My stepdad's father Thomas Ringwood was a fire fighter chief for the Poughkeepsie Fire Department and I remember him saying it was a big fire. Great video!
I made it there this weekend and loved it. It's beautiful. People looked so happy walking with their families, dogs or riding bikes. Glad this is available for all folks, but especially for Poughkeepsie residents... great progress.
This bridge seemed destined to rot with neglect. Now seeing it as a renovated Walkway Over the Hudson it is so awe inspiring. It's amazing what can be done with positive people at the helm and public support. Can't wait to walk it.
I grew up just south of Poughkeepsie. I remember the fire in 1974 but did not really know the history of the bridge. Thanks for posting it - I really enjoyed learning it's history. I cannot wait to return to New York to take a walk across it.
The project and video were wonderful. But think about it. The next time your stuck in traffic. Instead of 3,500 railroad cars it's now 10,000 or more trucks. Plus all the passengers have cars or SUV's. This is good for the air and the country? I guess they saved the bridge and that's great. But they should have saved the New York, New Haven and Hartford.
they should have made penn central fix the bridge and solicit traffic through the maybrook gateway. if the bridge burned 10 years later the NYS&W would probably be running into new england right now
Of course you're right. But remember the transportation policy people running our goverment are road and highway builders and their whole industry and friends. They wanted and were working hard to derail America. NYS&W today is a small local short line. Example, they didn't let them keep the D&H. If we had a government that treated all forms of transportation equally. The New Haven would still be in business.
Today these people which are mostly oil people are overseas investors. Not even Americans anymore. Our money is leaveing the country enriching and enpowering these people which are not looking out for our benefit or just hate us.
Glad to be a part of this history :) But seriously not ever going on the walkway again until the buzz dies down - there were just TOOOOO many people up there!
It's sad that it zooms from '74 to '07....without mention of the "incubator" stage and Bill Sepe. Just thought I'd mention it myself. Congrats to Fred Shaefer and company for the realization of this marvelous project. Hooray!!!!!!!!!
I hope this project isn't another failed attempt to bring prosperity to downtown POK. I remembered when they close off Main St and turned it into a mall. The drug dealers took this are over and continue to force many businesses to move elsewhere. Good luck!
I can remember, as a child in 1974, riding in the car on rt 9 and looking up as we passed under the bridge and seeing the twisted, damaged tracks. Then one day, they were gone. I didn't learn why until much later. Gonna walk the bridge tomorrow for the first time, and marvel at the fact that I'm standing on 125 years of history.
What a piece of history! I'm so glad people understood the value of keeping it up. Too much of our history is torn down in the name of progress. Thanks to everyone involved in making this film!
Thank you for putting this together. Have you shown it at the local film festivals? I have since moved to MD from Kingston and didn't even know of the walkway. I am looking forward to bringing the kids for a walk.
I lived in Poughkeepsie for many years, was traveling on Rt 9, as part of my job, went under the the bridge as it burned that May day in '74. I am so glad the walkway dream came true!
Took another walk on it yesterday with the family.. Likely the last warm day we're going to see this year. Oh My God, why would any leafers go to Vermont when you can see this much right here? Been a Poughkeepsie resident all my life, and this is easily the best thing that could have happened to the area!!!
Is anyone aware that in 1984, Gordon Miller, a long-time Deaf resident of Poughkeepsie, wrote a letter to the NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation to recommend that the Railroad Bridge be converted into a "glass skywalk" over the Hudson River. I thought that was an interesting bit of Poughkeepsie history.
This is fantastic. Thank you so much for putting this Historical video together. I grew up in Hyde Park and now I can share this with my kids. I can't wait to come back to visit and experience this journey with my children. My Grandfather and Great Grandfather use to talk about riding the train over the Hudson.
This is an incredible video... very well done... the Walkway is just above me here on Albany St and i must say this Video made me appreciate it much more than ever before... VERY WELL DONE INDEED!!!!
I grew up in Poughkeepsie in Rip Van Winkle by the train station and can remember always wondering about the day I could walk that old railroad bridge.
well, I came back east for a family visit and took a trip back up the Hudson last weekend.
20 years later and the dream of walking that bridge came true!
In 1966 i rode my motorcycle to the middle of the bridge. Took a few pictures, a locomotive came towards me at five mph as i stood to the side. I still have the pictures. My grandfather saw the opening of the bridge and i saw it burn at the end as a City of Pok. policeman. Compliments to the people who did this youtube video!
Wow, do you by any chance have digital copies of your pictures that you could send to me? I'd like very much to foward them to the Walkway chairman (Fred Schaeffer).
That was a great video. I remember the fire on the bridge, I worked at Vassar Hospital and could see it easily from there. What a history is about us in the Hudson Valley, so much to be appreciated and it's so beautiful!
Thanks. Again, I'm not that talented...but anyway. Now that the bridge is open, have you had a chance to go up onto it, assuming that you're still in the area?
its not only the 400th anniversery of henry hudson and 200th anniversery of fultons steamship, it is also the 120th aniversery of when bridge first opened to trains in 1889
Man if it wasnt for the fire i bet they would still be using this bridge for trains ugg

Wonderful Project, Wonderful Documentary.
You brought the bridge back to life.
It is a pleasure to stroll and enjoy the views -- 212 feet above the majestic Hudson River.
I've been telling all my friends.
We plan to come back often. Many thanks.

Congratulation to Fred Scaeffer and Bob
Detmer for great video. My dad was a friend of Fred's father. I grew up in the
same area as Bob. I lived under the
railroad tracks, and have great memories
of the soldiers throwing coins out of
the trains. I just loved the sounds of the
trains at night. My father would be very
proud of your achievemens. I live in Florida, but will visit someday soon to
walk over the bridge, and see the house
I grew up in. I am told, it is still there.
