I have been practicing this for about 1/2 hour now. I can get the actual knot each and every time but no matter how much longer I make the wide part it is either coming up too short or about 4 inches past the narrrow end. I'm not that tall (5'11 6") so its probably not that I bought a short tie...any body have any suggestions? Are you supposed to be pulling it tight each step? Maybe I'm putting too much slack in each step?

Haven't been able to figure this one out until this vid...thanks! Been doing the half-windsor for the past 15 years. You have to go a lot shorter with the narrow end to get the right length on the finished product...I'm 6'3" and I had the narrow end about 3-4 inches from my collar at the start.
