I cried through the entire video. It was like yesterday when as a young child was so disappointed to see her leave. I was so ready for bed by the time Carol would sing her song. My Dad would carry me to bed and tuck me in. I'm about to turn 49 years old now. Carol, we all miss you, and the rest of the gang so much. Television had it right back then. You are amazing.
@Biggerbyte Gosh if you are almost 49 now I sure hope when you fell asleep back in 78 watching this your dad woke you up and made you walk to bed. You would have been 16. : )
And amazingly enough...that same studio Carol Burnett called home for all those years...is now called...the Bob Barker Studios where The Price is Right is now taped.
I'm fully comfortable in my manhood when I say that I lose it when she starts singing and her voice starts to crack. T.V. just isn't the same without her on it!
You have all hit it on the nail. Carol made us all laugh, but her crew was her "family".. I felt so bad for her when her daughter died. Anyone remember the TV show "Fame"? Her daughter was on that show. Now this was true TV~~~
So I'm a 42 year old African American man now. At the time this aired I was 9 years old. I Can't Tell You How Much I LOVED this woman and in some ways mother.
I felt to close to her. It's so good to see this footage again!
As good a place as any to do it - I'd like to thank Carol and the gang for teaching the younger me, without my ever realizing it, how to be funny and spread that cheer too! :-)
@kelleyladydj i agree 100 percent.carol ,harvey ,tim, and vickie were like family . those days were so inocent and full of happiness for so many.i wish i could turn back the hands of time and go back to that special time. tv was so much better and family friendly.why can"t things be that way again.
I actually cried. I love The Carol Burnett show so much! I'd never seen this finale until today, and it made me really sad. This was, to me, the best show on television.
A great look at the large stage of the Bob Barker Studio (20 years before it was named the Bob Barker Studio). Carol exits through the same big stage door where prizes and games are brought into the studio for "The Price is Right".
Finally after 32 years I can watch this without crying like a crazy teenager. I was so hysterical the night this show aired. Thanks for letting me relive the moment.
I grew up watching this show, will always be one of the greatest shows of all time I will always have happy memories of family watching and laughing together.
The first time I saw the Carol Burnett show, was over 20 years after it went off the air as reruns. And I feel in love with it at the age of 8. Carol became my female TV idol. The show was great in that it included not only pop culture from that time, but also things that have stood the test of time today. I am glad that Carol was able to share her comedic genius with the rest of the world.
My kids also love laughing along with these shows. I told my daughter that the reason I liked watching them so much is because they aren't afraid to make mistakes and when they do they build on it and make it part of the show. Thanks for all the laughs we had watching all of you have fun and for letting us have fun with you.
I haven't seen this since it was first broadcasted and tonight I feel the same emotions I felt back then. It was like your best friend moving away. Carol Burnett will always hold a special place in my heart. Even though I've never met her, I truly love this woman!
I remember watching it to, I was about twelve, in fact we never missed it, I had to be in on Saturday night when the street lights came on, that was my que to come in to the house to get my bath, and then we would watch Carol Burnet. This show makes me feel very good, and that I recall my mother and father who are now gone. BTW, this show aired two days before my fathers 50Th. Birthday which was March 31st. ! The Mary Tyler Moore show also ended in 78" as well, that was a big good by to.
This show was my moms favorite. We use to watch it together. This grown man is not ashamed to say that I am writing this comment thru eyes full of tears. Thank you for the laughs Carol. I love you and so did my mom.
Carol Burnett has been such a class act her entire career. She's a very talented entertainer from her beginning on Broadway in "Once Upon a Mattress" throughout her television show, making all our lives so much more enriching. It's a shame that now all we're left with untalented women depending on the "f word" and sexual references to entertain a young and naive audience, a poor state of affairs that somehow IS passing itself off as comedy.
WOW. I had no idea that this footage was even around, or that they did this kind of 'Last Show' format for the finale. Just....wow. Truly amazing. And her walking off the sound stage makes it that much more heartwrenching - that the production was in fact being put to bed for the infinitely long nap. There's always the reruns, but they're never quite the same.
@JP5466 Who would've thought that Vicki Lawrence would be playing Mama Harper again 5 years later in Mama's Family, Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, Betty White would make appearances, and it's the funniest show ever in the 80's.
I'm sitting here in tears after just viewing this clip...same as I did when I watched it with my mother and grandmother 32 years ago when I was 8 years old. I haven't seen it since the original broadcast. Glad to see I'm in good company. Bottom line: there will NEVER be another Carol Burnett!
Pure magic. I was a CB devotee for almost all 11 years. And I watched this series finale in 1978 and cried with a smile on my face right along with everyone else in America. Watching this again at 47 gives me special nostalgic emotions: watching the cast all depart, followed by the moving departures of Harvey, Vicki, and Tim (note the extra long embraces of Vicki and Tim, as well as the autograph signings). Closing monologue was a dream. The CBS was, in a word, pure class.
Wow!! I remember being a small child with watch this final episode with my mom and siblings. We cried like babies that night. I will treasure those memories forever.
They just don't have talent like this anymore. this is a bygone era. I remember gathering with my family at our house in Brooklyn, NY every Saturday night at 10:00 pm on CBS channel 2 so we could watch these great shows. These people are not only incredibly talented and funny but really genuine in their affection for one another. R.I.P. Harvey Korman.
how funny. I am from Brooklyn and during the summer, different families on our block would roll out the portable TV on Saturday night and all the neighbors would watch CBS together, from the Mary Tyler Moore Show through Carol Burnett. It was a ritual.
I don't care what anyone says. I may never be in the acting or film business but from what I've seen and what I know...
11 years worth of shows.. Everyone making it happen is family. Carol Burnett Show, M*A*S*H, and The Golden Girls are all examples of shows where everyone was family. Heck even the cast and crew of Harry Potter seem like a family now. TV has it's perks now day along with movies but... shows like The Carol Burnett Show were the best, ever.
Just last night I'm flicking through the channels and there is nothing on tv with humor creativity and just plain entertainment. I said to my wife I wish there was a show on like the Carol Burnett show. What a shame. So I put in an Andy Griffith show tape. Oh well maybe TV will change, I really hope so.
Why can't television produce anything like this now? Instead of fun and creativity, we are bombarded by "reality" shows that seem to value conflict and negativity.
I don't think we will ever see a talent of Carol Burnett's caliber on television again....
Thank you so much for posting this. I remember when this aired. I was 13 and our family had watched the show weekly for years. I remember crying when she sang the final song. It was like an era of my own life had ended.
It must be something that resonates with those of us in our 40's. I too remember being a kid sitting with my brother and sister on the pull out couch in our pj's watching the CB Show and our sides hurt and tears in our eyes from laughing so hard. Thank so much for posting this. Wonderful memories.
I am a 43 year old Grandfather who is weeping as I remember watching this episode as a 12 year old boy with my big sister. Thank you for sharing this with us.
This blew me away! I DO recall this episode, but don't have to much memory of it. Saturday nights were my favorite because I enjoyed watching this show with the family. How she even sang that song without breaking down is amazing. Carroll Burnett IS a class act all the way! I miss shows like this
