This is the first track on her 1995 album Tigerlilly. I instantly fell in love with this song; the music, her delivery, the lyrics, just beautiful. simply beautiful. I could listen to that entire album because every song is beautifully crafted and Natalie is a great songwriter. this is good, honest music. Her stuff never got a lot of mainstream radio play but she was always a hit with the critics because she is simply brilliant, and anyone who kows good music can see that. Brava Natalie.
I love natalie. I was a teen in the early 90s and first saw her on MTV doing "because the night" from mtv unplugged 10000 maniacs. I totally fell in love with her voice and loved the performance. I actually didn't know that it was a cover until she started getting a lot of crap from people for their version. I listened to the original by Patti Smith which is great, but I still like Natalie's version. Then a few years later she came out with Tigerlilly and that was it for me.
anyone know what this song is really about? my theory is that it's about people going after their dreams and not having it realised. I envision young actors going to LA to seek fame and fortune but soon find out it's not as easy as they think. they either become famous but only for a short time or they don't acheive any success at all. I think it's juist saying that going after your dreams may not be as easy as you think. I would love to hear other people's take on it.
@vidlvr99 Having spent 3 years + in El Lay in law school (living with an show-biz/producer roomie) you are right on... a bittersweat tale of the siren song of the City of Angels... far too frail to not come tumbling down on everyone sooner or later...
I fell in love with this song in 2010.
