I've seen the movie several dozen times, it's a classic for EMS. Almost done reading the book, and I'm quite surprised to see how similar it is to the written word. Several of the lines in the movie came from the book as well, and some of those lines made the movie. Thanks to Joe Connelly for enduring himself to those experiences, writing this book that turned into the movie that it did. He's said a lot of the things that we have thought of saying, or if not, we understand why they are said.
I still have this wonderful movie on VHS. On the back of the case, their is an image of Cage holding a stethoscope up to the wall, I wonder what he was listening to? I also wonder why that never made it to the final cut..
Totally agree with other B.O.D fans here - Misunderstood and underrated, definetley up there with After Hours, King of Comedy, Goodfellas, The Departed for me, as Scorsese's best work.
unlike other EMS movies or shows (which there is not many compared to fire and police movies) this is pretty accurate to what working EMS is really about...you have to remember that along with the stabbings, shootings, overdoses and other "exciting calls", there are also alot of bullshit calls that we have to respond to for people who are on medicaid, dont have a job or car, and dont have a primary care physician, and basically want us to give them a ride to the hospital
Do yo uthink people call the paramedics unless they have to? I am one of those people you mentioned and if I wouldnt have *hitched a ride* with the paramedics I could have died.
@socalfrijolito This isn't a movie about being an EMT. It's a movie about 2 people who discover that sometimes through the worst you can find the best in people(maybe?). One of the 2 people happens to be an EMT. But if you lived in the City in the 90's, this movie is pretty damn accurate on how it could get during some of those really hot nights. But of course Gulianni cleaned all that up for us! LOL!!
OH!!!! Imist thats nigth of Job in EMS, The trouble is that in Mexico it is appreciated that work and badly paid, but I miss those nights, that adrenaline, and why not say so, that edge of madness, but ultimately help save lives, this film is one of my favorites and the music is great
It does have a cult following! The entire crew of the Riverton Ambulance Service! I have hit the point where my partner and I can recite the movie word for word... its something to do on long transfers
@what342 among those of us who have survived EMS....it does have a cult following. My paramedic school instructor made us watch it the first day and when it was over he asked if we still wanted to be medics.
This is a film about the works of mercy. If you weren't brought up a catholic, you might not know them: there are seven corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, harbour the harbourless, visit the sick, free the prisoners and bury the dead, and seven spritual works of mercy: instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish sinners, bear wrongs patiently, forgive offences willingly, comfort the afflicted and pray for the living and the dead.
This film is not secular, nor was its promotional art - for instance, see the poster where Nicholas Cage is looking through A CROSS, because (a) he plays a paramedic, but also (b) because of the Catholic themes that quietly run under the surface of the story.
If you're still not convinced of it, remind yourself of the final image of the film - Nicholas Cage lying in the arms of a character called MARY. It is deliberately shot that way to evoke the Pietà.
Nicholas Cage's character may also be named Frank after St Francis of Assisi - my theory anyway. Martin Scorsese likes Assisi a lot. And how can you expect this film to be truly secular when the director is so Catholic?
We also find out that Frank was once called Father Frank, because he saved so many lives. He later carries out a MERCY killing of Mary's father.
One last thing - the use of the song 'Red Wine' - Catholic, blood of Christ.
FYI, I am neither evangelical nor a moron. Just fact.
No, Cage's character is named Frank, because the movie is based on the book of the same name, written by NYC paramedic Joe Connelly. I am a retired NYC paramedic. I haven't seen the movie, and not sure I ever will. I spent 22 years in EMS, worked Bed-Stuy for 10 years, 87-97. There are still ghosts and demons from my time that lurk.
Stop looking for things that aren't there. The answers are more simple than you may think.
Fantastic/Brilliant movie. Nicolas Cage does his best performance to date, and his paramedic buddies and the people he encounters are all very well portrayed. John Goodman is a fat, sweaty but likable paramedic, Tom Sizemore is a psychotic ambulance driver who has his very own view of the job, Ving Rhames is a delivered Christian who takes the job as an opportunity to save souls, Mark Anthony is an interesting street weirdo, and Patricia Arquette is a weary woman who loses her father
i work the overnights in manhattan and this is how some of my nights used to go at times.....i love this movie.everyone should see this and maybe EMS will catch a break
The guy who wrote the book taught me to be a medic. LOL. Joe's a genious, learning under him was an unforgettable expeiriance. Scrosesi's a great directer too; Taxi Driver and Full mettel are some of my favorite movies, but the book is beyond belief. I recoment anyone to pick up a copy. Joe put's these little stories between chapters that leave you laughing and crying. I remember pulling into St. Vincent's hospital one day with Joe and his partner. We had a dif breather. It was straight foward.
We treated her for asthma, she had a heart history. After the call Joe asked me why I didn't think the call was cardiac related. I explained to him my thinking, he nodded in agreament and said I'd make a good medic. There was silence. . . a woman started screaming. "Get that out of me, Call my husband! What is wrong with you people?!" Joe looked at me and asked "and that would be the sound of?" I replied "A foli Joe?"
you have to love the 90's!!!!

You are an evangelical moron. The works of God do not factor into the inner workings of science. The film is secular, praying does not save lives.
