It's quite the phenomenon that we are moving into a world of education without walls. I seem them as barriers with a hint the authoritarian (as a teacher in front of a huge class educates in a start-to-finish manner that works well in the first 12 years of learning, but not well in advanced education. On the web, everyone seems to self-organize, each with a piece of information that is like a puzzle peace that comes together by concerted group effort to arrive at more thorough examination.
