For f's sake what is it with youtube commenters? If an artist covers a song by another artist IT IS NOT A COMPETITION. The original has not been burnt shredded and buried in a hole in the ground...YOU CAN STILL LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL. Bowie is not competing with Lennon, he's paying a sincere tribute to his dead friend. Anyone with ears should be able to enjoy Lennon's version and appreciate the extra dimensions that Bowie finds in the song. A good song is indestructible.
@TheFpuff No. Bowie's mother was a pain in the arse but she never left him. And Bowie adored his father who died when he was beginning to have some success and that man supported and loved his son deeply. So yes, not enough pain from inside, but yet a remarkable rendition.
i finally know why Bowie may have picked this song. His step brother Terry was an illegitimate child and never had love from Bowie's mother really or David's father. Terry eventually committed suicide. I could be wrong, but it seems the best explination.
Fudge me! This is really something (no Beatle pun intended). When did he do this? & Penny Lane too!!? I've missed something haven't I ? Sounds like Reeves on lead.
If I recall correctly, David's mom (Margaret Mary "Peggy " Barnes - Jones) passed away in an exclusive nursing home in London in 2001. She was 84 years old.
Where and how did you find this? Also, why wasn't this song used on that John Lennon tribute album everyone's been mentioning? This is a very good cover of the song. One of music's greats covering a song from a master musician...awesome.
I'm going to try this again. Last one didn't post. Yes, the Beatles changed history. However, to many, the Beatles just didn't have the voices. They sounded like my elementary school choir. I don't mean to offend any Beatle fan. They were good but their voices just wasn't there. I like a voice with power and emotion and Bowie displays that in this song. The music, the voice, it really brings the true suffering of this song to life. Hats off to Bowie. Beautifully done.
This is phenominal!!! I love this song and I love Bowie singing it. I have had people comment to me that Lennon's version was better. That this is Lennon's song. I don't mean to offend any Lennon or Beatle fan but for me the Beatles were too whiney. They sounded like a bunch of ...girls. I'm sorry but I can't think of a better word to discribe their voices. Bowie's version packs some punch with a strong and powerful voice that shows a lot of unrepressed emotion. I love it!!
I love this song and Bowie does this version with class and in great taste as well. Man this is amazing! I liked the "daddy daddy daddy come home!!!". A little Lennon homage right there. Fine work.
Correction. Bowie sings Lennon. You don't know how pissed off John would be if he saw one of HIS songs labeled as "Beatles". Not cool.

Quick correction, Mother is a Lennon song, no George Paul and Ringo
Kreason95 2 months ago
@Kreason95 Actually, you mean no George or Paul. Ringo played drums on the Lennon original. :)

The video says this song is by the Beatles... but it's not? Pretty sure it's from John Lennon's solo output

I don t like this cover. Don t like his voice acrobatics on this one, it ruins the song IMHO. His cover of Pennylane is much better!

@15275657 Thanks for the info. I'm assuming David paid for best care for his mother at the end. I hope there was a reconciliation.

The thing is, the voice in Penny Lane covered by "David Bowie" doesn't really sound like him. This does. x

Mr. Bowie has a voice with so many dimensions that it is impossible to classify it.
This is why he has lasted as long as he has.
Of course being one of the greatest and most original artists in the world helps too.
I only hope that we have not heard the last of this man, because that would be the greatest shame ever !!
DinoLucca1 2 years ago 45
@DinoLucca1 I don t like all its dimensions.
