  • Dont tan EXCESSIVELY and you wont get cancer, in other words use your common sense.

  • so glad im black....

  • @blaxomega Thats prolly the reason some people are racist is because they're jealous that you dont need to get a tan!

  • @xGummiBearr lol

  • CELINE!!!!!

    U ROCK

  • @coldgyn Yeah because cdn derms are really struggling for business right now and not overloaded or anything. It's not the specialty with the longest wait time..

    what's ur medical background sir?

  • @RachelAnn77 The beautiful thing about science it's that there is no middle point. So I do understand what you are trying to say. Melanin is not an immune system? I state on my post "teach us something" I really mean this, I am not afraid to say "I don't know". You are saying to have moderated Sun exposure, but stay away from artificial UVR? Can I fix a headache with an aspirin? Can I fix Vitamin D levels with a tanning bed?

  • @tetefourtyniners Melanin (the form relavent to this discussion, there are several) is a derivative of an AA produced in response to DNA DAMAGE in an effort to protect against FURTHER DNA damage. It is not an "immunity system" in itself. Can aspirin cure a headache? Depends on the cause of the headache. Can VitD levels be maintained in a tanning bed? Yes, but are there much smarter, safer ways that do not include dramatically increasing one's risk of contracting skin cancer? Absofreakinglutely!

  • When it comes to your healthcare, get your advice from your doctors not unqualified people in the tanning industry, most of who have no background in even the most basic science and aren't even remotely qualified to interpret an article in a scientific journal.

  • The human species has been under the Ultraviolet Light Radiation for thousands of years. Yet we haven't extinguished. As humans we are equiped with melanin and there is a reason why. Avoiding the sun and applying chemical sunscreen just helps killing your inmunity system to resist the sun. Who will come out and teach people to identify your skin type and based on skin type, the time you can stay in the sun without getting hurt? Derms? Come on, teach us something.

  • @tetefourtyniners Nobody is saying say out of the sun period, derms are saying be sensible in the sun and avoid cancer coffins. And yes your doctor/ nurse is the person best equipped to advise you on how long it is safe to stay under the sun and in what conditions.

And take an immunology class before you go spouting off about the immune system. And no, the bs online diplomas they hand out in the tanning industry aren't worth anything.

  • This is really an all time low. My daughters derm wanted to remove a mole and he said he would just code it as suspect for cancer so it got paid for. I was so disgusted that an MD was capable of being this dishonest and showing my daughter what a role model is with lying. I passed. I really have figured out it is all about economics and they use these tactics to to fill coffers. The sun is a natural process to our bodies. Your drugs are NOT. Nice checks you guys get from the Pharms by the way.

  • A May 2010 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute listed melanoma as one of five cancers over-diagnosed by doctors. Though doctors are removing more and more skin lesions, researchers pointed out that melanoma mortality rates haven't increased since 1975--with insurance companies paying for the procedures.

  • A 2009 British Journal of Dermatology report also concluded: that melanoma isn't increasing in actual incidence, but merely in reported incidence. What the report found was doctors were simply reporting and removing more lesions that may not actually be cancerous.

  • Would this explain why the United States has just 4.5 percent of the world's population but has 52 percent of the world's melanomas when you compare the American Cancer Society's numbers (68,720) with those from the World Health Organization (132,000 worldwide)? In contrast, both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer have been declining in Canada. A University of Alberta study this year showed that non-melanoma skin cancer incidence in Canada has been declining for a generation.

  • Riddle me this: how is it possible the U.S. estimates more-than-triple while Canada's real numbers are actually declining? Has the U.S. dermatology-induced media scare propagated more dermatologist visits in our for-profit health care system or are a larger number of Canadians simply staying inside to watch their beloved championship curling teams?

