I like japanese g1 but I like the amercian version more. Because even though the japanese version is longer they got all of their ideas from the american toyline. Like the powermasters became the godmasters and the small headmasters became the headmaster jr.'s. Plus the american toys they copied their ideas from appeared in some form of american g1 fiction like season five's live-action segments and the universe comics.

I'm watching this with my family and while it's different it's fantastic! There's a bit less of a limit action-wise, and the animation is a tad better.

So? What made Transformers unique, at least to me, was the whole Autobots vs. Decepticon storyline and their never-ending war on Cybertron and Earth. It was a new concept, and if it had been just another Mecha show about people riding giant robots it probably wouldn't have the same impact. Besides what rose Transformers to popularity in the US and Japan was the 80's G1 cartoon, which was based on a storyline made by Marvel Comics (which every other Transformer story in existence is based on).

Actually, if you think about it, Optimus and Megatron were almost equals in terms of fighting prowess and power, although Optimus was a bit more powerful since Megatron needed all of the power chips from the other Decepticons just to pwn Prime. Galvatron is Megatron imbued with the power of Unicron, and therefore way more powerful than his pervious form (he disintergrated Starscream like he was nothing). Therefore, he was more capable of absorbing that blast than Prime was, in theory.

They did a reverse in the movie where they killed off Megatron instead even though he got revived in ROTF, but it does seem like Optimus is jumping back and forth between life and death too often i've counted at least 3 to 4 deaths including the original movie.

@hippogriffgirl there was an english dub. but it was poorly made. they didn't get any of the voices right and sometimes they got the names wrong. like for example, for some reason they gave some transformers human names. blaster was billy, blurr was wally and spoke at a normal pace, metroplex was phillip and fort max while in ship mode was space bridge bruce. prime sounded nothing like peter cullen. the unicron trilogy dubs, as bad as they were, were much better than this one

The original toyline (Microman and Diaclone), Headmasters/Super God-Masterforce/Victory/Zone/etc continuations of the original series, Beast Wars II/Neo, Kiss Players, Car Robots, Armada/Energon/Cybertron are for the most parts the Japanese contributions.

Funny thing is, notice how Transformers goes rubbish when any generation kills Optimus? G1 after the 1986 movie (cool) Optimus dies TF goes bad. Optimus revived later TF gets better. Optimus dies again the show crumbles. Oh and when Optimus 'dies' in the rotton Revenge of the Fallen, the movie goes pants. Moral of the story is Rodimus is utter pants.

They wanted to clear the way for the new characters (Read: the 1986 line of toys) and to do that, they either killed off or wrote out the bulk of the characters established over the past two years (Read: the 1984 and 1985 line of toys.) They weren't really aware of the fact that Optimus Prime was a role model, though, which is why they were caught off guard to the reaction to his death, more or less meaning they had to bring him back.

@ForgetaboutFreeman: You have to look at it from their point of view, really. Mid 80's cartoons didn't go about featuring violence and death on the scale that the movie did. It was mostly a means of clearing out the 84-85 products while making room for the 86 line. The problem was that Hasbro completely underestimated the backlash, which even went so far as to affect the GI Joe movie (Duke was supposed to have gotten killed by Serpentor; a postdub later changed that to a coma.)

@nobodysperfect06 They only killed him off because they never intended to bring him back to start with. Prime only came back in the first place because Hasbro underestimated the backlash that came from killing off Prime in the movie, and were more or less forced to bring him back because of it.
