The only songwriter i know of who applied the discipline of jazz to the writing of song lyrics. I used to think that Nick's lyrics lyrics were mostly meaningless, with each verse of most of his songs lacking meaning within the larger context of the song; then i realised that for him writing lyrics was more about amplifying the emotional impact of each phase of the progression - he wrote lyrics in the same way a jazz musician writes a melody.
listen when he sings "betty prayed today for the sky to blow away" how the string section is played. i think it symbolizes wild wind and stormy weather approaching.
The irony is that the bloke who wrote that incredibly beautiful string arangement had a top ten UK hit with Hoots Mon There's a Moose Loose Aboot This Hoose.
Recorded live with the string section in a semi circle in front of him at Sound Techniques. What you hear is what was recorded on the 4 track. Unbelievable.
I love to liten to this after Kayaking on the Susquehanna...oh and by the way fuck gas fracking they want to ruin my beautiful Endless mountains all so us Americans maintain our wasteful life style!!!!
such a shameful waste of an amazing artist he came to early if he were around today he woud have been much more successful. he was like a star in a city night sky
my favourite nick drake song. so british in its weather references and concerns and how that effects your mood. i love when the violins come in,its like a clearing sky.
Nicks first album 'Five Leaves Left' which included this song sold just 5000 copies during Nick's lifetime.

clay huts? hey, better than teepees. technology is magic and devilry, but my people (white, European descent) are coming to terms with it.

Nick Drakes music gets better with age. This is one of the most beautifully written melancholy songs I have ever heard.

@miceskin ...No he didn't, Jeff Buckley did. Nick Drake died of an overdose of antidepressants.
