Yes that' Al Howe doing his best DLR inpersonation! Still cool to see Greg in formative years! I met Greg at a guitar clinic at the Alanta Muscians Institute around this time he was playing tunes off his first solo record and tearin' it up!
I think Greg realized or he knew all along, his playing is too good to muddle up with singing. Too humble, too polite, too kind & too generous w/ his time & talent. Also
way under-rated & under paid so he had to play for over-rated over paid artists to
This music sounds more intense than some of the stuff he plays now. I am not a miusician, so I don't understand the technical difficulties associated with each style, but this sounds more high-energy and complicated than what he plays nowadays.
The only part of Greg's solo that sounds like Van Halen is the end at 4:48.....Eddie was Greg's biggest rock influence no doubt, but Greg took tapping to another level and the rest of his phrasing throughout the song is not even like Eddie.
This was a Van Halan type thing that was almost too good. Too much guitar which I love and those solos. For me one of the best hard rock albums ever... The songs and melodies were not Van Halen quality, lest face it, but I dig this album so much.
I loved this stuff back in the day. Even though a lot of guitarist/people would say this is wanking, the melody was still there. I owned this CD in the 90's, I need to get it again.
You are correct sir. That is indeed Greg's brother Al. My sister used to date Howe II's road manager. Met them a few times. Nice bunch of guys actually. Al was a little over the top, but he was pretty cool in general. At the time Kevin Soffera was the drummer, not Atma.
@misterreality Dude, what kind of things did he teach you? Did you work on sweeps, scales, improvisation, or was he more about learning all the chord inversions?
@TheFigueroa007 It was so ridiculously long ago, It was more about different soloing techniques then anything else,as that was what I was focused on at that time. He is a super nice guy, and recently reconnected with him and his management in a business partnership. I was a lucky kid, I took private lessons with Greg, Stephen Ross (For a LONG time) and John Petrucci.I still play, if you are interested check out my youtube page.
yeah...a lot of people think he's the reason that the band didn't go farther...I think Al sounds too abrasive.....but when you listen to Greg solo on this clip, you know you are listening to a star...the real problem was their songwriting...great riffs by Greg but overall usually fell flat--thank God he went solo
In 88, a lot of guitarists who played shred guitar knew about Greg Howe and wanted to change their style because of this dude....today, he is the perfect blend of classical, jazz, blues, rock, metal, and a little country to make him one of the most reknowned electric guitar players in the world.
All you spectators I would love to see you guys that is criticizing play guitar solo on cam to see if you are nearly as good as greg back then I could respect your comment better if I could see if you are better than this right now even though greg does not play like this anymore but let see can you guys plays this good
friggen amazing.... I've got their first CD and am trying to get a hold of their second CD.... I just wish they'd been around longer as a band - but here's to greg howe's shreddin in the 80s and his still-god-fucking-awesome playing today...
I've HoweII a few times,I took lessons from Greg going back 13 years ago.I've jammed with Al too..I'm so glad to see this..Thanks..Glad Greg is so moving forward-PEACE
I haven't heard anything about Al in about fifteen years. He was in some trouble and then dropped off the radar.
Greg is still traveling all around the world playing with some of the best musicians on the planet.
Don't get me wrong, Albert was a nice guy and a decent singer for the local circuit here in the Lehigh Valley, but didn't have the chops to do a national tour with Greg, Howe II or any other band.
@oboerne I have'nt seen Al in about 13-14 years..And when I was with Greg a few years back when he still lived on the east coast he was'nt even hearing from AL,which he said does'nt mean good things..Al was Kool...
Definately underrated! Doesn't matter how great you are if people don't like your songs you're fucked! You'll have to wear a mask or put a bucket on your head, then maybe people will listen to you.[ha]

I ssen these guys at a small club in chicago back in the day and they rocked the house.
The bass player followed greg threw every lick on every song.
The band blew a fuse in the club,no power at all,but when they tripped the breakers, the band started right where they left off!!
lewdew67 3 years ago
Yes lewdew67, that was Vern Parsons. He's a very talented bass player. Funny as hell offstage too.

I've known Greg and Albert since they were 16 and 15 respectively. Greg isn't an underrated guitarist at all.
He is known by guitarists and people who understand and appreciate guitar playing all over the world. He's
among the very best.
His brother Albert had the Davis Lee Roth thing when it could work, but was so blitzed every night
that he made the whole band look and sound horrible.
