check out my video and tell me what you think just search" smartest pitbull pup" or "956razorramon" on youtube.. my pitbull dro is only 14 weeks old..thanks
My dog is 5 years old (today).... can I re-train him to walk on the leash at this age? he also poops in the street and not on the grass!! I never met a dog that pooped I tried yanking him to the grass when he starts to go but then he stops pooping so I stopped that. Any good ideas?
@vBulletinzz if you start to run away from him he should naturally follow, but you could practice it at home first, thats how i get my dog to follow me away from distractins, it might look a bit silly but its worth it
i would say yes but im not a pro... the thing is if you train them together they might just start running around each other and get distracted... well thats what i would say and that is what i do with my dogs
@kangkongnilaga There is a chance that training the two dogs together could cause problems as they might be a distraction to each other, however i always find it easier to train more than one dog at the same time, as, once one dog gets it, all the other dogs pick it up so much quicker as the dog that has already be taught the action/behaviour/trick provides a good example. Good luck!
I have been struggling with my bulldog on the leash since I got her from the Humane Society 3 weeks ago....always a power struggle and a big workout for my arms. I tried this tip and wow....what a dif...I also have been practicing the heel command and will continue! Thank you so much!
By and large, leash-pulling masks the real problem: without a leash you would probably be without a dog. It is indeed a sobering thought to think that most dogs prefer to forge ahead to sniff the grass or other dogs' rear ends than to walk by their owner's side. There are of course some dogs who simply don't want to walk beside people who keeping yanking the leash. However, regardless of why your dog pulls, all dogs need to be trained to walk nicely on leash.
Wait a minute..In the video it says to have a LOOSE LEASH(when walking) you just walk in another direction(Opposite direction likely)...But what if once you take your first step(to walk) & the dog runs ahead of you(leads to pulling)?
Do I keep going in the opposite direction(which may lead into small 3 feet long circles for the duration of the walk)?
@jbentley8383 lol i thought the same thing ....i was walking in circles and everyone looked at me like i was crazy haha....but it helped a lil bit after a whole hour = ( but the very next day he was pulling harder then normal so i thought mabey my dog thinks pulling me more would stop walking around in circles lmao
@jbentley8383 here's a good tip. With your dog on a lead make them sit on your left side. Give command 'heel' and walk forward. After 10 paces do a left about turn on the spot with your left leg leading the turn and walk back the way you came. Keep doing this until the dog gets the message and they will move out of your way just prior to the turn. They will learn to feel your left leg move first, prior to a turn. Always train in a small area and for no longer than 10 minutes.
Dear Eric Letendre, could you please write you email, ive been trying to mail you but i think i spelled the email wrong. Many thanks from David christensen, Denmark
my dog is so stubborn!!! she knows what she has to do but refuses! So frustrating, because even though I pretend like I'm the boss, she really is. When I turn my back on her it helps a little, and when I take away her food completely, then give her food in training sessions. Why can't she just be a good obedient dog?
Hey man love your videos. I'm having a real hard time trying to teach my puppy to walk on leash. I use her favorite treats that she goes crazy for on a regular basis, but as soon as I put on the leash and collar I get zero response. She just sits there, very stubborn and does not respond to anything, no movement. Any help is appreciated thank you.
You know what? My lil girl Pom has me trained really well. Going for a ride? I' m coming. Going to the bank, post office, or liquer store? I' m coming. They all know me. I pay for a happy meal, she doesn' t. I deposit my check. She gets a cookie. lol so be it. This little girl is my heart. She' s my buddy. She accepts me when no one else does. Nuff said.
i just need some advice please my dog is well behaved at home even around my kids but when it comes to walking him he just gets so excited he doesent calm down ive tried sitting there till he changes his state of mind but he just keeps jumping and getting excited for hours please help any advice is welcome
@evilspuddy u gotta start out with a bunch of little treats in ur hand and after every step they take next to you praise them and give them one of the small treats, eventually the dog will learn to just walk right next 2 u
Hey dude ur amazing im now looking to buy your training book but first i want to ask you a question.I baught a pupy and it is a Bouvier Bernois thata how it is called in french. when i go to walk with him , after 10 m out of the house area he sits don and refuse to walk any ferther. please help me. thanks verry much !
I hv a 8 yr 60 lb AMSTAFF female who is a great/vr smart-she is fixed but, had 1 litter prior to be getting here at 1.5 yrs old. She loves kitty cats & bunnies, ducks, etc.-- I wld love to be able to walk w/o leash but, fear that if she sees a squirrel, cat, dog, duck, etc. she will kp going til she can get it & no 1 can catch her she thinks u r plyg a game w/ her- if gotten loose-u hv to trick her w/ treats &/or walk away & sometimes she will follow - - possible to now train her w/o leash?
@mmackify Having a strong recall is step number one. If she won't come back she should never be allowed off leash. Some people aren't very friendly toward bully breeds especially and it wouldn't take much for someone to mistake her behavior for something it's not.
Thanks for the video.....As soon as I feel the tup or pull from the dog, I give a UH HO! and go in the other direction the dog is pulling. Praise the dog when they walk correct.. This may take a few times, but it works for me and the dog is learning the good behavior I want. The next time we walk, they do not pull. "Cheers"
In order to keep the leash loose I have to walk as fast as him, the faster I walk... the faster he walks. So it's really hard for me to keep a lose leash because he's constantly trying to walk faster than me. Lol and my dog attacks the vacuum haha.
@CerebralJezebel Dyson's turbo-powered upholstery tool is the one my Kelpie/Aussie Shepherd mix loves the best. She stands facing away from me, arches her back, and acts as if she's in heaven as I run the thing up and down her back. She absolutely loves the feel of the rotating brush. My lab tolerates being vacuumed but doesn't seem to like it much. My other two dogs just run when the vacuum is turned on as do the cats.
