This was the "Top Gun" of The 70's. I own the DVD, but I wish it had not only subtitles, but was also a special edition with 5.1 Surround Sound. Mr. Redford, get on the ball, will you?
I saw this film as a second feature to another movie I went to go see. I was so impressed I went back to see Waldo Pepper again. It is perhaps the most underrated film of all time. A practically perfect piece of film making. If you get an opportunity to see it or own it on DVD, dont hesitate a moment!
It's amazing how many people have never heard of this flick, especially since it stars one of the biggest movie stars ever. I always thought it was underrated. I haven't seen it in years, and I may have to go buy a copy just so I know it's there for when I have a craving for the Great Waldo Pepper.
@mikecharliemike : I look at this stuff, then I see how we are now--talking about our illnesses, waiting for our government checks, our women contemptuous of us, working at boring jobs for 30 years at a stretch, sensitive to heat and cold, afraid of cigarettes and guns...something has to change. And it will.
THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER will FINALLY debut on WIDESCREEN Universal DVD on August 3rd, 2010! It's available right now for pre-order on Amazon.com! THANK YOU UNIVERSAL!!!
The plane that crashes at1:05 is a De Havilland Tiger Moth disguised to look like a Curtiss JN4 Jenny. The JN4:s were too rare to be destroyed for the movie.
Yes, and the Tiger Moth that lands in the water early in the movie is probably destroyed too. I don't know if it can be the same plane they repaired and crashed again, but I doubt that. The plane that crashes in the water had modified, longer upper wings to look more like a Jenny, which the later plane hadn't.
Rumor has it that Tallmantz Aviation kept the wreckage, and after they folded it was sold off to restorers. I don't know if that's true or not, but I kind of hope so.
This is and always has been one of my all-time favorite movies. Maybe you need to know something of aviation history or love flying and vintage airplanes to appreciate this?
Check my Red Baron song on the "BicyclingGuitarist" channel here on YouTube. The lyrics and images are historically accurate, and the song rocks. I wrote it on a bicycle.
I just ran across it while looking for some other things on WWI. I saw the movie when I was in high school. We went as a class outing. I watched it for a bit of a nostalgic laugh.
One of Nergvols favorite films, think Skordy enjoyed too. An era that is lost to us with WW1 vets gone but shall not be forgotton. To have barnstormers land in farm hayfield, what an event. Who has farm or field now? Red Baron just pizza now, pilots engaging in areal combat actually seeing their fellow combatant are days long gone. Roy Hill an under rated director Sky Pilot
I saw this movie when it first came out on the big screen, I now have 2 copies of it and burn them to DVD's just to make sure i don't wear out the tapes. I'm sure I'll always have it, Best Movie ever. LOL, as you can tell by name I guess I like it.
@1mediaguy Two disturbing scenes, actually, both harrowing. Barnstorming wasn't all fun by any means, and this film makes that perfectly clear. It's easily one of the top10 aviation movies!
Thanks for posting! A great all-around film from 1975 that many have forgotten. This is one of those rare cases where it IS better to see this movie on the biggest possible screen.
Love this film... and I would give my right arm for someone to upload the ending credits for the piano music that plays at the end!! It is so beautiful...

It's a great movie, but I nearly cried when they smashed up that Tiger Moth.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
gads I thought this movie stunk it up back in the 70's and I still think that. Although I think my cat Molotov likes it. he also likes donuts.

This movie features one of the most disturbing and in the same instance one of the most moving scenes ever in cinematic history.

Does the 1930s logo also appeared at the beginning of the film or the zooming globe logo?