  • Saying UV exposure (including tanning beds) causes cancer is like saying water drowns you. It's an exaggeration and a scare tactic. Shame on all of the medical "professionals" spinning this propaganda. Funny how some MDs claim tanning will kill you while others recommend their patients to tan to help with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis & most importantly vitamin D deficiency which can be prevented by PROPER UV exposure and prevent far more cancer deaths than melanoma has ever caused.

  • @lifehasmestumped: You got most of it right. excessive UV exposure COULD be a factor in skin cancers, even though enviroment, diet, lifestyle, genetics amoung other factors could also contribute. But it's easy to just blame indoor tanning beds. And tanning beds are not giant toasters. They are a controlled enviroment of UV exposure just like walking outside with a timer on. The key is here is moderation. Of course your gonna get people that overdo it with anything. But this ad is brutal.

  • This shows the mentality of so-called professionals that are dermatologists. Why? Because they have no REAL studies to show the indoor tanning is creating more skin cancers but the more people they can scare the more business for them. I bet the CDA gets a big fat donation from companies that make SPF lotions like Tropicana, Johnson and Johnson and so on. As long as everyone is percieved to be hurting themselves scare tactics like this keep the Dermotoligitst and SPF lotion companies rich.

  • @Natureboy71 I don't know if there are any studies that directly link tanning booths to skin cancer. But there is proof that skin cancer is caused by excessive UV exposure which is what u get when u lie down in tanning beds. It's like a giant toaster oven 4 humans. Besides dermatologists aren't like plastic surgeons telling u ur nose isn't right for ur face, they want people 2 avoid these machines so they DON'T see u in their offices. They have years of medical training, how much do u have?

  • I diagnose many skin cancers in my dermatology practice. Unfortunately, young people are developing skin cancers at an increasing rate, likely due to tanning bed usage. This is a great video, & the comparison to frying your skin with a toaster or waffle iron is amusing & fairly accurate, except that a tanning bed is in fact even more dangerous to your health.

  • @larrybirdbb On the one hand, we hear dermatologists stating the incubation period is 10, 20, or 30 years, on the other hand we have comments such as "young people are developing skin cancers at an increasing rate, likely due to tanning bed usage". Which is it?

What accounts for the fact that based on info from the CDC, the greatest increase in melanoma incidence over the past decade involves middle age men (the least likely demographic to use tanning salons).

  • shutup.

  • The study done by Canadian doctors examined 3,101 breast cancer victims and 3, 471 healthy women who have not suffered from the tumor. They were each asked how much time they spent outdoors during their teens, twenties, thirties, forties and fifties. The patients were all between the ages of 60 to 74. Those who spent at least 21 hours a week outside during their teens were 29% less likely to get cancer than those who spend only 1 hour a day. (French Tribune Reporting Today) Don't Sunburn! :)

  • @gsonetwork Do you know what "not getting sunburn means?" It means your skin has given up. That's how damaged it is.

  • @gsonetwork I'd rather go to a dermatologist than lay down in a giant toaster oven. Oh and just because you haven't gone red doesn't mean you might not get skin cancer. I bet you'd see a dermatologist then.

  • A tan is actually a sign of skin damage. It does not have to be a burn to indicate skin damage. I like this ad. As a pale skin woman, I am tired of those who tell me to tan.

  • @gsonetwork REALLY? Arguing that tanning doesn't pose health risks is like arguing that smoking doesn't affect your health negatively. COME ON! Everyone knows that tanning beds are dangerous! Even the tanning salons post warnings on their beds! It is our decision as responsible adults to heed these warnings or go ahead and take the risk. Being educated about the dangers of ANYTHING we do to our bodies is part of being a responsible adult. Also, nobody is arguing about skin cream here.

  • @StEpHiE2019 Agreed. I guess the issue is whether we should consider tanning being available only for adults. We don't allow a teenager of 15 to vote or drink but we are fine if they go to a tanning salon every day of the year and fry. Something to consider.

  • This video features three of MIM's young models : Celine, Emily D and Caroline M. Great job everyone!

  • Great video! Though indoor tanning isn't healthy, neither is outdoor.
