the first show I went to was at the berkeley square 4/20/95. They filmed a video that day but never saw it. but it was bad ass and they bought like 50 fat slice pizzas to give to the audience after the show. then we got stoned in peoples park. what a great day
When AFI was still punk they ruled. But arguably today they aren't "emo" a common misconception. They're more like generic-sounding, mainstream, over-marketed, mass-produced shit. There is some excellent emo out there, like Cap' n Jazz.
i heard that if you rewind this song theres a hidden instrumental track called No Dave Party...if so where can i hear it? does any one know? please tell me...i must know...
I just "love" how bands can't mature and evolve without being dissed all to hell. Makes me be real proud to be a music fan. Grow the fuck up people. I doubt if you went up to Davey and called him a sellout he would give two shits and suddenly "repent" and make AFI into a one-trick punk pony.
And plus they've been playing music since 1989 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) so they've been playing music for twenty years. How much have you changed over the course of twenty years? I haven't even been alive twenty years but I can surely count on being a different person twenty years from now. I agree with Greendayfanatic, you all need to grow up. And I'm not saying you should like their new music because that would make me a hypocrite, I'm saying that you should stop whining about it.
Yeah, I don't like their new stuff as much but they aren't forcing me to listen to it. And at least they aren't like those people who never change anything about their music for the whole entire time they write it because they aren't creative enough to expand. They may have been more underground then but you can't call them sellouts because they almost definitely knew they were gonna lose about as many fans as they would gain when they progressed like they did.
I loved this group. And the old group before jade came in. I loved the group before jade and hunter came in. But guess what, i like the new group with jade and hunter. Just different music thats it. Still listen to the old shit a lot cuz i am a true AFI fan and i like every piece of work theyve done.
hey... people... they are no longer 16 year olds who play in a garage... it's normal that they change their music style... they changed their life style... they listen to a lot of different kinds of music...
I think it's great that they are able to experiment with every genre of music....
I really like all of their work... since Dork EP to Decemberunderground.. they have always been truthfull and they care about their fans...
Danny- Don't give me this shit. First off they used to pretend that they were from Berkeley when they are from Ukiah, Ca (almost by Oregon) which is nowhere near the eastbay and then ripped off the mallpunk scene in the 90's, got signed, played with rancid, redemption 87, offspring etc. Lets not pretend that the Howard Stern dressed in gothic look was for any other reason but money. Was there some kind of gotham city neighborhood that I don't know about in Ukiah that infuenced this?

(in response to thephillers)OK FACT CHECK<> UKIAH IS NO WHERE NEAT OREGON< ITS 50 MINUTES NORTH OF MY HOUSE AND MY HOUSE IS AND HOUR FROM THE EAST BAY so yeah. also they didnt start out as a hardcore band, it was just good ol punk rock. and since no one else ever really sounded like them its hard to believe they ripped anyone off. also you dont stay on a n indie label for 11 years if all you want to do is make money. so i think you are pretty much wrong.
"As long as you make the record you want, sales don't matter. We have our music and our fans. Everything else is subject to the whims of the marketplace." - Jade of AFI
As for the accusations of "selling out", that word is completely lost meaning these days. Selling out is going agianst what you stand for to make money. AFI makes music that they like. They are definatly not in it for the money. If they were, they wouldn't have started as a harcore band. Do you honestly they planned all of this out 15 years ago, predicting current fads that they could one day fit into? Shut up and have some balls kids.
Corporate is a word used by piss-ant weener kids who would rather rag on a band then actually listen to them. They attack them by calling them that making it seem as if the band only does what they do for money. Which we all know in AFI's case is NOT true. By ragging on them, the kids feel cool and against anything popular. AFI changes styles to stay fresh. If you want a band that makes the same music over and over again, listen to Nickel Back. Otherwise, fuck off.
And more importantly I have always despised these Corperate trash fucking posers. In the mid 90's they were ripping off the east bay punk scene and tried to sound like op ivy, rancid, green day etc. Then the corperate emo scene took off and, well, you all know the rest.
Ahemm, Green Day has never and will never be a punk band. Also AFI originated in 1991 when they were still in High School, if they've ripped off anyone it was The Misfits an even then they have little in common.
I was at the taping of this. They played at the Berkeley Sqaure on a saturday night and told everybody that there would be a taping for a video tommorow morning back here at 11am and that there would be free pizza from Blondies (Fat slice is better)
tthey really suck these days though
