The slow reload times, short range, and horrible accuracy meant they were only effective in mass volleys that could only be achieved by both sides standing like that. It wasn't until around the Civil War and the subsequent decades that guns began to get advanced enough that these tactics began costing way to many lives to be effective. The large death toll in the Civil War is because of these dated tactics, for instance.

actually thats pretty much how battles went since the rifles they used were pretty inaccurate...except for the assault rifle. that was VERY accurate. The rifles they used, when they shot, had the bullet bounce in the barrel so it wouldnt always go where they wanted it so they would get very close, fire, reload, then start swinging at each other
