@jalucool If you are refering to what I think you are, it's called a layshaft & it helps throttle up the locomotive if it starts cold or something like that.
@dtiydr there are 8 four cell batteries, totaling 64 volts. the low voltage system on a locomotive runs at 74 volts to charge the batteries. All electric start EMDs have 2 separate 30 volt electric starters weighing about 80 pounds each connected in series with the batteries on cranking. I forget the weight of the batteries, but I know we change them with electric hoists and position them with pry bars.
@Eggrollfaceass Just isane. I thought thought that a higher voltage was used to get current draw down becase it had to be freaking huge at start even at 64V but thick copper bars would handle that though.
Is it only the older EMDs that have the vapor vents? I recall having to open these vents on each individual cylinder and cranking the engine a few times to clear any possible condensation before actually starting the engines. I take it that's not the case with more modern locomotives?
@ke4cpc This one had the purge-start feature.... Purge-start limits starting rpms to 50 or so for 2-3 seconds (purges water through the exhaust valves) and then it fires for idle speed. Its a railroad-ordered option. Personally I prefer the blow-down cocks myself, can actually see whats blown out and if its all out.
The greatest sound in the known universe. I That engine's got so much growl, it overloads the camera microphone! Loved seeing you lay on the throttle; I want to do that more than anything else. (Came real close to doing it on the 16-567C in an SD9!)
Looks familar. I can see the govenor trying to work the throttle which is why you reached for it. I had to do that every time we started our NW2 with an EMD12V567A. The starter is quiter than ours when we energized motor windings on the main generator.
If you want different sound, why not open the compression/drain cocks while turning over. It will sound like heavy breathing. We had to do that when the engine hadn't been run for a while to purge any water that might be in the cylinders.
Great to see. Sometime, could you walk us through the entire process; electrical, water flush, prime, start, etc, and explain the sequence, right up to moving the engine? Thanks
POWER! man just hearing that engine run makes me want to become an engineer even more! good job revving that engine up, love that sound. keep up the good work man, hope you do more videos like these.

@omegaroad the alternator that powers the traction motors would recharge them aftre the engine is started.