It sounds nuts but you can actually make a harness using your existing leash and it takes 3 seconds. I started using this trick with my doberman and whenever she pulls with the leash in the harness kind of thing she just sits down. They can't pull, seriously its awesome! Its been 4 days since I learned this and its a whole different world. I can give details send me a message or reply to this comment
my puppy loves the vacuum... it works well... she will lay down and enjoy it then roll over so i can do her belly... even tho there is no hair on her belly... she just loves it tho...
hah! mine too! We had to teach her though b/c she used to absolutely hate it. . . and now i can't vacuum w/o her coming up and lying next to me with a look of "please-vacuum me" lol
my standard poodle has been through obediance twice. she still pulls alot unless i have a treat. I really want her to just walk nice not for food but just cause. its like without a treat she knows nothing.
@darkchilde26 Are you holding the treat in your hand? If so, use a marker word or clicker instead so that you are getting the treat from a pocket instead. Then you can put the reinforcement on a schedule and reduce the number of treats you use.
@darkchilde26 In that case putting her on a schedule should be very straight-forward, but you need to teach "Doggy Zen" (google it). Sue Ailsby's Training Levels has a good progression for Doggy Zen.
If you view my video, eletendre1, you will see that I am much in need of your services for the dog next door. Unfortunately the Zen approach only had temporary results!
My pitbull does the opposite. If I use slack he starts to pull. If I hold tension he stays next to me. When He pulls I tug a bit and he slows back down but We're still working on it.
@MyBigDingaLing : It's good that you're working on it. It can be really frusterating. The first couple walks it took me like 10 minutes to travel 1/2 a block. Sounds like your dog just needs reminders here and there. But try to use a WORD to remind him, instead of a tug. If you have to tug, you should STOP also...so he learns that he wont get anywhere unless YOU are leader. I have ZERO tolerance with my puppy, so that he doesn't get confused. It's work in progress tho!
a quick tug should be a correction to snap him into it. a consistent tension should be applied until he starts moving with you. the tension should be released when his/her mind is read to follow you, that is generally when they take a step towards you. if you have a puppy its different. you have to use his/her nose to make him/her follow you
Great video, but, what to do with those dogs that have a high prey-instinct and constantly pull when out on a walk, on the lookout for squirrels, cats, etc.? The ones who are far more interested in seeing and chasing things than the handler?
my bulldogs just dont care about pulling her back i am trying for more than a year rght now.... my doberman walks perfekt. my bulldog just when i regularly argue
I think the tips on loose leash walking make total sense. I am going to try that tonight. My dog is powerful and always seems to want to go faster than I do. I often stop and wait until she calms down before we proceed. I thought for sure she just had to be boss on walks. The reflex pressure thing is key... Thanks and I will report back.
I am a fellow dog trainer. Dude you are cool. I love loose leash walking, i remember the first time I took my dog walking. It took me 20 minutes just to start actually walking, she's a pit that loves squriels! Now, I can lay her leash on her back and she walks down the street with me. If she gets distracted, I make a sound or command and she comes back. Loose leash walking lowers heart pressure, I am sure of it!
HELP! i need training tips or you can show me how, i want her to learn tricks like sit, paw, lay down, stand, crawl, etc. and also a training to make him walk with me(no leash), potty training etc... please help me!
This will work with Rotties? Cause in another video the guy got his attention and eye contact before walking him. The dog had his eyes on the owner the whole time they were walking. Also, my other question: If you need a loose leash but the dog is pulling, how can you change direction like you said if the dog pulls away from you?
I have a Rottie and the way I trained her to walk on a loose leash is as soon as she started to get ahead of me, not even pulling yet, I turned around and went in the opposite direction slightly jerking the leash to make sure she follows my lead. Do that every time you walk your dog, eventually it will catch on. My dog walks right next to me or even slightly behind me. I never used choke collars, or anything inhumane to train. Eventually it will realize you're in charge and follow your lead.
i would rather do it this way, i don't want to train my dog to NOT look forward; curbs, bikes, etc.
it works for our amstaff just fine and when mine pulls, i stop. over time i use a word, turn, and with the leash loose, he turns around just fine. good luck
This is true. Walking a friend's rottie i realized she's MUCH better behaved when there's slack on the leash. It's all about trusting your dog to not pull.
Don't use retractable leashes! They offer no control in pulling your dog away. I was bitten last month from behind by a dog on one of those twenty-foot retractable leashes. Use a real leash!
what if i have one of those flexi cord retractable leashes??
i live in a small guarded neighborhood and it takes about 15 minutes to walk all around the neighborhood. i have a 2 year old male maltese and i use one of those retractable leashes. does that work? or should i get a regular leash??
just for a tip if you have a small dog buy it a harness my dog sliped out of its collar then got hit by a car but if you put the collar tight on them it messes up their throat
also anyone wanting to practice this remember you must practice in a low distraction area (like your living room ,or backyard) if dog is distracted by everything around him then you won't get his attention....
we have 2 amstaffs and when its walking time its non stop pulling its ok for me i can controll there strenght but my wife and my daughter cant talk them for a walk because they are pulling all the time ill give this a go i hope it works with a 15 mth old and a 11mth old amstaff
I have an Alaskan Malamute who pulls me to no end when walking, and I can figure out how to break her of this. Ive tried everything! Any pointers on how I can break her of this? It seems her attention is on everything but me when we are out.

