One word Linux ... All you really have to tell people is use Linux Mint or one of the over 700 free Linux distribution , because most software in Linux is FREE. Linux doesn't need anti-virus software .
However I don't see any problem using pirated software . Life is to short not to enjoy the best things in life for free, and If I could download a car I would.
Only use Free or Open Source software and art(music or movies) or use online radio.
