@elliexanime I didn't either until I heard him as Muska. I was absolutely blown away by his performance. Everyone in the dub was generally good (even if the leads sounded like teens), but Hamill really surprised me with his performance—he really knocked it out of the park. Nonetheless, he is a GREAT voice actor; a panel I went to recently made me respect him even more—who knew he had a lot of voices?

@elliexanime Yeah, he's so great at doing villains. The only other film he did was NAUSICAA, but his role was minor there. I think LAPUTA is a far more meatier role for the actor, and arguably the role of his career. Luke was iconic, yes, but playing badguy roles just seems to be his specialty.

The guy that did pazu's voice was 22 (possibly 21) when the dubbing was recorded, they clearly didnt even try to get a 'young teen' to do the job. If they got the best guy for the job then fair dues to them but i will always think they got it wrong, if they were going for an older male voice actor, why not get an older voice actor for sheeta too? then it wouldent sound like a man talking to a 14 year old for most of the film

Pazu's Disney VA may not be perfect but I'm willing to accept him since the dub has a villain voiced by Mark Hamill, and an arguably stronger supporting cast than its Japanese counterpart. I have to disagree with the last two comments, i respect yer opinions and most of what yer saying is right, its just to me They got Pazu wrong. He's a few years too mature for the role. To me, the extra music takes away some of its original beauty, almost haunting scenes become normall scenes with the extra sound..... Its really only those things that I have a problem with, most of everything else is done well in my opinion.

It's difficult to find a voice actor in that awkward age of a young teen. Males voices drastically change at that point in their lives, and thus it'd be hard to find someone to fit that role that sounds just the right age to everyone. Most of the time, a female is used. I'd much rather have an older male do the voice than a female. Except for young boys, I really don't like hearing a woman do a man's role, unless that high-pitched voice is something plot relevance to the character.

@Flufferz626 Yes , and it should also be noted that there is no clarification in the movie on how old Pazu is supposed to be. In many ways he looks young but in others he also looks mature too. On the flipside, his age is not a key point to the plot, unlike, say, NADIA, where the protagonists (roughly around 14) DO age by about a year toward the end which counts as a plot point. In this film there is no such plot device. So technically one COULD get away with Pazu and Sheeta being a bit older.

Finally, I disagree that disney "got Laputa wrong", because the opposite to me, is true. Yes, they DO make the leads sound more teenagish and maybe some of the added-in dialogue wasn't necessary, but on the whole I thought it captured the excitement, humor, mystery, and heart of the characters, overall story, and spirit of the original. Then again I always watch the Ghibli films with the Disney dubs and see nothing wrong with doing so.

@Turnajon Pazu was the only one that they got wrong imo, but hes got such a big role in the movie that it takes away from it. The extra music/monolauge takes away from some of the effect of the animation at times. It still works in engllish, and is still a good movie, but it could have been done better. At least it wasnt destroyed like Nausicaa originally was, and again, i think overall disney do a good job of the dubbing

@40dorty Whatever. I didn't have that much of a problem with James' Pazu; then again I was never really that enamored of the original Japanese VA either. He sounded fine to me, and otherwise I thought the rest of the cast was perfect, especially Muska and Dola—those two were the real stars. As far as the extra dialogue, there were SOME lines that I COULD have done without, but otherwise I liked it. I personally thought the new score enhanced the film for me. So for me, it's an excellent dub.