clove86 1 year ago
In order to keep the leash loose I have to walk as fast as him, the faster I walk... the faster he walks. So it's really hard for me to keep a lose leash because he's constantly trying to walk faster than me. Lol and my dog attacks the vacuum haha.

HaHa!!! Oh, that's awesome!! Love it!!
gwanagwanagwana 1 year ago
LMAO The pug and the vacuum that's hilarious. My dog barks and chases our vacuum so yeah...not happening for us lol
the pug sure seemed to be enjoying that - do not attempt that with a dyson!
CerebralJezebel 1 year ago

I can give details send me a message or reply to this comment

my standard poodle has been through obediance twice. she still pulls alot unless i have a treat. I really want her to just walk nice not for food but just cause. its like without a treat she knows nothing.
darkchilde26 2 years ago
@darkchilde26 Are you holding the treat in your hand? If so, use a marker word or clicker instead so that you are getting the treat from a pocket instead. Then you can put the reinforcement on a schedule and reduce the number of treats you use.
positivepetzine 2 years ago
nope the treats are in my pocket but then she trys to rip my pocket out.shes exstreamly food driven. and she wont respond to anything else.
darkchilde26 2 years ago
@darkchilde26 In that case putting her on a schedule should be very straight-forward, but you need to teach "Doggy Zen" (google it). Sue Ailsby's Training Levels has a good progression for Doggy Zen.

