In many ways this scene is amazing simply because it evokes the emotions from 2 opposite ends of the spectrum. In one regard its sad simply because its easy to sympathize with Tom, atleast from a guys perspective, since many of us know how painful it is to have to embrace the finality of a love that was never fully there, or one sided. On the other end, I think the fact that Summer realizes that Tom was right in regards to true love is really nice, and that we can all take solice in knowing that

I usually hate love movies but I totally loved this one. It's SO true about everything. I mean, I can see this happening. Love is not always perfect and it doesn't always last for ever. It's a very sincere, cute, interesting and entertaining movie.

Summer is not playing with his emotions, she still cares for Tom which is why she even bothers to put herself through a potentially awkward and emotionally charged conversation to make right with a former ex distraught about her recent marriage. Summer is the sort of character also is always up front about her emotions and her feelings, which is why she is so blunt throughout the movie especially now. I say this because holding his hand or dancing with him is not the point of the scene.

I think that through all the pain and anguish we (the audience) feel on behalf of Tom, the fact that I don't despise Summer in this scene is a credit to immense work done by Zoe Deschanel.
I'm a guy and it's kinda hard to hold a grudge against her. Nothing is for certain and I think that's the horrible thing about relationships. You have things in common, you come into each others lives, but there's always that lingering feeling that it's not for good. There's no assurance of permanence, despite having things in common, and having fun. Lightning could strike, and chance meetings with others could work against you.

Summer is not playing with his emotions, she still cares for Tom which is why she even bothers to put herself through a potentially awkward and emotionally charged conversation to make right with a former ex distraught about her recent marriage. Summer is the sort of character also is always up front about her emotions and her feelings, which is why she is so blunt throughout the movie especially now. I say this because holding his hand or dancing with him is not the point of the scene.

I do get her character in the way you've described, but that still doesn't change the fact that, despite however she felt, she knew full well that when she danced with him he was totally in love with her still and she continued on doing it anyway. Why? Because he made her feel good and it made her feel good to be in that situation, even though she knew he was still crazy about her. It was emotionally irresponsible of her & deliberate.

@blah11blah I'm not saying she's heartless she's just an impulsive and selfish person to put him in a situation, time and time again, where she knew he was going to take a fall. The dancing with him, is part of the point of the scene, because he doesn't understand why she would even let him have the false hope that dancing with someone who's giving you the full-on googly eyes does. It's creating false hope, that she knows is false, and she does it anyway. Because "she wanted to."

I saw this movie even forgot the last scenen now ı saw again ,when ı saw this movie I been through a though relation close to this one ,and learned my lesson ,that is ,never lose your logic when you fall in love with someone, dont tie yourself only to 1 woman ,first make her love you so much than you can love her ,these type of cunts with hidden agenda is the most dangerous ones.they are like foxes walking on the snow but lose thier tracks.

What's unfortunate is that this is only part of the story...this is the movie world...but in the real world cunts like Summer Finn get their comeuppance for wrecking good men. In the final credits it should've stated
"Summer was divorced within 3 months...she's now in City X pulling the same shit with another great guy until some new douchebag comes along and she ends up marrying him on a whim...and getting divorced again...this cycle will repeat itself and Summer will never learn her lesson"

The worst thing she did was not tell him she was with someone else before he got to the party.It's heartless cos she knew how much he cared for her and is actually something someone tried to do to me,except i knew better so i avoided the situation but i found out later that he had planned that . I would never do that to someone and it shocked me that people actually do it. Also why do people come back , just leave someone alone . Like why did she take his god damn bench !! I'm a guy and it's kinda hard to hold a grudge against her. Nothing is for certain and I think that's the horrible thing about relationships. You have things in common, you come into each others lives, but there's always that lingering feeling that it's not for good. There's no assurance of permanence, despite having things in common, and having fun. Lightning could strike, and chance meetings with others could work against you.

i used to hate this part, like wtf why would u leave joseph-gordon levitt?? who'd be psycho enough? but looking through it as normal people, "what she was never sure of" was a nice way to say, i didn't like what you liked, we didn't have many things in common in the end. the guy would obviously not see this, that's why his cut is deeper. poor thing, but that's just how life is, it wouldn't be easy for the girl to initiate the break up im sure she knew she would break his heart..

I hate all other movies that try to make love seem so go happy perfect! Because think about it.... in a romance movie, one of the people has a secret, likes another person. They are happy together. Then the person finds their secret. They break up... then the person tries to win the other one back. Happy unrealistic cliche ending.
