  • When you are coming up - and your hips are moving "out, up, in" it is NOT a Maya it is a vertical figure 8, maya's are up down and out. Check with your local instructor.

    You are clear in your speech which is good. And for your attire in this video I recommend either a longer pair of shorts or a pair of tights. Appearance does matter in any instructional type of format. Check out other DVD's for attire of the dancers who have been doing this a while and learn from them. :)

  • hi cassie, i have a question.. is it right if my thighs/legs hurt a lot while im doing the maya? my hips dont hurt so much as my thighs so i think im doing it wrong , thank you good job, excuse my english, im latin :)

  • I don't know if Cassie has replied, however - do your legs still hurt a lot,? Often this can be caused by tight muscles in the thighs, you may need to do a decent warm up and stretch for the legs - also if your not used to standing with your knees bent it can be quite common for a beginner in belly dance to get tired thighs even when used to other dance forms.

  • Fine by me. If we ever get the chance to meet her and do our thing at the same time (You - belly button, Me - legs), we can have a contest to see who can last longer. I can assure you that you'll be fast asleep LONG before I am finished. In fact, I'll still be licking her legs after you wake up eight hours later.

  • LOL! Don't be so sure though. I could spend a long long time gently licking her belly button and the area immediately around it. By the time I'd be finished, that cute hole in her tummy would be red. Navel licking is a slow process! :-)

  • It may be a slow process, but look at how small the target area is. One quick lick and you're done, when you think about it. With a woman's legs, there is so much skin to lick, just to get one good coat of saliva on both of them could take hours, or if you do it the way I would do it, it would take days, possibly a week.

  • It certainly wouldn't be a 'quick lick'. Slow and gentle, that's me. True, you would have a larger area to cover and that could last a week, but a navel licked can then be licked again and again and again. I'd never grow tired or bored as I explore the bumps and crevices inside that tummy hole. The more bumps and crevices that there are, the longer it would take for my tongue to gently explore them. It could take more that a week!

Maybe sometime I'll wear an outfit like what you're wearing and bellydance. LOL I'm just kidding. I'm a guy who likes to joke around. You keep up the good work. I give you 2 thumbs up.

  • Your instruction is very good and people should concentrate on the instruction not looking for things that would make other viewers take you less seriously because you may or may not be wearing leggings, are you people for real. I am sure back in the day when bellydancing began there may have not been any panties, leggings, or much of anything else, and I still believe attention was on the dance, stop hating when someone is good at what she does.

    when you do the regular maya on with your feet still on the floor, do you ever raise your heels up to bring your hip up or are you only supposed to use your knees?

  • I just use my knees if I'm not moving my body up and down with it.

  • I'm taking private lessons with Aida Al Adawi of San Francisco, she studied with Jamilla Salimpour. Is this under her maya format?

  • I was taught to barely lift heal, ever so slightly if any, but everyone is taught differently.

  • I have taken plenty of bellydance lessons and none of those people have only worn a hip scarf over panties. It is possible to wear pants and still show the move correctly. Shorts, leggings, yoga pants, etc., could all show the move correctly while not making yourself look like an utter fool.

    You are embarrassing yourself and the legitimate practitioners of this dance.

In her own time, with her own money, not charging anybody a nickel. Just for fun- remember that that notion? Fun? The only person who should be embarrassed here is yourself.   • You need to have pants or shorts on under that hipscarf. It is possible and expected that instructors wear leggings or other suitable attire. It is disrepectful to wear only a hip scarf. You can still see the movement in tight leggings. Also, beginners (your target audience) should not attempt to level change with a maya as it can cause injury due to lack of leg strength in the muscles needed to control the movement.Continue TAKING your classes, you have a lot of potential.

  • Someone needs to get a life! Or get so busy making their own helpful videos that they don't have time to make un-helpful comments about anothers valid attempts. I did not find the attire was in any way disrespectful to the craft. And why don't we stop trying to be sheriffs of other people lives? We're all responsible for monitoring our own level of ability and fitness. A sprain is a great reminder to stretch and warm up and not over-do.

  • that's weird, I never learned mayas that way. I just do it the way you did it without the feet, in your first video, and I feel the work mainly on my hips, not on the legs.

    also to add "drama" I know I can lift the foot of the same side as the hip that's being lifted, but I usually just do it with both my feet flat on the ground.

    anyways great tutorial, and pretty legs :)

  • I learned to maya without the use of my feet or legs. You should try doing a maya while on your knees. It's amazing how much a difference you feel in the muscle group, and how much more control you learn with it.