It's work in progress tho!
jessweetca 2 years ago
a quick tug should be a correction to snap him into it. a consistent tension should be applied until he starts moving with you. the tension should be released when his/her mind is read to follow you, that is generally when they take a step towards you. if you have a puppy its different. you have to use his/her nose to make him/her follow you

Great video, but, what to do with those dogs that have a high prey-instinct and constantly pull when out on a walk, on the lookout for squirrels, cats, etc.? The ones who are far more interested in seeing and chasing things than the handler?

I think the tips on loose leash walking make total sense. I am going to try that tonight. My dog is powerful and always seems to want to go faster than I do. I often stop and wait until she calms down before we proceed. I thought for sure she just had to be boss on walks. The reflex pressure thing is key... Thanks and I will report back.
mustards12s 2 years ago
I am a fellow dog trainer. Dude you are cool. I love loose leash walking, i remember the first time I took my dog walking. It took me 20 minutes just to start actually walking, she's a pit that loves squriels! Now, I can lay her leash on her back and she walks down the street with me. If she gets distracted, I make a sound or command and she comes back. Loose leash walking lowers heart pressure, I am sure of it!

This will work with Rotties? Cause in another video the guy got his attention and eye contact before walking him. The dog had his eyes on the owner the whole time they were walking. Also, my other question: If you need a loose leash but the dog is pulling, how can you change direction like you said if the dog pulls away from you?
musicchick581 2 years ago
I have a Rottie and the way I trained her to walk on a loose leash is as soon as she started to get ahead of me, not even pulling yet, I turned around and went in the opposite direction slightly jerking the leash to make sure she follows my lead. Do that every time you walk your dog, eventually it will catch on. My dog walks right next to me or even slightly behind me. I never used choke collars, or anything inhumane to train. Eventually it will realize you're in charge and follow your lead.
aniakrysia 2 years ago
i would rather do it this way, i don't want to train my dog to NOT look forward; curbs, bikes, etc.
it works for our amstaff just fine and when mine pulls, i stop. over time i use a word, turn, and with the leash loose, he turns around just fine. good luck
Ventrimac 2 years ago
This is true. Walking a friend's rottie i realized she's MUCH better behaved when there's slack on the leash. It's all about trusting your dog to not pull.

Don't use retractable leashes! They offer no control in pulling your dog away. I was bitten last month from behind by a dog on one of those twenty-foot retractable leashes. Use a real leash!
ForbinColossus 2 years ago
what if i have one of those flexi cord retractable leashes??
i live in a small guarded neighborhood and it takes about 15 minutes to walk all around the neighborhood. i have a 2 year old male maltese and i use one of those retractable leashes. does that work? or should i get a regular leash??
itsssannie 2 years ago
just for a tip if you have a small dog buy it a harness my dog sliped out of its collar then got hit by a car but if you put the collar tight on them it messes up their throat
lugassy8 2 years ago 2
Yea, but a harness give a dog total control...you can use a training collar (choke chain) they cant slip out

Just be sure that in that SMALL tiny instant, you praise the dog TIMING IS KEY! Eventually the slack time will increase and become easier to praise.

martingale collar for htlaeh12
lojo152000 2 years ago
my dog starts pulling backwards and ends up pulling out of her collar, what would you suggest to do for that?
htlaeh12 2 years ago 2
get a non-slip collar also known as a martingale or combo collar.....then your dog can't slip out of it....
mommyofone66 2 years ago 2
also anyone wanting to practice this remember you must practice in a low distraction area (like your living room ,or backyard) if dog is distracted by everything around him then you won't get his attention....
mommyofone66 2 years ago

I have an Alaskan Malamute who pulls me to no end when walking, and I can figure out how to break her of this. Ive tried everything! Any pointers on how I can break her of this? It seems her attention is on everything but me when we are out.
