Don't worry about these instructions guys. Just download Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode), it's simple software that get things done. Although it depends highly on your sound equipment.

POSSIBLE fix for WIN 7: Right click volume icon, choose "recording devices" If you see "Stereo Mix": Right click any other recoding devices and select "disable". If you don't see "stereo mix", right click somewhere in the white area of the recording box, and select " show disabled devices." Then you MIGHT see "stereo mix." If so, right click any other recoding devices and select "disable". Search for "recorder" to find the sound recorder, turn up the volume for the music source, and hit record.

To fellow 7/Vista users, free programs I've found to work around the sound card problem if you're stuck with something like Conexant that doesn't have stereo mix or let you record from speakers:

SoundTap: It works, but you don't have any settings to play with.

Procaster: It lets you alter the sensitivities of speakers/microphone, but you have to do a whole bunch of other crap just to work it.

@poopikins use the windows 7 search (click the windows icon at the bottom left, and then start typing "recorder" in the white search box at the bottom. Sound recorder should show up. Press enter to start it).

The sound recorder is also located under all programs ---> accessories. Searching for it is a quicker way of accessing it.
